: The article is aimed at the study of Ukrainian quasi-historical novels of the early 21st century, characterized by the renunciation of “objectivity” of the narrative and emphasized the role of imagination. These are the pieces by Bakalets and Yarish (“From the Seventh Bottom”), Vynnychuk (“The Pharmacist”, “Lutetia”), and by Yatsenko (“Nechui. Nemov. Nebach”). The study reveals the features and functions of fantastic characters in the abovementioned novels. These fictional images of modern Ukrainian quasihistorical literary discourse are characterized by infernality, grotesque anthropomorphism, destruction of traditional antinomy “otherworldly– earthly/human”, philosophical and ironic coloring. Interpreting the fantasy in quasi-historical novels is expedient in the context of the global problem of perception of historical past by people of the 21st Century, with an emphasis on significant changes in public consciousness motivating writers to “Re-write/Reimagine the past”. The spread of this phenomenon reveals public distrust of the authorities, offering “correct” answers to the questions about past events, protest against permanent manipulation of historical facts (the tendency of growing consciousness and intellectualization of society).

Purpose. To analyze the artistic details of W. Scott’s and M. Starytsky’s historical novels to identify the author’s position on the details depicted; to compare the artistic and functional features of their local color, landscape, and objects; to show the intersections and differences in the development of both Scottish and Ukrainian literature and the interaction of different mentalities in the process of reflecting the world around.Methods. The research is carried out from the standpoint of complex literary-textological analysis, cultural-historical and comparative-typological methods.Results. As a result of the research, analysis of the types of artistic details in the historical novels of W. Scott and M. Starytsky was carried out; different types of artistic details were discovered, collected and systematized and their functions were revealed in separate works of the Ukrainian and Scottish novelist; the peculiarities of use of portrait details and landscapes, their place and role in the creative process of the writers are determined.Conclusions. Based on the analysis of the artistic detail in both writers’ historical novels, it can be argued that M. Starytsky, having mastered the experience of predecessors and contemporaries (and not only from domestic literature), developed his own system of images of the objective world and generally maintained it, albeit inconsistently, in all his multifaceted work. In this system, the writer’s scientific knowledge and his ideological and aesthetic principles were synthesized in a unique way, to which we include various factors – religious, historiosophical, national, stylistic, and so on. Scott’s experience became a kind of springboard for actively increasing the role of the authorial-subjective factor in literature and art, which is clearly defined in realistic novels of the second half of the nineteenth century, when attention was given to detailing the environment. Detailing, in the historical novels of W. Scott and M. Starytsky, serves as a historical background, conveys the spirit of the era, helps to reveal the temper and individuality of the character, his/her own artistic image, is a part of the landscape panorama as well as it is a means of emotional impact on the reader.Key words: artifact, subject detail, color local, verbal painting, portrait, ethnography.

Gábor Attila Csúr: “The Inclination to the Supernatural in the Middle Ages – A Critical Reading of Medieval Religiousness in Danish Historical Novels” The article focuses on Danish historical prose fiction from the last two centuries and analyzes how the phenomenon ‘medievalism’, i. e. the interpretation, reception and recreation of the Middle Age, has changed during this period. Stereotypes about medieval religious thought and belief and the role of the church have always been popular features of historical novels. By analyzing the depictions of religiousness, the article attempts to draw a line of development in understanding medieval culture and everyday life.

The present paper is based on the assumption that the language of the novel is characterized by a statistically relevant overrepresentation of certain linguistic units (e.g. lexemes, key words, collocations and colligations, Siepmann 2015). First steps towards checking the validity of this hypothesis had been undertaken in pioneering works in the 1990s/2000s (e.g. Stubbs & Barth 2003). These studies were however limited by the small size of their (exclusively English) corpora. The present study explores the role of some patterns (phraseological motifs) in distinguishing French literary subgenres. It also proposes a case study of some motifs related to the verbal (dire avec sourire ‘to say with a smile’) and non-verbal communication (adresser un sourire ‘to send a smile’). Unlike traditional corpus-stylistic analyses, which frequently focus on the style of a single author, our corpus-driven approach identifies lexico-syntactic constructions in literary genres which are automatically extracted from the corpora. The main purpose is to show the relevance of the notion of phraseological motif (Legallois 2012; Longrée & Mellet 2013; Novakova & Siepmann 2020) for the distinction of literary subgenres. Linking form and meaning, these ‘multidimensional units’ fulfil pragmatic as well as discursive functions. The data has been extracted from large French corpora of the PhraseoRom research project https://phraseorom.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr. They are accessible on http://phraseotext.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/phraseobase/index.html and contain 1000 novels (published from the 1950s to the present), partitioned into six sub-corpora: general literature (GEN), crime fiction (CRIM), romances (ROM), historical novels (HIST), science fiction (SF) and fantasy (FY).The results of our study reveal some unexpected differences between the literary subgenres: e.g. the motif dire d’une voix ‘to say in a voice’ in HIST compared to GEN. In FY, expressions of verbal communication are related to shouting and screaming. Expressions related to the non-verbal communication (prendre dans ses bras ‘to take in one’s arms’) are specific to ROM, where body language is overrepresented. In SF, there is a very limited number of these types of expressions. More generally, the motifs provide the link between the micro level (phraseological recurrences) and the macro level (the fictional script).

The article explores the feminine images of Martha from D. Hnatko’s novel «The Impious Soul» and Irena from N. Gurnitskaya’s novel «The Рurple Colour of Eternity» against the background of historical events. The actions in D. Hnatko’s novel take place at the beginning of the eighteenth century in the Left Bank Ukraine – in Poltava, in the city of Baturin, in Kiev. The author highlights the events related to the Baturyn tragedy and the Battle of Poltava. In the novel by N. Gurnitskaya the events covering all the twentieth century are reproduced as well as the modern time, namely pre-war pre-Soviet Lviv, Lviv during the Second World War, modern Lviv and Kiev with events on the Maidan. The author notes that the work is dedicated to her grandmother's sister, Anna Lozynsky (Burdan), and to all families who were repressed by the Stalinist regime. Against the background of these dramatic events for Ukraine, the complicated life of the main characters of the novels is shown. Martha's hardships are losing children, disappointment in love, feeling sick for the fate of sisters, mental anguish over hatred of her father, contemplating the terrible destruction of Baturin, perceiving war as a divorce, rescuing beloved man. The main meaning of life for Martha was love. Irenа studied in a private women’s gymnasium, loved to draw and had many plans, but fate prepared for the test: the loss of first love, the troubled times of the Soviets in Lviv, the arrest of beloved husband, the inhuman tortures of the Stalinist, burial of the eldest daughter and unsuccessful search for the younger daughter. Irena had a good family, a caring husband and children, but because of obstacles she could not achieve the desired happiness. These complicated destinies of Martha and Irena intertwined with those of other Ukrainians and are the expressions of the sufferings that have befallen these generations in different historical periods. The image of Martha shows the transition from a patriarchal representation of a woman to a strong-willed woman who defies social norms in the struggle for her feminine happiness. Martha is the prototype of Irena, which is the result of the evolution of the role of women in society. Martha has a rebellious temper, and therefore strives to choose her own destiny, even though she sees her happiness in love and motherhood. Irena is socially active, responsible for her life, unbreakable in all circumstances of life. Martha and Irena are found to embody the images of «woman-mother» and «beloved woman», since their existential need is precisely family values. This component forms a special spiritual atmosphere in the novels and presents the mentality of the Ukrainian people. Historical novels are an artistic reflection of the past, and they also enable to get acquainted with some tragic pages of the Ukrainian history. Therefore, they have their special value on the way to developing self-awareness of the Ukrainian nation.

The article tackles a vital problem of nowadays. The topicality of the title selected is determined by insufficient literary research of the motive of Ukrainian state formation highlighted in the writers’ works. A special role among the writers who raised the issues of state formation is played by R. Ivanychuk. This is a prominent writer of nowadays, the author of many collections of stories and short stories as well as the author of more than twenty historical novels. All the novels by Ivanychuk are united into one cycle and are based on the same material, the common historical events and characters as well as symbols and cross-cutting themes and ideas. The most significant of those ideas is the one of love for the homeland and for the nation as the sense of human existence. His book «Bless the Lord…» was published in 1993. In the foreword MP of Ukraine R. Ivanychuk as a writer and politician traces the history of his generation and the formation of its national consciousness after proclaiming the independence of Ukraine. The author shows how through parliamentary battles and party wars the brand new literary process emerged with a focus on literary and political leaders he knew well enough. This peculiar chronicle is based on a great number of memories of the difficult events associated with the creation of independent Ukraine after the collapse of the empire – the USSR. The author presents his memories as an integral part of the Ukrainian literature. From a writer’s point of view, a master of words cannot get rid of these age-old questions if he is truly hurt by the fate of the nation. The work is composed of two parts: «Literature and state» and «State and literature». This is a peculiar view of the problem – an artist and the power, the problem of the past and the future of our nation. In the writer’s view, the master of the word cannot evade from these everlasting questions if he or she really cares for the nation’s fate. Focusing on the high purpose of the writer, R. Ivanychuk in the second part of his memoirs mentions the difficult relationship between the writers and the authorities. This work evidences the main assignment of writing – building a new democratic Ukraine. Both in the analyzed work and in his numerous speeches, the writer emphasized that literature is a temple. And in this temple there should be no place for artisans from literature, who carry dirt into the spiritual life, disdain for man, for his future. The second part of the book abounds in the writer’s speculations about the role of literature in society and in requirements as per its high artistry level. The writer thinks that literature is a temple that cannot give any room for bunglers from literature who bring garbage to their works as well as disrespect for the human being and for his / her future.
