In this paper, a method is developed for nonlinear analysis of laterally loaded long-flexible pile near undrained clay slope. The ideal elastic-plastic p-y curve model is used as the basic calculation model to study the pile-soil interaction system. To consider the slope effect on the soil resistance along with pile length, related reduction function expressions of soil resistance are selected by assessing the existing methods. A finite difference iteration scheme is proposed to solve the pile’s deflection curve equations to obtain nonlinear response of pile. The developed method is validated by comparing its results with the existing method, which shows a good agreement. A number of parameters analyses are carried out, and effects of different influence factors on laterally loaded pile are further discussed.

The hydrodynamic characteristics of the planing hulls in particular at the planing regime are completely different from the conventional hull forms and the determination of these characteristics is more complicated. In the present study, calm water hydrodynamic characteristics of planing hulls are investigated using a hybrid method. The hybrid method combines the dynamic trim and sinkage from the Zarnick approach with the Savitsky method in order to calculate the total resistance of the planing hull. Since the obtained dynamic trim and sinkage values by using the original Zarnick approach are not in good agreement with experimental data, an improvement is applied to the hybrid method using a reduction function proposed by Garme. The numerical results obtained by the hybrid and improved hybrid method are compared with each other and available experimental data. The results indicate that the improved hybrid method gives better results compared to the hybrid method, especially for the dynamic trim and resistance. Although the results have some discrepancies with experimental data in terms of resistance, trim and sinkage, the improved hybrid method becomes appealing particularly for the preliminary design stage of the planing hulls.

Sleeve valve pipe grouting, an effective method for reinforcing soil layers, is often employed to correct the deformation of subway tunnels. In order to study the effect of grouting on rectifying the displacement of existing tunnels, this paper proposes a mechanical model of the volume expansion of sleeve valve pipe grouting taking into consideration the volume expansion of the grouted soil mass. A formula for the additional stress on the soil layer caused by grouting was derived based on the principle of the mirror method. In addition, a formula for the horizontal displacement of a tunnel caused by grouting was developed through a calculation model of shearing dislocation and rigid body rotation. The results of the calculation method proposed herein were in good agreement with actual engineering data. In summary, enlarging the grouting volume within a reasonable range can effectively enhance the grouting corrective effect. Further, with an increase in the grouting distance, the influence of grouting gradually lessens. At a constant grouting length, setting the bottom of the grouting section at the same depth as the lower end of the tunnel can maximize the grouting corrective effect.

The optimal velocity model which depends not only on the headway but also on the relative velocity is analyzed in detail. We investigate the effect of considering the relative velocity based on the linear and nonlinear analysis of the model. The linear stability analysis shows that the improvement in the stability of the traffic flow is obtained by taking into account the relative velocity. From the nonlinear analysis, the relative velocity dependence of the propagating kink solution for traffic jam is obtained. The relation between the headway and the velocity and the fundamental diagram are examined by numerical simulation. We find that the results by the linear and nonlinear analysis of the model are in good agreement with the numerical results.

A new empirical correlation for upward flowing supercritical aviation kerosene RP-3 in the vertical tubes is proposed. In order to obtain the database, numerical simulation with a four-component surrogate model on RP-3 and LS low Reynolds turbulence model in vertical circular tube has been performed. Tubes of diameter 2mm to 10mm are studied and operating conditions cover pressure from 3MPa to 6MPa. Heat flux is 500KW/m2, mass flow rate is 700kg/(m2·s). The numerical results on wall temperature distribution under various conditions are compared with experimental data and a good agreement is achieved. The existing correlations are summarized and classified into three categories. Three representative correlations of each category are selected out to evaluate the applicability in heat transfer of supercritical RP-3. The result shows that correlations concluded from water and carbon-dioxide do not perform well in predicting heat transfer of hydrocarbon fuel. The mean absolute deviation of them is up to 20% and predict about 80% of the entire database within 30% error bands. So a new correlation which is applicable to different working conditions for supercritical RP-3 is put forward. Gnielinski type has been adapted as the basis of the new correlation for its higher accuracy. In consideration of major influence factors of supercritical heat transfer, correction terms of density and buoyancy effect are added in. The new correlation has a MAD of 9.26%, predicting 90.6% of the entire database within ±15% error bands. The comparisons validate the applicability of the new correlation.

This paper presents the results of three dimensional finite element analysis of laterally loaded pile groups of configuration 1×1, 2×1 and 3×1, embedded in two-layered soil consisting of soft clay at liquid limit overlying dense sand using Plaxis 3D. Effects of variation in pile length (L) and clay layer thickness (h) on lateral capacity and bending moment profile of pile foundations were evaluated by employing different values of pile length to diameter ratio (L/D) and ratio of clay layer thickness to pile length (h/L) in the analysis. Obtained results indicated that the lateral capacity reduces non-linearly with increase in clay layer thickness. Larger decrease was observed in group piles. A non-dimensional parameter Fx ratio was defined to compare lateral capacity in layered soil to that in dense sand, for which a generalized expression was derived in terms of h/L ratio and number of piles in a group. Group effect on lateral resistance and maximum bending moment was observed to become insignificant for clay layer thickness exceeding 40% of pile length. For a fixed value of clay layer thickness, lateral capacity and bending moment in a single pile increased significantly with increase in pile length only up to an optimum embedment depth in sand layer which was found to be equal to three times pile diameter and 0.21 times pile length for pile with L/D 15. An explicit formula is presented for the design of welded steel plates subjected to uniform lateral pressure, on the basis of a designer-specified level of acceptable permanent set, including that due to welding. The formula is derived from a combination of theoretical and experimental studies and shows good agreement with experimental results. For the convenience of designers the formula is also given in the form of design curves. The paper also delineates the areas of application of this and other formulas for laterally loaded plating. In brief, the paper shows that for static and quasistatic loads the formula derived herein is more accurate than formulas based on either the pseudo-elastic or the rigid-plastic approach. As the load becomes more dynamic the rigid-plastic approach becomes more appropriate, and for high-speed impact loads the rigid-plastic approach is best. For quasistatic loads, such as slamming, the formula presented herein is somewhat conservative while the rigid-plastic formulas are somewhat optimistic. A similar formula for concentrated loads (such as wheel loads) will be presented in a subsequent paper.

Reactor individual branch loss mutation is one of the important reasons leading to local temperature too high. In order to explore process deviation for dry type hollow shunt reactor loss amplification effect, this paper is establish a loss calculation model of dry-type air-core reactor as the tool, Comparative analysis relationship between the four common types of process deviation and the local branch loss. Calculation results show that the number of turns deviation are the main factor influencing the reactor partial loss, So the reactor production winding process should strengthen the control of the number of turns deviation.
