The bearing capacities of concrete-filled steel tubes are normally derived through experiments with small-scale specimens, but it is uncertain whether such derivations are appropriate for the much larger components used in practical engineering. This study therefore investigates the effect of different diameters (219, 426, 630, and 820 mm) on the axial compression of short concrete columns in steel (Q235) tubes. It is found that the peak nominal stress decreases with increasing specimen size and that the axial bearing capacity is determined by three separate components: the cylinder compressive strength of the concrete, the improvement in strength due to the confining effect of the steel tube, and the longitudinal strength of the steel tube. At peak load, increases in the specimen diameter reduce the hoop stresses in the steel tube, thereby reducing the strengthening effect of confinement. Vertical stress in the steel tube is increased with diameter; therefore, the axial bearing capacity of the steel tube is directly related to the specimen size. Size effect coefficients for these three aspects of bearing capacity are defined and used to develop a size-dependent model for predicting the axial bearing capacity of large, concrete-filled steel tubes. The model is then validated against experimental data.

Reactive powder concrete-filled steel tubes (RPCFSTs) have become an important research target in recent years. In engineering applications, RPCFSTs can provide superior vertical components for high-rise and tower buildings, thereby enabling developers to provide more floor space. However, this type of composite structure is prone to inelastic outward local buckling. The use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) wrapping to suppress such local buckling has shown great potential in limited test results. This paper presents experimental results concerning the axial compression of CFRP-confined reactive powder concrete-filled circular steel tubes (CF-RPCFSTs). We included 18 specimens in our experimental investigation, varying the number of CFRP layers, steel tube thickness, and RPC strength. According to our test results, CF-RPCFSTs exhibit compression shear failure and drum-shaped failure. The CFRP wrap can effectively enhance bearing capacity and postpone local buckling of the steel tube. In addition, three-layer CFRP-confined RPC-filled thin-wall steel tubes are suitable for engineering. We also propose a model to calculate the bearing capacity of CF-RPCFSTs. Compared to the existing model of CFRP-confined concrete-filled steel tubes, the results obtained using the proposed model are in good agreement with our experimental results.

The steel tube concrete columns with steel reinforcement cages, steel plates and steel tubes has been used in super high-rise buildings, which are called concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns with internal stiffeners. Based on the theory of limit equilibrium, the unified equation for the axial bearing capacity of the CFST columns with internal stiffeners is obtained. The derived equation in this study can provide reference for the future engineering applications.

As a key part in concrete-filled steel tubular frames, the seismic behavior of joints between concrete-filled steel tubes and beams needs more research because of the complexity of stress under the reciprocating load. the behavior of 9 strengthened joints connecting concrete-filled steel tube with H-shaped steel beam have been analyzed under reversed cyclic loading condition by using finite element analysis software ANSYS, and the result show that: (1) The ultimate bearing capacity, energy dissipation capacity and ductility of strengthened joint are obvious better than that of ordinary welded joint; (2) Compared to concrete-filled steel tube the ultimate bearing capacity, energy dissipation capacity and ductility of double-layer concrete-filled steel tubes are better; (3) For the joints connecting double-layer concrete-filled steel tubes with beams, the shape of inner tube have certain effect on the ultimate bearing capacity but little on the energy dissipation capacity and ductility. (4) The shape of stiffened plate has significant influence on the ultimate bearing capacity, energy dissipation capacity and ductility of nodes.

Concrete-filled steel tubes have been widely used all over the world due to their superior structural behaviour. To promote the use of ecofriendly materials and to reduce the use of concrete, this paper presents an innovative type of composite column, which can be referred as bamboo-concrete filled steel tubes. In this kind of column, concrete filled in the space between the external steel tube and the inner raw moso bamboo. Bamboo-concrete filled steel tubes inherit the merits of concrete-filled steel tubes such as high load-bearing capacity and ductility performance. Besides, global buckling behaviour of a bamboo column due to its relatively large slenderness can be significantly improved, and the bamboo column with nodes could provide confinement to the infilled concrete. This paper investigated the composite effect of bamboo-concrete filled steel tubular stub columns subjected to axial compression. In addition, concrete-filled double-skin steel tubular stub columns and hollow concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns were also tested for comparison. The main experimental parameter considered was the diameter-to-thickness ratio (D/t) of steel tube. Test results indicated that the composite columns with moso bamboo pipe as inner core elements showed better ductility than the hollow concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns. The bearing capacity and ductility visibly increased with decreasing of the D/t ratio.

This study experimentally investigated the behaviour of concrete-filled steel tubes under cyclic axial compression. A total of 42 concrete-filled steel tube specimens of two groups were tested to failure. In each group, 18 specimens were subjected to three cyclic axial loading histories while three specimens were subjected to monotonic loading for comparison. The results indicated that concrete-filled steel tube specimens under cyclic axial compression failed in the form of buckling and still kept their form which was similar to the failure of specimens under monotonic loading. Effect of cyclic axial loading slightly reduced (approximately 2%–3%) the maximum stress but it increased 25% of the strain corresponding to the maximum stress. Loading and unloading moduli in post-peak stress phase were, respectively, about 70% and 85% higher than initial moduli because better interaction and confinement were resulted from the initial loading cycle. In addition, the absorbed energy exhibited a heavy dependence on strain and confinement while it was insignificantly affected by cyclic loading histories. Details and application of obtained experimental results are reported in this article.

The post-fire axial compressive behavior of a set of steel fiber reinforced ceramsite concrete filled steel tubular short columns (noted as SFCC-SSC) was experimentally studied. Effect of the maximum value of fire response temperatures of the specimens and some parameters on the axial compression performance of the specimens was especially discussed. The results show that the surface of the steel tubes after fire presented dark red for 700°Cof furnace temperature and orange red for 900°C, and there was no obvious descending segment in post-fire load-displacement curves of the most specimens subjected to fire load. It was concluded that the axial bearing capacity of the specimens aftersuffering the furnace temperature of 900°C is much less than that of the specimens not subjected to fire load, and the volume of steel fiber of 0.5% of has the greatest effect on post-fire bearing capacity of specimens of SFCC-SSC.

This paper investigates the axial behavior of slender reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with concrete filled steel tube (CFST) jacketing technique. It is realized by pouring self-compacting concrete (SCC) into the gap between inner original slender RC columns and outer steel tubes. Nine specimens were prepared and tested to failure under axial compression: a control specimen without strengthening and eight specimens with heights ranging between 1240 and 2140 mm strengthened with CFST jacketing. Experimental variables included four different length-to-diameter (L/D) ratios, three different diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratios, and three different SCC strengths. The experimental results showed that the outer steel tube provided confinement to the SCC and original slender RC columns and thus effectively improved the behavior of slender RC columns. The failure mode of slender RC columns was changed from brittle failure (concrete peel-off) into ductile failure (global bending) after strengthening. And, the load-bearing capacity, material utilization, and ductility of slender RC columns were significantly enhanced. The strengthening effect of CFST jacketing decreased with the increase of L/D ratio and D/t ratio but showed little variation with higher SCC strength. An existing expression of load-bearing capacity for traditional CFST columns was extended to propose a formula for the load-bearing capacity of CFST jacketed columns, and the predictions showed good agreement with the experimental results.

In this paper, a modified strains development model (MSDM) for expansive concrete-filled steel tube (ECFST) was formulated and verified on the experimental data, obtained from testing specimens on the expansion stage. The modified strain development model for restraint strains and self-stresses values estimation in concrete with high expansion energy capacity under any type of the symmetrical and unsymmetrical finite stiffness restraint conditions was proposed. Based on proposed MSDM a new model for expansive concrete-filled steel tubes is developed. The main difference between this model and other previously developed models consists in taking into account in the basic equations an induced force in restrain that is considered as an external load applied to the concrete core of the member. For verification of the proposed model-specific experimental studies were performed. As follows from comparison results restrained expansion strains values calculated following the proposed model shows good compliance with experimental data. The values predicted by the proposed MSDM for concrete-filled steel and obtained experimental data demonstrated good agreement that confirms the validity of the former.
