Background. Professional experience is one of the most discussed problems in modern labor psychology. Researchers are trying to expose and describe the system of cognitive and metacognitive skills and abilities, which gives an advantage to experienced professionals. However, there is still a sufficient number of contradictions and unexplored aspects. The aim of the study is to identify specific features of problem solving by chemists at different levels of professional experience by analyzing performance indicators and eye movements. Techniques and sampling. The pilot study involved 35 experts and novices in the field of chemistry. They were asked to read descriptions, find errors and fill in gaps in chemical process diagrams. The tasks were based on technological regulations for the production of chemical products. We recorded the run time, errors and indicators of eye movements with the SMI Hi-Speed contactless video recording system with a 1200 Hz frequency. The results showed that the run time and the number of errors were significantly lower for experts than for novices. In addition, the two groups featured significant differences in the average duration of blinking, indicating a higher emotional stress among novices. Other eye movement differences demonstrated that experts tend to favor focal type of cognitive processing. This is revealed in longer fixations, short and slow saccades. Also, the experts were characterized by an uneven distribution of attention and cognitive efforts relative to different parts of the task and by a smaller number of transitions between them. The general analysis showed that experts, solving problems, rely more on mental representations and previous knowledge, while novices are guided by the information presented on the slides. Conclusions. The data demonstrate the superiority of experts in solving chemical problems and reveal the cognitive structure of professional experience.

An eye tracker experiment investigated 4-, 6-, and 8-year old children’s cognitive processing of film cuts. Nine short film sequences with or without editing errors were presented to 79 children. Eye movements up to 400 ms after the targeted film cuts were measured and analyzed using a new calculation formula based on Manhattan Metrics. No age effects were found for jump cuts (i.e., small movement discontinuities in a film). However, disturbances resulting from reversed-angle shots (i.e., a switch of the left-right position of actors in successive shots) led to increased reaction times between 6- and 8-year old children, whereas children of all age groups had difficulties coping with narrative discontinuity (i.e., the canonical chronological sequence of film actions is disrupted). Furthermore, 4-year old children showed a greater number of overall eye movements than 6- and 8-year old children. This indicates that some viewing skills are developed between 4 and 6 years of age. The results of the study provide evidence of a crucial time span of knowledge acquisition for television-based media literacy between 4 and 8 years.

The affective dimension of pain contributes to pain perception. Cognitive load may influence pain-related feelings. Eye tracking has proven useful for detecting cognitive load effects objectively by using relevant eye movement characteristics. In this study, we investigated whether eye movement characteristics differ in response to pain-related feelings in the presence of low and high cognitive loads. A set of validated, control, and pain-related sounds were applied to provoke pain-related feelings. Twelve healthy young participants (six females) performed a cognitive task at two load levels, once with the control and once with pain-related sounds in a randomized order. During the tasks, eye movements and task performance were recorded. Afterwards, the participants were asked to fill out questionnaires on their pain perception in response to the applied cognitive loads. Our findings indicate that an increased cognitive load was associated with a decreased saccade peak velocity, saccade frequency, and fixation frequency, as well as an increased fixation duration and pupil dilation range. Among the oculometrics, pain-related feelings were reflected only in the pupillary responses to a low cognitive load. The performance and perceived cognitive load decreased and increased, respectively, with the task load level and were not influenced by the pain-related sounds. Pain-related feelings were lower when performing the task compared with when no task was being performed in an independent group of participants. This might be due to the cognitive engagement during the task. This study demonstrated that cognitive processing could moderate the feelings associated with pain perception.

AbstractThe important role of student agency in collaborative problem-solving has been acknowledged in previous mathematics education research. However, what remains unknown are the processes of agency in open-ended tasks that draw on real-life contexts and demand argumentation beyond “mathematical”. In this study, we analyse a video recording of two student groups (each consisting of four students) taking part in collaborative problem-solving. We draw on the framework for collaborative construction of mathematical arguments and its interplay with student agency by Mueller et al. (2012). This original framework is supplemented by (i) testing and revising it in the context of open-ended real-life tasks, with (ii) student groups rather than pairs working on the tasks, and by (iii) offering a strengthened methodological pathway for analysing student agency in such a context. Based on our findings, we suggest that the framework suits this new context with some extensions. First, we note that differences in student agency were not only identified in terms of the discourse students drew on, but in how students were able to shift between various discourses, such as between “mathematical” and “non-mathematical” discourses. We identify a novel discourse reflecting student agency, invalidation discourse, which refers to denying other students’ agency by framing their contribution as invalid. Finally, we discuss the need to reframe “mathematical” arguments—and indeed student agency—while the task at hand is open-ended and concerns real-life contexts.

  One of the main rules of subtitling states that subtitles should be formatted and timed so that viewers have enough time to read and understand the text but also to follow the picture. In this paper we examine the factors that influence the time viewers spend looking at subtitles. We concentrate on the lexical and structural properties of subtitles. The participant group (N = 14) watched a television documentary with Russian narration and Finnish subtitles (the participants’ native language), while their eye movements were tracked. Using a linear mixed-effects model, we identified significant effects of subtitle duration and character count on the time participants spent looking at the subtitles. The model also revealed significant inter-individual differences, despite the fact that the participant group was seemingly homogeneous. The findings underline the complexity of subtitled audiovisual material as a stimulus of cognitive processing. We provide a starting point for more comprehensive modelling of the factors involved in gaze behaviour when watching subtitled content. Lay summary Subtitles have become a popular method for watching foreign series and films even in countries that have traditionally used dubbing in this regard. Because subtitles are visible to the viewer a short, limited time, they should be composed so that they are easy to read, and that the viewer has time to also follow the image. Nevertheless, the factors that have impact the time it takes to read a subtitle is not very well known. We wanted to find out what makes people who are watching subtitled television shows spend more time gazing at the subtitles? To answer this question, we recorded the eye movements of 14 participants when they were watching a short, subtitled television documentary. We created a statistical model of the gaze behavior from the eye movement data and found that both the length of the subtitle and the time the subtitle is visible are separate contributing factors. We also discovered large differences between individual viewers. Our conclusion is that people process subtitled content in very different ways, but there are some common tendencies. Our model can be seen as solid starting point for comprehensive modelling of gaze behavior of people watching subtitled audiovisual material.

The main aim of this research are to describe (1) cognitive learning outcomes of students who were taught using the cognitive apprenticeship using reciprocal teaching (RT), scardamalia and bereiter’s F.W (SB), and schoenfeld problem solving (SPS) strategies and (2) metacognitive skill level of students who are taught using the cognitive apprenticeship with RT, SB, and SPS strategies. This type of research is experimental research using the static group pretest-posttest design consisting of three classes of experiments with different treatments. Research subjects are students of XI IPA 2 SMA Darul Ulum Unggulan BPPT Jombang by the number of each class of experiments is 22 students. Instruments used are in the form of test and questionnaire. Students' cognitive learning outcomes data obtained will be analyzed with one way ANOVA using SPSS 19 and questionnaire data will be described.The result of data analysis revealed that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. It means that there was differences in cognitive learning outcomes of students who were taught using the cognitive apprenticeship with RT, SB, and SPS strategies. Metacognitive skill level of individual students experiencing increased tendency for RT, SB, and SPS class, while the average grade of students' metacognitive skills is in grade 3, developing grade for RT and SB class, while grade of students' metacognitive skills is in grade 4, ok grage for SPS class. It can be concluded that the cognitive apprenticeship learning with SPS strategy can be used to teach metacognitive skills with more scaffolding and advised to use RT and SB strategies for suitable characteristics topic (reading and writing)Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan (1) Hasil belajar kognitif siswa yang diajarkan menggunakan magang kognitif dengan strategi reciprocal teaching (RT), scardamalia and bereiter’s F.W (SB), dan schoenfeld problem solving (SPS), (2) Tingkat keterampilan metakognitif siswa yang diajarkan menggunakan magang kognitif dengan strategi RT, SB, dan SPS. Jenis penelitian yang dilakukan adalah experimental research menggunakan static group pretest- postest design yang terdiri dari tiga kelas eksperimen dengan perlakuan yang berbeda-beda. Subjek penelitian yaitu siswa kelas XI IPA SMA Darul Ulum 2 Unggulan BPPT Jombang dengan jumlah masing-masing kelas eksperimen adalah 22 siswa. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa soal tes dan angket. Data hasil belajar kognitif siswa yang diperoleh akan dianalisis dengan anava satu jalur menggunakan SPSS 19 dan data angket akan dideskripsikan. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan hasil belajar kognitif siswa yang diajar menggunakan magang kognitif dengan strategi RT, SB, dan SPS. Tingkat keterampilan metakognitif siswa secara individual mengalami kecendrungan meningkat untuk kelas RT, SB, dan SPS, sedangkan secara rata - rata kelas tingkat keterampilan metakognitif siswa berada pada tingkat 3 yaitu tingkat developing untuk kelas RT, dan SB, sedangkan untuk kelas SPS berada pada tingkat 4 yaitu tingkat ok. Disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran magang kognitif dengan strategi SPS dapat digunakan untuk mengajarkan keterampilan metakognitif, dengan pendampingan yang lebih maksimal dan disarankan untuk menerapkan strategi RT dan SB pada topik yang memiliki karakteristik yang sesuai yaitu membaca dan menulis

This study aims to describe the profile of students' metacognitive skills in solving integral calculus problems seen from the aspects of planning, monitoring and evaluation metacognitive skills. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research methods. The subjects in this study were 3rd semester students who had taken courses or were taking calculus II courses for the 2020/2021 academic year which were carried out using purposive sampling technique. In this study, the instrument used was a test to measure the ability in solving integral calculus problems in the form of essay questions, unstructured interview guidelines, documentation and observation. Data were analyzed in three stages, namely reduction, presentation, and conclusion or verification. The results in this study were students with high problem solving abilities had met the indicators of metacognitive skills, namely the planning, monitoring and evaluation stages. Students with moderate problem-solving abilities have only reached indicators of metacognitive skills, namely the planning and monitoring stages, but have not reached the evaluation stage, while students with low problem-solving abilities have not measured metacognitive skills indicators both at the planning, monitoring and evaluation stages. So that students with high problem solving abilities are more likely to have good metacognitive skills, because students with high problem solving abilities are well organized from planning, monitoring to the evaluation stage.
