The nonlinear dynamics of an incommensurate fractional-order single-machine infinite-bus (SMIB) power system benchmark model are explored and studied by means of modern nonlinear analysis theories, such as bifurcation, chaos, power spectral density (PSD), and bicoherence methods. The effect of incommensurate order derivatives on power system dynamics is presented. The study reveals that the power system undergoes interesting dynamics such as periodic motion, chaotic oscillations, and multistability whenever the system parameter values fall into particular ranges. A new fractional-order linear augmentation-based control scheme is applied to damp out the power system’s chaotic oscillation, change the stability of the coexisting states, and drive the system from multistability to monostability. The stability of the proposed control system is derived using Lyapunov theory. Simulation results confirmed the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control scheme in damping power system oscillations and achieving good overall performance. The results in this paper will give a better understanding of the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of the incommensurate fractional-order SMIB power system.

Abstract In this paper, a new control scheme is proposed to achieve stability for a single-machine infinite-bus power system. A power system model simultaneously considering input saturation and time-varying uncertainties is presented. A sufficient condition for the system convergence is given and based on this result, a switching excitation control law with auxiliary system is designed. The stability analysis and simulation results all show that the developed controller is effective.

The stability of the power system is a critical issue for the reliable and safe operation of the network. Where maintaining voltage levels constant or within the prescribed permissible limit and robustness against disturbances, while the power system is working near its stability margin due to growth of power consumption, nowadays are great challenges. Chaotic oscillation in power network may lead to system bus voltage collapse, angle divergence and possibly both phenomena simultaneously. These cases directly affect the service quality of the power system. The paper presents the problem of chaos suppressing in a three-bus power system of a six-dimensional model. The dynamics of the power system are investigated through examining the nonlinear system’s behavior analysis tools, such as power spectral density, bicoherence, Poincaré map and the Lyapunov exponents. The chaotic oscillation of the power system is suppressed through a Lyapunov-based adaptive algorithm with synergetic control theory. A nonlinear evolution constraint is used for achieving better transient responses and fast dynamics. The dynamics of the energy storage device and STATCOM compensator are employed within the control loop to restore the synchronous operation and maintain the rated voltage, respectively. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control algorithm. The stabilization of the chaotic power system dynamics and the fast recovery to the normal state are characterized by a smooth and free-of-chattering controller output.

The main purpose of the paper is to control chaotic oscillation in a complex seven-dimensional power system model. Firstly, in view that there are many assumptions in the design process of existing adaptive controllers, an adaptive sliding mode control scheme is proposed for the controlled system based on equivalence principle by combining fixed-time control and adaptive control with sliding mode control. The prominent advantage of the proposed adaptive sliding mode control scheme lies in that its design process breaks through many existing assumption conditions. Then, chaotic oscillation behavior of a seven-dimensional power system is analyzed by using bifurcation and phase diagrams, and the proposed strategy is adopted to control chaotic oscillation in the power system. Finally, the effectiveness and robustness of the designed adaptive sliding mode chaos controllers are verified by simulation.

Remote farms in Africa are cultivated lands planned for 100% sustainable energy and organic agriculture in the future. This paper presents the load frequency control of a two-area power system feeding those farms. The power system is supplied by renewable technologies and storage facilities only which are photovoltaics, biogas, biodiesel, solar thermal, battery storage and flywheel storage systems. Each of those facilities has 150-kW capacity. This paper presents a model for each renewable energy technology and energy storage facility. The frequency is controlled by using a novel non-linear fractional order proportional integral derivative control scheme (NFOPID). The novel scheme is compared to a non-linear PID controller (NPID), fractional order PID controller (FOPID), and conventional PID. The effect of the different degradation factors related to the communication infrastructure, such as the time delay and packet loss, are modeled and simulated to assess the controlled system performance. A new cost function is presented in this research. The four controllers are tuned by novel poor and rich optimization (PRO) algorithm at different operating conditions. PRO controller design is compared to other state of the art techniques in this paper. The results show that the PRO design for a novel NFOPID controller has a promising future in load frequency control considering communication delays and packet loss. The simulation and optimization are applied on MATLAB/SIMULINK 2017a environment.

This article proposes a computationally efficient adaptive robust control scheme for a quad-rotor with cable-suspended payloads. Motion of payload introduces unknown disturbances that affect the performance of the quad-rotor controlled with conventional schemes, thus novel adaptive robust controllers with both integer- and fractional-order dynamics are proposed for the trajectory tracking of quad-rotor with cable-suspended payload. The disturbances acting on quad-rotor due to the payload motion are estimated by utilizing adaptive laws derived from integer- and fractional-order Lyapunov functions. The stability of the proposed control systems is guaranteed using integer- and fractional-order Lyapunov theorems. Overall, three variants of the control schemes, namely adaptive fractional-order sliding mode (AFSMC), adaptive sliding mode (ASMC), and classical Sliding mode controllers (SMC)s) are tested using processor in the loop experiments, and based on the two performance indicators, namely robustness and computational resource utilization, the best control scheme is evaluated. From the results presented, it is verified that ASMC scheme exhibits comparable robustness as of SMC and AFSMC, while it utilizes less sources as compared to AFSMC.

Anti-synchronization of two different chaotic systems is investigated. On the basis of Lyapunov theory, adaptive control scheme is proposed when system parameters are unknown, sufficient conditions for the stability of the error dynamics are derived, where the controllers are designed using the sum of the state variables in chaotic systems. Numerical simulations are performed for the Chen and Lu systems to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

In this paper, based on the earlier research, a new fractional-order chaotic Genesio-Tesi model is established. The chaotic phenomenon of the fractional-order chaotic Genesio-Tesi model is controlled by designing two suitable time-delayed feedback controllers. With the aid of Laplace transform, we obtain the characteristic equation of the controlled chaotic Genesio-Tesi model. Then by regarding the time delay as the bifurcation parameter and analyzing the characteristic equation, some new sufficient criteria to guarantee the stability and the existence of Hopf bifurcation for the controlled fractional-order chaotic Genesio-Tesi model are derived. The research shows that when time delay remains in some interval, the equilibrium point of the controlled chaotic Genesio-Tesi model is stable and a Hopf bifurcation will happen when the time delay crosses a critical value. The effect of the time delay on the stability and the existence of Hopf bifurcation for the controlled fractional-order chaotic Genesio-Tesi model is shown. At last, computer simulations check the rationalization of the obtained theoretical prediction. The derived key results in this paper play an important role in controlling the chaotic behavior of many other differential chaotic systems.

According to forced power oscillation theory, the opening of flow guide vane varies dramatically, when governor system occurs oscillation. At serious condition, prime mover’s output is affected, consequently the power system loses stability. Constructing generator and governor system modal, and then discussing the transfer function of each part, the statement indicates that dynamic characteristic can be rectified though phase compensation. as result the stability and dynamics characteristic of power system is also enhanced. Building a single-machine infinite-bus simulation model based on MATLAB, results verify the correctness of the theory analysis.

SUMMARYThis paper presents a fractional-order sliding mode control scheme equipped with a disturbance observer for robust impedance control of a single-link flexible robot arm when it comes into contact with an unknown environment. In this research, the impedance control problem is studied for both unconstrained and constrained maneuvers. The proposed control strategy is robust with respect to the changes of the environment parameters (such as stiffness and damping coefficient), the unknown Coulomb friction disturbances, payload, and viscous friction variations. The proposed control scheme is also valid for both unconstrained and constrained motions. Our novel approach automatically switches from the free to the constrained motion mode using a simple algorithm of contact detection. In this regard, an impedance control scheme is proposed with the inner loop position control. This means that in the free motion, the applied force to the environment is zero and the reference trajectory for the inner loop position control is the desired trajectory. However, in the constrained motion the reference trajectory for the inner loop is determined by the desired impedance dynamics. Stability of the closed loop control system is proved by Lyapunov theory. Several numerical simulations are carried out to indicate the capability and the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
