The study involved the selection of two isolates from Bacillus subtilis to investigate their inhibitory activity against some bacterial pathogens. B sub-bacteria were found to have a broad spectrum against test bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. They were about 23-30 mm and less against Klebsiella sp. The sensitivity of some antibodies was tested on the test samples. The results showed that the inhibitory ability of bacterial growth in the test samples using B. subtilis extract was more effective than the antibiotics used.

Purpose of work is a compilation of data about the microflora which colonizes a split-system, with the aim of selection of sanitary-indicative microorganisms, whose presence in the sample would indicate to the need for cleaning and disinfection of split-systems. Materials and methods. In the article there were used data of five years author’s scientific inquiry, related to the prevention of respiratory diseases, associated with the usage of a local air conditioning systems. We also use the data from the literature. Results. For selection of “indicative” microorganisms, we proposed the usage of nine criteria, each of them have numeric value from 0 to 3 points (risk for health, prevalence rate of the disease, epidemiological link, speed of split system’s colonization, difficulty of cultivation, resistance in the environment, resistance to disinfectants, frequency of detection in home air conditioning systems, frequency of detection in air conditioning systems of public buildings). After the calculation Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus received maximal score (20 points). Therefore, these two types of bacteria are indicative microorganisms. The detection of these microorganisms in split systems will indicate to the contamination of air-conditioning system. This microflora also is a criterion of cleaning and disinfection quality - presence of these microorganisms in the samples after this process will mean that the processing of air conditioning systems was performed poorly. Conclusions. Split systems are very faster colonized by conditionally pathogenic and pathogenic microflora. To prevent the possible hazard for population’s health it is necessary to develop the normative base, according to which sanitary-and-hygienic control over the split-systems working must be carried out. Proposed criteria suggest that Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are indicative microorganisms, and it’s identification in the air-conditioning system would mean risk for health and necessity for cleaning and disinfection.

Abstract Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) was a second most common commensal bacterium in healthy conjunctival sacs. When the corneal epithelial barrier is damaged, P. aeruginosa could cause keratitis, which progresses rapidly and results in corneal perforation and the loss of vision. However, the similarities and differences in characteristics between P. aeruginosa isolates from the eyes with keratitis and those from healthy conjunctival sacs are still poorly understood. In this study, four P. aeruginosa isolates from eyes with keratitis and three P. aeruginosa isolates from healthy conjunctival sacs were obtained, and genotypically characterized using Illumina high-throughput RNA sequencing. A total of 557 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found and included 332 upregulated genes and 225 downregulated genes in the keratitis group versus the healthy conjunctival sacs group. Of 557 DEGs, 11 DEGs analyzed with GO enrichment and the KEGG pathway were involved with the bacterial secretion system and pyoverdine metabolism and validated using quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. P. aeruginosa from eyes with keratitis induced more severe corneal infection and higher clinical scores in the mice. These results will contribute to develop alternative therapeutic interventions targeting virulence factors in these DEGs and facilitate the selection of therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT We report our clinical experience treating a critically ill patient with polymicrobial infections due to multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a 56-year-old woman who received health care in India and was also colonized by Candida auris. A precision medicine approach using whole-genome sequencing revealed a multiplicity of mobile elements associated with NDM-1, NDM-5, and OXA-181 and, supplemented with susceptibility testing, guided the selection of rational antimicrobial therapy.

ABSTRACT Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the main models to study social behaviors in bacteria since it synthesizes several exoproducts, including exoproteases and siderophores and release them to the environment. Exoproteases and siderophores are public goods that can be utilized by the individuals that produce them but also by non-producers, that are considered social cheaters. Molecularly exoprotease cheaters are mutants in regulatory genes such as lasR, and are commonly isolated from chronic infections and selected in the laboratory upon serial cultivation in media with protein as a sole carbon source. Despite that the production of exoproteases is exploitable, cooperators have also ways to restrict the growth and selection of social cheaters, for instance by producing toxic metabolites like pyocyanin. In this work, using bacterial competitions, serial cultivation and growth assays, we demonstrated that rhamnolipids which production is regulated by quorum sensing, selectively affect the growth of lasR mutants and are able to restrict social cheating, hence contributing to the maintenance of cooperation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa populations.
