A general review of the taxonomic status of Thlaspi past and present is given, and a critical evaluations of its segregates based on both morphological and molecular data are  presented. ITS molecular phylogenetic study of Thlaspi aghricum and related species, as well as seed-coat morphology and anatomy strongly support the placement of the species in Noccaea. The new combination N. aghrica is proposed, and detailed description and distribution of the species are given.

The class Laboulbeniomycetes comprises biotrophic parasites associated with arthropods and fungi. Two orders are currently recognized, Pyxidiophorales and Laboulbeniales. Herpomyces is an isolated genus of Laboulbeniales, with species that exclusively parasitize cockroaches (Blattodea). Here, we evaluate 39 taxa of Laboulbeniomycetes with a three-locus phylogeny (nrSSU, ITS, nrLSU) and propose a new order in this class. Herpomycetales accommodates a single genus, Herpomyces, with currently 26 species, one of which is described here based on morphological and molecular data. Herpomyces shelfordellae is found on Shelfordella lateralis cockroaches from Hungary, Poland, and the USA. We also build on the six-locus dataset from the Ascomycota Tree of Life paper (Schoch and colleagues, 2009) to confirm that Laboulbeniomycetes and Sordariomycetes are sister classes, and we apply laboulbeniomyceta as a rankless taxon for the now well-resolved node that describes the most recent common ancestor of both classes.

AbstractThree traditional tribes of Fordini, Pemphigini and Eriosomatini comprise Pemphiginae, and there are two subtribes in Fordini and Pemphigini, respectively. Most of the species in this subfamily live heteroecious holocyclic lives with distinct primary host specificity. The three tribes of Pemphigini (except Prociphilina), Eriosomatini and Fordini use three families of plants, Salicaceae (Populus), Ulmaceae (Ulums) and Anacardiaceae (Pistacia and Rhus), as primary hosts, respectively, and form galls on them. Therefore, the Pemphigids are well known as gall makers, and their galls can be divided into true galls and pseudo-galls in type. We performed the first molecular phylogenetic study of Pemphiginae based on molecular data (EF-1α sequences). Results show that Pemphiginae is probably not a monophylum, but the monophyly of Fordini is supported robustly. The monophyly of Pemphigini is not supported, and two subtribes in it, Pemphigina and Prociphilina, are suggested to be raised to tribal level, equal with Fordini and Eriosomatini. The molecular phylogenetic analysis does not show definite relationships among the four tribes of Pemphiginae, as in the previous phylogenetic study based on morphology. It seems that the four tribes radiated at nearly the same time and then evolved independently. Based on this, we can speculate that galls originated independently four times in the four tribes, and there is no evidence to support that true galls are preceded by pseudo-galls, as in the case of thrips and willow sawflies.

Several collections of Amanita species from section Vaginatae have been reported to be strictly associated with Helianthemum plants growing in grasslands, a still largely under-explored ectomycorrhizal habitat. The main aim of this study was to investigate the taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of strictly Helianthemum-associated Amanita sect. Vaginatae taxa, informally named Amanita “helianthemicola”. Collections from Italy, England and France were included in this study. The morphologically closely related species complex A. lividopallescens was also examined. Analyses were carried out based on both morphological and molecular data (phylogenetic analysis of the nrITS sequences). All investigated Amanita collections, which are strictly associated with Helianthemum nummularium, turned out to be conspecific with A. simulans. Amanita simulans was recently described from Sardinia (Italy) from Populus nigra habitats based on morphological characters only. As the holotype of A. simulans was lost, a neotype is designated here based on a voucher from the original collecting area. Amanita simulans is re-described, and an extensive discussion on the morphological variability, host species range, distribution and related taxa is provided. Amanita lividopallescens was confirmed as a good species, and re-delimited based on our phylogenetic analysis; moreover, it was epitypified with a recent and well-documented collection from Corse (France). Amanita stenospora is a synonym of A. lividopallescens, being a colour form of the latter without taxonomic value.

A recent molecular phylogenetic study of the predominantly Mexican Brickellia resolved issues regarding its generic circumscription, but a new infrageneric classification remains to be formalized.  We propose to recognize as sections nine clades identified as monophyletic based on molecular data.  Three of these clades have been previously recognized as distinct genera, Barroetea, Kuhnia, and Phanerostylis, and require names at the sectional level.  The remaining six sections have names available from previous taxonomic work, but two of them require validation at the sectional level, and all have a different species composition compared to previous studies.

The recent delimitation of the cambalopsid genera Hypocambala and Glyphiulus is debatable. The focus of controversy is whether the presence of crests on the trunk rings is an appropriate key character dividing these two genera. To address this issue, we conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis including species with or without crests belonging to Hypocambala and species with crests belonging to Glyphiulus. The results of the phylogenetic analysis suggest that cambalopsids with crests are monophyletic and sister to a species without crests. Hypocambala polytricha, a cambalopsid with crests that is in a clade with crested Glyphiulus species, should be transferred to Glyphiulus. Therefore, a new combination is proposed, Glyphiulus polytrichus comb. nov. In addition, a discussion on the boundary between these two genera and a description of a new species, Hypocambala zizhongi sp. nov., are provided.

Molecular data on several species of trichodorids occurring in Iran are provided. Live specimens of two species, Trichodorus arasbaranensis and T. gilanensis, were collected from their type localities. One population of T. orientalis was collected from Arasbaran forests in Eastern Azarbayjan province. The species Paratrichodorus porosus, occurring in Gilan province, and one European isolate of P. pachydermus were also included in phylogenetic analysis. An Iranian population of T. minzi, representing only the second population found of this rare species, was recovered from soil samples collected from grasslands of north-western Iran and is in morphological congruence with the original description of the species. Besides morphological study, molecular phylogenetic study was performed on newly reported species using partial 28S rDNA data, and the phylogenetic relations of all sequenced species as inferred from Bayesian analysis are discussed. According to the phylogenetic tree, two newly described species, T. golestanensis and T. iranicus, formed a clade and further studies revealed they have the same morphology and molecular sequences of 28S rDNA D2-D3. Accordingly, T. golestanensis is regarded as a junior synonym of T. iranicus according to the Principle of Priority.

Abstract The phylogenetic position of most xiphidiocercariae from subgroups Cercariae virgulae and Cercariae microcotylae remains unknown or unclear, even at the family level. In this paper, we studied the morphology and molecular phylogeny of 15 microcotylous and virgulate cercariae (11 new and four previously described ones). Based on morphological and molecular data, we suggested five distinct morphological types of xiphidiocercariae, which are a practical alternative to Cercariae virgulae and Cercariae microcotylae subgroups. Four of these types correspond to actual digenean taxa (Microphallidae, Lecithodendriidae, Pleurogenidae and Prosthogonimidae), while the fifth is represented by Cercaria nigrospora Wergun, 1957, which we classified on the basis of molecular data for the first time. We reassessed the relative importance of morphological characters used for the classification of virgulate and microcotylous cercariae, and discussed the main evolutionary trends within xiphidiocercariae. Now stylet cercariae can be reliably placed into several sub-taxa of Microphalloidea on the basis of their morphological features.

Eight new specimens are reported for the caecilian amphibian Boulengerula fischeri, a species known in detail previously only from its holotype collected in 1987. The new material was collected at the type locality in Rwanda in 2009, and is used to expand and refine the morphological characterization of the species. Mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences were used to assess the phylogenetic position of B. fischeri in the context of a recent molecular phylogeny of six of the seven other species of Boulengerula (from Kenya and Tanzania). Among nominal species, only B. denhardti remains to be included in molecular phylogenetic studies of Boulengerula. Boulengerula is recovered as monophyletic, with either B. fischeri or (more probably) B. boulengeri sister to all other sampled species. There are at least three deep lineages within Boulengerula: (1) B. boulengeri, (2) B. fischeri, and (3) all other Eastern Arc Mountain and Coastal Forest species from Kenya and Tanzania. The status of Afrocaecilia, a genus erected by Taylor in 1968 to contain all Boulengerula except B. boulengeri, is not yet resolved.

It is very important to confirm and understand the genetic background of cultivated plants used in multiple applications. The genetic background is the history of crossing between maternal and paternal plants to generate a cultivated plant. If the plant in question was generated from a simple origin and not complicated crossing, we can easily confirm the history using a phylogenetic tree based on molecular data. This study was conducted to trace the origin of “Tottori Fujita 1gou” and “Tottori Fujita 2gou”, which are registered as cultivars originating from Phedimus kamtschaticus. To investigate the phylogenetic position of these cultivars, the backbone tree of the genus Phedimus needed to be further constructed because it retains inarticulate phylogenetic relationships among the wild species. We performed molecular phylogenetic analysis for P. kamtschaticus, Phedimus takesimensis, Phedimus aizoon, and Phedimus middendorffianus, which are assumed as the species of origin for “Tottori Fujita 1gou” and “Tottori Fujita 2gou”. The molecular phylogenetic tree based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and psbA-trnH sequences showed the monophyly of the genus Phedimus, with P. takesimensis forming a single clade. However, P. kamtschaticus and P. aizoon were scattered in the tree. It was verified that “Tottori Fujita 1gou” and “Tottori Fujita 2gou” were embedded in a clade with P. takesimensis and not P. kamtschaticus. Therefore, origination from P. takesimensis was strongly supported. Based on these results, molecular phylogenetic analysis is suggested as a powerful tool for clearly tracing the origin of cultivated plants.

Carajasia is described as a new genus of Rubiaceae. It is so far known only from the mountain summits of Serra dos Carajás (Pará, Brazil), where it is part of a shrubby vegetation surrounded by tropical rainforest. The new genus belongs to the tribe Spermacoceae and is positioned within it to the Spermacoce clade. Carajasia is unique within the clade in having a very particular combination of characters: flowering branches with two axillary flowers per node, homostylous flowers, corollas with a fringe of moniliform hairs, pubescent styles with distinct stigma lobes, bilobed nectariferous discs covered by triangular papillae, pollen with a double reticulum and fruits with a peculiar type of dehiscence. A detailed description of Carajasia is presented, including observations of the fruit and pollen, along with distribution maps and images of the plant in its habitat. A dichotomous key to distinguish Carajasia from other genera with deeply divided stigmas is provided. A molecular phylogenetic study was carried out using ITS and ETS sequences to determine the phylogenetic position of the new genus within the Spermacoce clade. The results of the combined analyses demonstrated that Carajasia is sister to Galianthe with moderate to high support. Both genera form a weakly supported clade with Schwendenera. This clade is sister to the other genera of the Spermacoce clade studied in this work. Galianthe and Schwendenera share with Carajasia pollen with a double reticulum, but they are clearly differentiated by suffruticose habit, heterostylous flowers and the pattern of fruit dehiscence. To clarify the phylogenetic position of Carajasia, some morphological characters are discussed based on the molecular results: division of the stigma, pollen types and floral syndrome.
