Strange-face illusions are apparitional perceptions of deformed faces, unknown people and monstrous beings – that are produced when staring for a long time at one’s own face reflected in a mirror or when eye-to-eye staring at another person in a dyad, at low level room illumination. In this experiment, portrait artists were invited to draw strange-face illusions they perceived during a 10-minute session of eye-to-eye gazing while paired in dyads with naïve participants. Dissociation was measured through standard self-report questionnaires. Results showed that portraits became more abstract and less figurative as the artists experienced higher levels of non-pathological dissociation. Statistically, a significant correlation was found between art-abstraction ratings and dissociation scores by judges and portrait artists, respectively. Findings are discussed in relationship to modern art portraits à la manière de Scipione and Francis Bacon.

BACKGROUND Currently, changing behaviors with the assistance of mobile applications has been popularized. However, most of the participants are unable to persist in participating in behavior-changing activities for a long time. Some researchers have studied what factors motivate people to maintain behaviors-changing actions. There has been controversy about whether the commonly used triggers, negative results or competitions, could motivate behavior changes. In the meantime, the main methodology these researchers have been using is to conduct experiments, from which data was collected from subjects’ recalling previous behavior changing. The experiments are time-consuming, and the results can be unreliable. To resolve this problem, the Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) was developed to record real-time feedback. However, the EMA unavoidably increases the workload of the subjects. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the factors affecting behavior change, especially from the motivation aspect. Additionally, this paper attempted to identify a way to record human behavior changes without increasing the subjects’ workload. METHODS The methodology of “self-report” was adopted to report how people’s views regarding the behavior-changing intervention. To achieve a balance between workload and being timely, the self-reporting data was recorded once a day. After the 28-day “self-report” experiment, the “focus group” method was used to gather people’s feedback on behavior changing process. RESULTS This paper identified 9 factors: cooperation, competition, award, understandable graphic, reminder and alarm, trust and willing, gender, relation with disease and environmental factors). These factors could affect motivation of behavior changing. Besides, we found that negative results could be a motivation for behavior changing. In the experiment, we also found that a small number of subjects tended to cheat for a more “beautiful” result. The last part of the paper has presented possible implications for technology design to facilitate behavior-changing. CONCLUSIONS In particular, (i) the research promoted the possibility of cheating when recording data which is ignored by existing research and will make the digital applications less useful; (ii) the results show that not all cooperation is needed to lead to a positive effect; (iii) the research identified the negative results caused by over-competition in behavior change. Finally, the paper proposes technology design directions should focus on giving motivation through keeping dairy, negative results feedback and avoid cheating.

Background. Organizational behavior plays a significant role in the effectiveness of enterprises specializing in nanotechnology. Its negative side – counterproductive work behavior (CWB) – has not been analyzed sufficiently in this industry. We evaluated different theoretical approaches to this problem. Objective. To estimate the predominant forms of counterproductive work behavior in relation to dimensions such as the intensity of the nanotechnology industry, seniority in the organization, and the age and gender of the subjects. Design. We used a descriptive exploratory methodology that analyzes the preponderance of counterproductive work behavior in profile companies throughout the Russian Federation. CWB was assessed through a self-report questionnaire and in-depth interview with each employee. The results were analyzed by correlation-regression analysis in SPSS. Results. We found significant correlations between the variables “intensity of the nanotechnology industry within the organization”, “seniority of employees within the organization”, “age of employees”, and the total score of CWB. Regarding the CWB dimensions, the highest average of the scores was obtained for “low level of conscientiousness” (mean = 21.75; SD = 2.9), followed closely by “low level of personal development” (mean = 20.53; SD = 3.09). Among the CWB dimensions, it seems that the conscientiousness of the employees plays a key role in the continuation of their professional activity and consequently in the increase of seniority in the organization. Conclusion. A professional difficulty can be perceived as a challenge by an employee with good physical and/or psychological resilience. Russian nanotechnology companies should evaluate their approach to dealing with employees and mitigate situations that might be unnecessarily stressful. From the data obtained through the semi-structured interview, we found that what happens in a work group is essential in the emergence of CWB. Organizations need clear policies that empower employees to deal with certain work tasks and with employees who engage in specific CWB.

Introduction: The word orphan comes from the Greek word ‘Orfanos’ and refers to a child permanently bereaved of or abandoned by his or her parents. Methods: A non-experimental descriptive comparative design has been adopted for the present study. The sample of the present study comprises orphan children residing in an orphanage and non-orphan children residing in selected areas of Bagalkot. The sample comprised 30 orphans and 30 non-orphans aged between 10 and 16 years. The data were collected by using self-report, structured closed-ended questionnaires for socio-demographic variables of children, self-administered WHO Quality of life BREF scale, and PSS stress scale. The data obtained were analysed with the help of descriptive and inferential statistics. Result: Findings related to the comparison between the level of stress among the orphan and non-orphan children revealed that majority of orphan children (76.66%) had about moderate stress, 23.33% of the orphan children had high stress, and none of the children had a low level of stress, whereas among non-orphan children, majority (90%) had moderate stress, 10% had low level stress, and none of them had high level stress. The findings related to the comparison of levels of quality of life among the orphan and non-orphan children reveal that a high percentage of orphan children (66.66%) had a moderate quality of life and some of them (33.33%) had a poor quality of life, whereas a high number of non-orphan children (66.66%) had a very good quality of life and some (33.33%) had a good quality of life. No significant association was found between the quality of life and stress scores with the socio-demographic variables of orphan and non-orphan children. Conclusion: The study concluded that orphan children need to improve their quality of life and decrease their level of stress.

This study was conducted in the Poultry farm of the animal during the Production department, Iraqi during the (Ministry of Science and Technology) period from 3-9-2001 to 8-4-2002. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of low – level chronic aflatoxicosis on performance (body weight, feed conversion efficiency and mortality), Serum biochemistry and activity of some enzymes (GOT,GPT, ALKP, LDH). A total of 300 male chicks of broiler breeder (Faw–Bro) were used. Chicks at day 1 of age were fed diets contaminated with aflatoxine at levels of 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5 the feeding period were extended to 8 weeks. The data were subjected to analysis of variance by the completely randomized design. The results showed the presence of a number of fungi especially the type of Aspergillus flavus genus that reaches 40%. All aflatoxine dose levels significantly (P < 0.05) decreased live weight, it was also noticed that there were higher significant decrease in feed conversion when aflatoxine level was elevated in the feed. Increasing mortality with each increasing in aflatoxine level, the low level of chronic aflatoxine in the diets caused increased in the relative weight of internal organs (Liver, Pancreases, spleen, heart, gizzard, fibresia gland) as a results of aflatoxine presence in the diet, the low level of chronic aflatoxicosis for long time decreased in packed cell volume percentage, heamoglbulin concentration and red blood cell cont., with increase in white blood cells and (neutrophil, Hetrophil, Lymphocyte). The aflatoxine increased the serum concentration of protein, albumin, Cholesterol, Phosphor the activity of LDH, GOT, GPT, AIKP.

Air conditioners are widely used in buildings to maintain thermal comfort for long time. Air conditioners produce sounds during operation, and air conditioners are regarded as one of the main noise sources in buildings. Most sounds produced by the air conditioner do not fluctuate over time and sound quality of the steady sounds produced by the air conditioner have been evaluated. However, air conditioners sometimes produce low-level and impulsive sounds. Customers criticizes such sounds are annoying when they sleep and they spend time quietly in the living room. The aim of this study was to determine the factors that significantly influence the psycho-physiological response to the low-level impulsive sounds produced by air conditioners. We assessed the A-weighted equivalent continuous sound pressure level (LAeq) and factors extracted from the autocorrelation function (ACF). Subjective loudness, sharpness, annoyance, and electroencephalography (EEG) were evaluated. Multiple regression analyses were performed using a linear combination of LAeq, the ACF factors, and their standard deviations. The results indicated that LAeq, the delay time of the first maximum peak, the width of the first decay of the ACF, and the magnitude and width of the IACF could predict psycho-physiological responses to air conditioner sounds.

Abstract Uniformly stratified flows approaching long and dynamically tall ridges develop two distinct flow components over disparate time scales. The fluid upstream and below a “blocking level” is stagnant in the limit of an infinite ridge and flows around the sides when the ridge extent is finite. The streamwise half-width of the obstacle at the blocking level arises as a natural inner length scale for the flow, while the excursion time over this half-width is an associated short time scale for the streamwise flow evolution. Over a longer time scale, low-level horizontal flow splitting leads to the establishment of an upstream layerwise potential flow beneath the blocking level. We demonstrate through numerical experiments that for sufficiently long ridges, crest control and streamwise asymmetry are seen on both the short and long time scales. On the short time scale, upstream blocking is established quickly and the flow is well described as a purely infinite-ridge overflow. Over the long time scale associated with flow splitting, low-level flow escapes around the sides, but the overflow continues to be hydraulically controlled and streamwise asymmetric in the neighborhood of the crest. We quantify this late-time overflow by estimating its volumetric transport and then briefly demonstrate how this approach can be extended to predict the overflow across nonuniform ridge shapes.

At universities for students, the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduced anti-pandemic measures turned out to be psycho-traumatic factors that increased the experience of loneliness. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence of the phenomenon of loneliness among university students in five European countries, taking into account the variety of anti-COVID measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, questionnaires of 2316 students. In Russia, Poland and Ukraine a hard lockdown was introduced during the pandemic. Lithuania (in the first months) did not undertake severe restrictions, and for a long time the danger of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was not recognized in Belarus. The students in Lithuania and Belarus, 33 and 35 points. Students from Poland, Russia and Ukraine: 38, 37, 37 points, respectively. All respondents were classified according to three levels of loneliness experience. A low level (<40) was noted in 1,510 cases (65.2%), medium (40‒60) — 740 people (32.0%), high (>60) experience of loneliness — 66 respondents (2.8%). Among the representatives of Lithuania and Belarus, a low level of subjective feeling of loneliness prevailed (about 70% of respondents), while in Ukraine, Russia and Poland the share of low indicators was significantly less, respectively, 65.2%, 59.8% and 57.8%. University students from five countries who participated in the study do not experience high levels of loneliness. Gradation of the prevalence of feelings of loneliness from minimum to maximum in comparison is as follows: LT — BY — RU—UA—PL. The severity of loneliness is associated with the levels of restrictions in the countries during the pandemic.

Roy de Maistre was born in New South Wales and is recognized as an initiator of modern art practices in Australia. Aware of the new European painting schools of Post-impressionism and abstraction only through reading, de Maistre worked to devise a method of allying color tones with musical notes and used the findings to produce works stylized in form and colour. This interest in color, music, and decorative geometric form would characterize his future work. De Maistre also worked in design, first in the field of colour therapy for shell-shocked soldiers and later producing a colour wheel—patented as ‘‘The De Mestre Color Harmonising Chart’’—which gave directions for the matching of colours and tones and became very popular with interior decorators. In the 1930s, after moving to England, de Maistre joined the avant-garde group of painters centred round Herbert Read and the Mayor Gallery, London. He later became known as a painter of mainly religious works depicted in his highly coloured decorative cubist style. Besides being known for his own work, de Maistre is recognized for his formative influence on the British painter Francis Bacon and the Australian writer Patrick White.

&lt;p&gt;The col field (a region between two lows and two highs in the isobaric surface) is a common pattern leading to the generation of mesoscale vortex and heavy rainfall in China. The mesoscale vortex usually forms near the col point and the dilatation axis of the col field in the low-level troposphere.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Mesoscale model WRF was used to numerically simulate a rainfall process in col field. A temperature perturbation column (TPC) was introduced into the low-level col field near the col point, and the effects of TPC on mesoscale vortex and rainfall was analyzed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It was shown that in the region of strong wind background, the TPC moves downstream and has little effect on the environment, while near the col point, the wind speed and the vertical wind shear are small, the TPC can stay in the col field for a long time, which can have a greater impact on the environment. The strong TPC near the col point can trigger the vortex. As the temperature of the air column increases, the pressure drops, leading to the low-level convergence and the upper-level divergence, and the low-level cyclonic vorticity form under the effect of ageostrophic winds, which is favor of the formation of mesoscale vortex in the weak wind field. The formation of vortex promotes the intensification of precipitation. The release of the latent heat of the condensation induced by the TPC makes a positive feedback for the mesoscale vortex. The southwestly low-level jet enhances through the thermodynamic action, resulting in convergence of the leeward low-level jet and increase of precipitation, and divergence of the upwind low-level jet and decrease of precipitation, respectively. The col field is a favorable circumstance for the formation of mesoscale vortex.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Acknowledgements. Abstract Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) are an essential component of cyclogenesis, and their structure and characteristics determine the intensity and severity of associated cyclones. Case studies were performed by simulating tropical cyclones that formed during the pre- and postmonsoon periods in 2007 and 2010 over the Bay of Bengal (BoB). The pre- (post) monsoon environment was characterized by the coupling of northwesterly (southwesterly) wind to the early advance southwesterly (northeasterly) monsoonal wind in the BoB. The surges of low-level warm southwesterlies with clockwise-rotating vertical shear in the premonsoon period and moderately cool northeasterlies with anticlockwise-rotating vertical shear in the postmonsoon period transported moisture and triggered MCSs within preexisting disturbances near the monsoon trough over the BoB. Mature MCSs associated with bimodal cyclone formations were quasi linear, and they featured leading-edge deep convection and a trailing stratiform precipitation region, which was very narrow in the postmonsoon cases. In the premonsoon cases, the MCSs became severe bow echoes when intense and moist southwesterlies were imposed along the dryline convergence zone in the northern and northwestern BoB. However, the development formed a nonsevere and nonorganized linear system when the convergence zone was farther south of the dryline. In the postmonsoon cases, cyclogenesis was favored by squall-line MCSs with a north–south orientation over the BoB. All convective systems moved quickly, persisted for a long time, and contained suitable environments for developing low-level cyclonic mesovortices at their leading edges, which played an additional role in forming mesoscale convective vortices during cyclogenesis in the BoB.
