Dyslipidemia is an important cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which are the most prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of cinnamon on body weight gain, food intake, and serum lipid profiles of albino rats. This study was conducted on 30 healthy male albino rats weighing approximately 130 ± 5 g. The study was divided into the following two experiments: experiment (1), wherein rats were fed a laboratory diet; and experiment (2), wherein rats were fed a high-fat diet. In experiment 1, a total of 15 rats were divided into three groups. Group A (n=5, untreated control) was fed laboratory diet, Group B n=5 was fed laboratory diet and cinnamon powder (2 g/kg body weight), and Group C n=5 was fed laboratory diet and cinnamon powder (4 g/kg body weight) for 30 days. In experiment (2), a total of 15 rats were similarly divided into three groups. Group D (n=5, treated control) was fed laboratory diet plus high-fat diet, Group E n=5 was fed cinnamon powder (2 g/kg body weight) mixed with laboratory diet plus high-fat diet, and Group F n=5 was fed cinnamon powder (4 g/kg body weight) mixed with laboratory diet plus high-fat diet daily for 30 days. An administration of 4 g/kg body weight of cinnamon extract powder decreased the final weight by 4.4%, body weight gains by 31.41%, food intake by 1.7%, and food efficiency ratio by 22.38% in hypercholesterolemic adult male rats as well as serum total cholesterol by 31.22%, triglyceride by 24.05%, and LDL-C by 43.49%, with an increase in the levels of HDL-C by 30.16%, furthermore, a significant decrease in serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-C levels and increasing serum HDL-C on day 30 were observed P<0.001. This finding provides scientific evidence to substantiate the traditional use of cinnamon to treat hyperlipidemia.

Abstract Objectives The dietary fat content plays an important role in the regulation of chronic metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Here, we tested the impacts of triacylglycerol structure on the body weight gain and food intake of mice in a high-fat diet (HFD) setting. Methods Male C57/BL6J mice at 6 weeks old were fed one of the following three diets for 6 weeks, Teklad Rodent Diet chow diet (number 8640), the chow diet containing 36% (w/w) 1,2-Dipalmitoyl-3-oleoylglycerol (PPO), or the chow diet containing 36% (w/w) 1,3-Dipalmitoyl-2-oleoylglycerol (POP). Each group contained 9 mice, and their food intake and BW were measured daily. The mice were euthanized after 6 weeks (12 weeks old) for tissue sample collection. Results Both high HFD groups had significantly higher BW gain and caloric intakes than the chow diet group. Mice fed the POP diet had a lower percentage of BW gain and consumed less accumulated calories than those fed the PPO diet, as well as a significantly lower liver to BW ratio. Since week 4, the body BW rate of the POP group started to be lower than that of the PPO diet group. Conclusions TAG structures in an HFD setting affect the BW gain rate and obesity in mice. The different structures of fat added to affect the food intake and BW gain differently in an HFD setting. In the future, we would like to compare the changes of the hepatic lipogenesis enzyme in these mice. This will help us to understand how the triacylglycerol structures in the diet affect lipid metabolism in mice. Funding Sources Internal.

Objective: This study was planned to study the anti-obesity activities of solasodine on high fat (HF) diet-induced obese rats.Methods: Wistar rats were divided into six groups. Control group (Group 1) received normal diet and 0.5 % CMC (5 ml/kg). HF control group (Group 2) received HF diet. Group 3 received orlistat (25 mg/kg body weight per oral). Group 4, 5 and 6 received 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight solasodine respectively. Treatment was given for 6 w to the respective group along with HF diet. Body weight, food intake and abdomen circumference was measured every week for 6 w. On day 42, the serum biochemical parameters like blood glucose and insulin, serum leptin, total cholesterol and triglyceride were evaluated. Animals were sacrificed with overdose of diethyl ether. The liver and retroperitoneal adipose tissues were removed and weighed immediately.Results: Treatment with solasodine at dose of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg significantly (p<0.001) reduced body weight, abdomen circumference and retroperitoneal adipose tissue weight as compared to the HF diet control group. Solasodine also significantly reduced serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose level as compared to HF diet control group (***p<0.001, **p<0.01, *p<0.05 when compared with normal control. ###p<0.001, #p<0.05 when compared with high fat control). In addition, it also inhibited the induction of fatty liver with accumulation of hepatic triglyceride.Conclusion: Solasodine exhibited anti-obesity effect by showing a reduction in body weight, abdomen circumference, total cholesterol level, triglyceride level and glucose level in high-fat diet fed rats.

In the present study, the methanolic extract of Moringa oleifera leaves (MEMOL) was evaluated for antiobesity activity in rats. The antiobesity potential of MEMOL was studied against high fat diet-induced obesity (HFD) in rats. In this study, chronic administration of HFD in rats produced hypercholesterolemia (116.2 ± 0.27 mg/dL), which led to an increase in the body weight (225 gr), total cholesterol, triglycerides (263.0 ± 4.69 mg/dL), and attenuation in the levels of HDL (34.51 ± 2.20 mg/dL) as well as changes in body temperature of animals. Treatment of obese rats with MEMOL for 49 days resulted in a significant (P<0.001) change in body weight, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL level along with a significant (P<0.001) increase in body temperature as compared to the HFD-induced obesity. MEMOL treated rats also showed a significant decrease in the level of liver biomarkers, organ weight, and blood glucose level. Further, rats treated with MEMOL (200 mg and 400 mg/kg) show reduced atherogenic index (1.7 ± 0.6 and 0.87 ± 0.76). The results indicate that the rats treated with Moringa oleifera (MO) have significantly attenuated the body weight without any change in the feed intake and also elicited significant thermogenic effect and to act as hypolipidemic and thermogenic property in obesity related disorders.

Objective: To determine the effects of Nigella sativa and sunflower oil diet intake on serum lipid profile in albino rats. Material& Methods: Eighty four albino rats with equal number of males and females were selected for the study, they were divided into six differentgroups, Control groups1,111,V,were given low fat diet(3%),high fat diet(20%), high fat diet supplemented with bile salt (1% colic acid) andantithyroid drug (0.5% propylthiouracil). The Experimental groups were given the above diets with supplemented Nigella sativa. Low fat dietincreased all the lipid fractions significantly when given at12 and 24 weeks duration as compared to 0 week. Results: The high fat diet whengiven at different intervals decreased all lipid fractions significantly as compared to baseline level. The high fat diet with propylthiouracil andbile salt also increased all the lipid fractions and the increase was more as compared to previous groups. The supplements of Nigella sativain the groups decreased all the lipid fractions significantly as compared to the control groups except HDL-c, which was significantly increasedin all the experimental groups as compared to control groups. Conclusion: On the basis of these findings conclusions are made, that Nigellasativa has got TG,TC, and LDL-c lowering and HDL-c raising effects.3% sunflower oil low fat diet has got TG,TC,HDL-c, and LDL-c raisingeffects.20% sunflower oil high fat diet has got TG,TC,HDL-c and LDL-c lowering effects. Both Nigella sativa and sunflower oil have got lowatherogenic index (TC/HDL) and may be recommended in hyperlipidaemic patients or normal individuals.

Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to investigate the main and interactive effects of fat and sodium content of the diet on food intake, body weight and composition, glucose metabolism and blood pressure in male Wistar rats. Methods Male Wistar Rats (n = 48, initial body weight: 115.30 ± 1.73 g) were allocated into 4 groups (n = 12/group) and received one of the following diets: Normal sodium normal fat (NSNF), normal sodium high fat (NSHF), high sodium normal fat (HSNF), high sodium high fat (HSHF) diet for 12 weeks. Body weight (BW) and food intake (FI) were measured weekly. Short-term food intake (1, 2 and 12 hours food intake after 12 hours fasting) was measured at week 6. Body composition and organs’ weight were measured at week 12. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, pulse and fasting blood glucose (FBG) were measured and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was conducted at weeks 1, 4, 8 and 12. Results Regardless of sodium content, a greater FI (both gram and cal) was observed in rats fed normal fat diet compared with those fed high fat diet. Consistently, FI (g) at 1, 2 and 12 hours was higher in rats fed a normal fat diet. However, no difference in calorie intake was observed at any time point. Higher BW and fat (%) was observed in high fat diet groups. Moreover, greater kidneys’ weights was observed in high sodium diet groups. Fasting blood glucose was higher in rats fed a normal sodium diet compared with those fed a high sodium diet while the tAUC glucose response to glucose preload was higher in rats fed a high fat diet compared with those fed a normal fat diet which is consistent with higher body weight in high fat diet groups. Regardless of fat content of the diet, pulse was higher in rats fed a high sodium diet compared with those fed a normal sodium diet. No effect of either dietary sodium or fat content of the diet on SBP or DBP was observed. Conclusions Fat but not sodium content of the diet is a determining factor in regulation of FI and BW. Moreover, both fat and sodium content of the diet influence the glucose metabolism potentially through different mechanisms. While pulse is influenced by sodium content, the results of this study do not support the effect of sodium or fat content of the diet on either SBP or DBP.
