Background. Hypertension is a global problem, for which high-altitude residents exhibit higher burden. Hypertension in Tajik nomads from Pamirs with an average altitude above 4000 m remains less studied. We aimed to determine the prevalence, awareness, treatment, control, and risk factors associated with hypertension among Tajik population in Pamirs. Methods. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between August and September 2015 using stratified three-stage random sampling in Taxkorgan county, Pamirs, China. Hypertension is defined as mean systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) ≥140/90 mmHg and/or taking antihypertensive medication within the past two weeks. The prevalence (SBP ≥130 or DBP ≥80 mmHg) was also estimated using the 2017 American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) High Blood Pressure Guideline. The awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension and associated factors were evaluated. Results. Totally, 797 subjects aged ≥18 years were enrolled with 46.3% men and 88.8% nomads with the mean age of 42.3 ± 15.2 years. The prevalence of hypertension was 24.2% (140/90 mmHg), and the prevalence was as high as 40.3%, based on the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline. Overall awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension were 52.8%, 40.9%, and 9.3%, respectively. In multivariate logistic regression, BMI ≥24.0 kg/m2 (OR: 2.41, 95% CI: 1.44–4.04) was a risk factor for prehypertension, and age ≥60 years (OR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.15–3.61), BMI ≥24.0 kg/m2 (OR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.15–3.61), and abdominal obesity (OR: 1.87, 95% CI: 1.09–3.22) were risk factors for hypertension. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers were the most commonly used antihypertensive medication (45.4%) as monotherapy, and 13.6% of treated hypertensive patients used two drugs. Conclusions. There is a considerable prevalence of hypertension with low awareness, treatment, and control rates among Tajik nomads in Pamirs, where health programs improving the hypertension status are urgently needed, with the excess weight loss as a strategy.

Abstract Background: The prevalence of hypertension in China increased recent years. There are some surveys reported the hypertension status in different regions in China. However, little data revealed the epidemic status of hypertension among Tibetans at high altitude area in Ngawa. In this study, we explored the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension in this special population. Methods: The cross-sectional analysis data was collected from 2228 Tibetan residents in seven high-altitude areas of Ngawa from September 2018 to June 2019, using a stage cluster sampling method. All participants were measured their blood pressure by trained physicians and have completed the questionnaire in the local hospital and health clinics. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg and /or diastolic blood pressure(DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg according to standards in China. Results: The prevalence rate of hypertension was 24.6% in this area, which was similar to previous survey results the general population in China (23.2%). The awareness rate (32.3%), treatment rate (21.7%), and control rate (6.2%) of hypertension in high altitudes were lower than in the plain area in China. Compared to the 2015 Sichuan rural survey, the awareness rate increased (32.3% vs 24.6%), but the treatment rate (21.7% vs 24.7%) and the control rate (6.2% vs 14.7%) remained low. Conclusions: From the results, we can come to a conclusion that the rates of awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension remain unexpected low in Tibetans, especially in female Tibetan at high altitude area of Ngawa. The related factors may include poor medical conditions, economic underdevelopment and traditional Tibetan customs. We hope to add some Tibetan data to the clinical epidemiology database of hypertension and hope the study can be used for future research.

Abstract Elevated blood pressure (BP) is a growing burden worldwide, leading to over 10 million deaths each year. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global initiative to raise awareness of high BP and act as a temporary solution to the lack of screening programmes worldwide. We aimed to screen for hypertension and cardiovascular risk factors in people aged ≥18 years in the community, thereby defining the proportion of subjects with elevated BP and assess the awareness and the effectiveness of its treatment. An opportunistic cross-sectional survey of volunteers aged ≥18 years was carried out in May 2019. Blood pressure measurement, the definition of hypertension and statistical analysis followed the standard MMM protocol. From May 2019 to June 2019, through 10 cities/provinces in Vietnam, 25 887 individuals with mean age 48.7 (SD ±17.7) years were screened. After multiple imputations, 8758 (33.8%) had hypertension. Of individuals not receiving antihypertensive medication, 3025 (15.0%) were hypertensive. Of individuals receiving antihypertensive medication, 2800 (48.8%) had uncontrolled BP. Raised BP [systolic BP (SBP) ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP (DBP) ≥90 mmHg] was also associated with additional risk factors including smoking, alcohol intake, previous hypertension in pregnancy, and obesity. May Measurement Month 2019 was the most extensive BP screening campaign ever undertaken in Vietnam. Undiagnosed and uncontrolled hypertension in Vietnam remains a substantial health problem. Local campaigns applying standardized methods such as MMM 2019 will be beneficial to screen for the significant number of individuals with raised BP and increase the awareness of hypertension.

Abstract Hypertension continues to be the leading cause of death and disability in the industrialized world, with a high level of unawareness and unacceptably poor control. Therefore, the Argentinian Society of Hypertension, in agreement with the May Measurement Month (MMM) initiative of the International Society of Hypertension, implemented for the second consecutive year an educational campaign during the month of May 2018. A volunteer cross-sectional survey was carried out in public spaces and health centres during the month of May 2018 across 33 cities in Argentina. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure (BP) ≥140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg based on the mean of the 2nd and 3rd of three consecutive BP measurements, or in those on treatment for high BP. Statistical analysis including multiple imputation followed the MMM protocol. A total of 70 418 individuals were screened during MMM18, after excluding those under 18 years old. Of the total, 43.8% of participants were classified as hypertensive, 77.7% were aware of their diagnosis, 69.1% were on pharmacological treatment, and 38.7% were controlled. Of those on antihypertensive medication, 56.0% were controlled. It is necessary to reinforce strategies not only to increase the awareness and control of hypertension but also to identify the population groups, in which these strategies would have the greatest impact, helping to reduce the enormous health burden attributed to hypertension.

Abstract We performed a May Measurement Month (MMM) screening campaign among adult volunteers aged 18 years old and over in Tunisia. The objective was to raise awareness, and to estimate the prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension, one of the main cardiovascular risk factors. Following the MMM protocol, three blood pressure (BP) measurements were taken by physicians and standard interviewing procedures were used to record medical history, socio-demographic, and cardiovascular disease risk factors. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg or treatment with antihypertensive medication. From 11 271 adults screened, the prevalence of hypertension was 38.1%. Among those with hypertension, 72.5% were aware of their diagnosis, and 67.5% were treated. BP control was achieved in only 38.2% of all those with hypertension. The study highlights the magnitude of hypertension in Tunisia. There is an urgent need for implementing a comprehensive integrated population-based intervention programme to ameliorate the growing problem of hypertension.

Abstract Vietnam in the Asia Pacific region has a high hypertension (HTN) prevalence. The May Measurement Month (MMM) program was enthusiastically responded to in Vietnam by launching and deploying it across the whole country from 2017. The aims of the MMM 2018 program in Vietnam were to screen at least 15 000 people aged 18 and over across the country; to inform participants of the risks associated with HTN; and thereby define the proportion of subjects with elevated blood pressure (BP) and assess the awareness and the effectiveness of its treatment. An opportunistic cross-sectional survey of volunteers aged ≥ 18 was carried out in May 2018. Blood pressure measurement, the definition of HTN, and statistical analysis followed the standard MMM protocol. From May 2018 to June 2018, through 10 cities/provinces in Vietnam, 17 332 individuals with mean age 47.0 ± 17.9 years were screened during MMM18. After multiple imputation, 5260 (30.3%) had HTN. Of individuals not receiving antihypertensive medication, 1956 (13.9%) were hypertensive. Of patients receiving antihypertensive medication, 1540 (46.6%) had uncontrolled BP. Those who had HTN also displayed many additional risk factors similarly to MMM 2017 including smoking, alcohol, overweight-obesity, and diabetes. In conclusion, MMM 2018 campaign is a continuation program of MMM 2017 that has promoted the strength of the BP screening survey in the community in Vietnam, which hopefully will influence on awareness of disease prevention in this century. The next steps of the program will have special innovations on how to reduce the frequency of focusing on variable risk factors to change the overall picture of HTN in Vietnam.

Abstract Hypertension is a global public health challenge, but awareness, treatment, and control rates remain low. May Measurement Month (MMM) creates a platform for awareness creation and opportunistic screening which can identify significant numbers with raised blood pressure (BP). We present results of the 2018 edition of MMM in Cameroon. A cross-sectional survey of self-selected volunteers aged ≥18 years was conducted in May 2018. The definition of hypertension and statistical analyses followed the standard protocol. Data were collected from 28 public (indoors and outdoors) and private locations which were assigned unique site identification numbers, over a 30-day period. Of the 8883 participants screened, 53.8% were male and the median age was 35 (interquartile range 21) years, and 30.0% reported not having a previous BP measurement. After imputation, 1867 (21.0%) were hypertensive, 645 (34.5%) were aware of their diagnosis, and 507 (27.2%) were on antihypertensive medication, among whom 242 (47.8%) had controlled BP. In linear regression models adjusting for age, sex, and the use of antihypertensive medication, systolic and diastolic BP were significantly higher in participants aware of their diagnosis, those on antihypertensive medication, and who reported alcohol intake of 1–3 times per month and, one or more times per week. Hypertension prevalence is the lowest, and awareness, treatments, and control rates the highest reported in epidemiological studies in Cameroon in the last two decades. Further surveys will be useful in evaluating the impact, if any, of the MMM campaign on the burden of hypertension in the Cameroon.

Background: May Measurement Month (MMM) 2020 was not officially executed globally due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But in Nepal, the MMM 2020 was conducted by following COVID-19 safety measures. Methods: We used an opportunistic screening campaign for blood pressure measurement among individuals ≥18 years in Nepal. Of the three measurements, the second and third measurements were used to estimate the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure(BP). We defined hypertension as the systolic BP ≥ 120 or diastolic BP≥90 mmHg and or currently taking antihypertensive medicine. Results: Among the total 11,486 participants, 57%(6568/11486) were females. The mean age of the screenees was 45years(SD=17.0). The mean systolic and diastolic BP were 125.8(SD= 18.0) and 81.6(SD=10.5) respectively. About 31.3%(3592/11481) participants had hypertension. Among the hypertensive persons, 40.2%(1444/3592) were aware of their hypertension status. Among these who were aware, 79.4%(1146/1444) were taking antihypertensive medicine. However, the overall proportion of hypertensive patients taking medicine was 32.0%(1146/3592). The BP was controlled among 46% ( 527/1444) of participants who were under medication. Logistic regression analysis adjusting age, sex, body mass index(BMI), and smoking status found males, higher age groups, higher BMI, and smokers had higher odds of being hypertensive. (Figure 1) Conclusion: The results suggest a need to address the gap in awareness, diagnosis, and treatment of hypertension in Nepal. Abstract Background prehypertension and hypertension are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Despite its importance, hypertension is often underestimated and undiagnosed, especially in women. This study was designed to determine trends in prevalence of prehypertension and hypertension, awareness, treatment, control and cardiovascular risk factors among the Iranian menopausal women. Methods This repeated Cross-sectional study was conducted on 8073 individuals which 1013 of these subjects were menopausal women older than 40, in Iran, in the years of 2001, 2007 and 2016. Samples were selected through random, multistage, cluster sampling. The data collected by the questionnaire included clinical information and blood pressure was determined via arm digital blood pressure monitors. Results The prevalence of hypertension was in the years 2001, 2007 and 2016, respectively % 52.6, % 49.0 and % 51.6, no significant changes were observed(p=0.628). The prevalence of Prehypertension over these years (% 56.6, %.53.3 and % 42.2) was significantly decreased (p=0.006). The Trends of awareness (p=0.015), treatment (p=0.009) and control (p<0.001) of hypertension in menopausal women with high blood pressure has significantly increased. Despite the increasing trends of drug treatment for hypertension, hypertension is uncontrolled in more than a third of subjects. Hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus and Body mass index increased significantly from 2001 to 2016 among the menopausal women. Conclusions The results showed that hypertension and Prehypertension are highly prevalent among Iranian menopausal women and markedly increased with age. Interventional population-based approaches are needed to improve knowledge and efficient practice that may help lower the risk for hypertension and CVD among this at risk population.

Kenya is experiencing a rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), yet data to inform effective interventions are limited. We investigated the prevalence of elevated blood pressure, elevated blood glucose and their determinants in a rapidly urbanizing area in Kenya. Data on socio-demographics, dietary and behavioural risk factors, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, blood glucose, plasma lipids and urinary biomarkers were collected from 221 men and 372 women (25–64 years). Multivariable logistic regression models assessed correlates of elevated blood pressure (EBP) and elevated blood glucose (EBG). Participants’ mean age was 38.0. ± 11.1 years. The prevalence rates of pre-hypertension and hypertension were 49.0% and 31.6% in men and 43.7% and 20.1% in women, respectively, while those of pre-diabetes and diabetes were 8.4% and 8.0% in men and 11.6% and 7.4% in women, respectively. The prevalence of Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 was higher in women (60.2%) than in men (39.7%). However, both the risk of EBP and EBG were stronger among men than among women. The high prevalence rates of EBP, EBG and overweight/obesity coupled with low physical activity and low fruit and vegetable intake predispose this population to a higher NCD risk. Interventions to mitigate this risk considering the sex differences are urgently required.

Abstract Introduction EUROASPIRE V was a cross-sectional survey carried out by the European Society of Cardiology, EURObservational Research Programme in 2016–2017 in 27 European countries Purpose To describe gender differences in lifestyle and risk factor management, and the use of cardioprotective drug therapies in patients with coronary heart disease in Europe. Methods Patients <80 years with coronary disease (CABG, PCI or an acute coronary syndrome) were identified from the hospital medical records and interviewed and examined by trained staff ≥6 months and ≤2 years later using standardized methods including central laboratory measurements. Results A total of 8,261 (25.8% females), mean age 63.6 (SD 9.6) were interviewed, with a median time between the index event and interview 1.12 years (IR 0.82–1.56). Women were older (mean age 65.4 years [SD 9.2] vs 63.0 [9.7] and had a lower level of education than men.Comparing women with men, the prevalence of the risk factors were as follows: current smoking 12.8% vs 20.7%,obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) 45.7% vs 34.9%, central obesity (waist circumference ≥102 cm in men or ≥88 cm in women) 78.0% vs 51.8%, raised blood pressure (BP ≥140/90 mmHg, ≥140/80 mmHg in patients with diabetes) 47.1% vs 46.0%, elevated LDL-cholesterol (≥1.8 mmol/l) 77.9% vs 68.5% and self reported diabetes 33.1% vs 28.0%. Reported use of prophylactic drug therapies for the same comparison was: antiplatelets 91.8% vs. 92.8%; beta-blockers 81.8% vs. 80.8%; ACE inhibitors/ARBs 75.0% vs. 75.3%; and statins 76.8% vs. 82.2%. The therapeutic control of blood pressure, LDL-cholesterol and diabetes (HbA1c <7 mmol/L) was: 48.2% vs 49.9%; 25.7% vs 34.1% and 48.5% vs 56.7%, respectively. Conclusions The results show that women with coronary disease have higher prevalence of obesity, central obesity, elevated LDL-cholesterol and self-reported diabetes than men. There were no differences in terms of blood pressure management. All coronary patients require professional support to make lifestyle changes and manage risk factors more effectivelyin order to reduce their risk of recurrent cardiovascular events.
