The coal pillar stress distribution at the 311102 working face in the Bayangaole Mine is analyzed and revealed. In addition, borehole stressmeter, PASSAT monitoring system, and numerical modelling are fully utilized. Based on the patterns of acoustic wave velocity distribution, it is discovered that the impact created by mining activity can expand into the working face around 40 m, where the peak stress concentration is found about 15 m ahead. According to borehole stressmeter readings, mildly impacted, ordinarily impacted, and severely impacted zones are distinguished. The equilibrium theory and corresponding calculation indicated that the coal body in front of the working face has a plastic zone width of 4.96 m. The stress-displacement analysis based on numerical simulation showed that the relationship between peak vertical stress and pillar width is unimodal and bimodal. Specifically, both 5 and 10 m wide pillars showed a unimodal stress-width correlation and the peak vertical stresses are all located at the pillar center, whereas 15 m wide pillar has a bimodal stress-width relationship. In comparison, 10 m wide pillar holds the maximum in-situ stress. In consideration of site conditions and economic influences, 6 m wide coal strip coal pillar is designed at the working face 311102. As a result, stopping was successfully completed, and remarkable economic benefits were achieved.

Coal bumps happened many times in mining at No.5 seam of Tangshan coal mine. Strengthen the roadway’s support of working face can effectively reduce disaster losses. With the research background of the 3654 working face, the mine pressure monitoring for the existing support form of roadway has been carried on. Perform a numerical simulation for the original roadway support, base on the in-situ stress and physical and mechanical characteristics of surrounding rock in experimental; study the impact of the stability of roadway’s surrounding rock, while the space change of trellis and change of supporting intensity; optimizing the original support form, so as to maximum reducing the impact of the coal bumps.

There are abundant CBM (Coalbed Methane) in China. These CBM has caused a remarkable problem to the coal-mining in China. In order to improve the structure of Chinese energy and eliminate the risk of coal mine gas, the relevant industries and sections have implemented many explorations in CBM enriched areas. With great achievements, there are many important problems in the actions of CBM exploitation. The disadvantageous interaction of the surface CBM well and the later coal mining has been ignored at all. There are many disadvantages and defects. To solve these problems and eliminate or weaken the disadvantageous, the scientific and reasonable design of surface CBM well location is an important step. With the thinking of surface condition, coal mining plan, the arrangement of coal mine laneway, the direction and scale of the in-situ stress, and thinking more about the negative influence to and of surface CBM well, according to the theories of mining dynamics, mining engineering, mining geomechanics, and the CBM engineering, the design theory of the surface CBM well net can be studied. Finally, the arrangement principle of CBM product well in coal field is presented. The existing or future coal pillar will be a critical location for the surface CBM well location.

Large scale underground caverns are under construction in high in-situ stress field at Houziyan hydropower station. To investigate deformation and damage of surrounding rock mass, a elastoplastic orthotropic damage model capable of describing induced orthotropic damage and post-peak behavior of hard rock is used, together with a effective approach accounting for the presence of weak planes. Then a displacement based back analysis was conducted by using the measured deformation data from extensometers. The computed displacements are in good agreement with the measured ones at most of measurement points, which confirm the validities of constitutive model and numerical simulation model. The result of simulation shows that damage of surrounding rock mass is mainly dominated by the high in-situ stress rather than the weak planes and heavy damage occur at the cavern shoulders and side walls.

Deep mining has become the normal state of coal mining; compared with the mine with shallow buried depth, the consequent high level of in situ stress and complex distribution have brought severe threats to the stability of the stope and the surrounding rock of the roadway. In this research, taking the 121304 working face of Kouzidong Mine as the engineering background, the characteristics of mining-induced stress distribution under complex in situ stress environment in deep mining are analyzed by using on-site measurement of the original rock stress and mining stress, establishing a theoretical model centered on the middle section of the working face, and establishing large-scale numerical calculation models for different advancing directions. It was found that under deep mining conditions, the maximum stress of the original rock is 25.12 MPa, and the direction is vertical. The advanced influence range of mining stress is about 150 m, and the abutment pressure presents a three-peak distribution characteristic in front of the working face. The research results provide important theoretical guiding value for guiding the mining of coal mines with similar geological conditions.

In the inclination direction, the fracture law of a longwall face roof is very important for roadway control. Based on the W1123 working face mining of Kuangou coal mine, the roof structure, stress and energy characteristics of W1123 were studied by using mechanical analysis, model testing and engineering practice. The results show that when the width of W1123 is less than 162 m, the roof forms a rock beam structure in the inclined direction, the floor pressure is lower, the energy and frequency of microseismic (MS) events are at a low level, and the stability of the section coal pillar is better. When the width of W1123 increases to 172 m, the roof breaks along the inclined direction, forming a double-hinged structure, the floor pressure is increased, and the frequency and energy of MS events also increases. The roof gathers elastic energy release, and combined with the MS energy release speed it can be considered that the stability of the section coal pillar is better. As the width of W1123 increases to 184 m, the roof in the inclined direction breaks again, forming a multi-hinged stress arch structure, and the floor pressure increases again. MS high-energy events occur frequently, and are not conducive to the stability of the section coal pillar. Finally, through engineering practice we verified the stability of the section coal pillar when the width of W1123 was 172 m, which provides a basis for determining the width of the working face and section coal pillar under similar conditions.

The traditional method to design coal pillar for lateral roof roadway was established based on the mining-induced strata movement contour which is considered as a straight line, while ignoring the variations of the internal strata deformation law as well as stress distribution characteristics. In order to make up for this deficiency, in this study, evolution of mining-induced stress in the overlying strata was simulated using physical and numerical simulations, and a method to design coal pillar for lateral roof roadway based on mining-induced stress was proposed. The results indicate that the stress of the overlying strata is redistributed during excavation, and the stress distribution can be divided into a stress-relaxation area, a stress-concentration area, and an in situ stress area. The contour line of 1.05 times the in situ stress is used to define the mining-induced stress contour. Stress inside the contour is redistributed while outside the contour the overlying strata are still within the in situ stress area. Mining-induced stress contour presents a concave-upward type from coal seam to the overlying strata that cannot be merged into a straight one due to their different characteristics of movement and deformation. With this in mind, this study proposed a method to design the width of coal pillar for lateral roof roadway according to the mining-induced stress contour. According to mining-induced stress contour, the width of coal pillar for lateral roof roadway of longwall panel 31100 is 160 m, and the maximum deformation of the roadway is 270 mm. The new method can definitely meet engineering demands.

In order to study the stress distribution and its dynamic influence law while the protective layer mining, based on the transfer law of mining-induced stress in the coal seam floor and in front of the working face, using numerical simulation software to simulate the surrounding rock stress under the different pillar width mining conditions, and carried through the roadway deformation engineering practice observations. It is shown that reserved 110m coal pillar could weaken the impact on the front of the floor tunnel under the protective layer mining process. When the top liberated layer mining to reduce the impact of mining stress superposition, it should avoid the terminal lines on the two coal seams at the same location and may be staggered at least about 30m ~ 50m. And it obtained that the roadway deformation not only by mining impact, but also considering the geological environment surrounding rock conditions, tunnel position in which layers of rock, rock properties and other factors. The research guided the engineering practice successfully.

The investigation of the influence of in situ stress in Open Pit Mine (OPM) projects has not been accorded a deserved attention despite being a fundamental concern in the design of underground excavations. Hence, its long-term potential adverse impacts on pit slope performance are overly undermined. Nevertheless, in mines located in tectonically active settings with a potential high horizontal stress regime like the Songwe mine, the impact could be considerable. Thus, Using FLAC3D 5.0 software, based on Finite Difference Method (FDM) code, we assessed the role of stress regimes as a potential triggering factor for slope instability in Songwe mine. The results of the evaluated shearing contours and quantified strain rate and displacement values reveal that high horizontal stress can reduce the stability performance of the pit-wall in spite of the minimal change in Factor of Safety (FoS). Since mining projects have a long life span, it would be recommendable to consider “in situ stress-stability analyses” for OPM operations that would be planned to extend to greater depths and those located in tectonically active regions.
