A detailed scanning electron microscopic investigation was carried out to clarify the taxonomic status of a small sigmoid Nitzschia species, a potential indicator of Central European soda waters. We found this taxon to be one of the dominant epiphytic diatoms collected from sodic bomb crater ponds at Apaj (Hungary). The large population allowed for a morphometric comparison based on frustule ultrastructure with the type material of the most similar species, Nitzschia austriaca Hustedt that was originally described from a soda pan in the region. The results clearly demonstrated an overlap between the Apaj population and the type material of N. austriaca (based on NMDS analysis), therefore we argue that they represent the same taxon. An emended diagnosis of N. austriaca is given. Total suspended solids and total phosphorous proved to be the most important factors predicting the occurrence of the species, with possible interactive effects of conductivity and pH. We then expanded the distribution of the species by revisiting data originating from previous large-scale surveys targeting sodic habitats in Hungary. On the basis of our results, N. austriaca is a characteristic species for Central European soda waters, including the protected astatic soda pans, indicating their typical chemical and physical characteristics.

Remarks on some European Aleocharinae, with description of a new Rhopaletes species from Croatia (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) Based on an examination of type and non-type material, ten species-group names are synonymised: Atheta mediterranea G. Benick, 1941, Aloconota carpathica Jeannel et Jarrige, 1949 and Atheta carpatensis Tichomirova, 1973 with Aloconota mihoki (Bernhauer, 1913); Amischa jugorum Scheerpeltz, 1956 with Amischa analis (Gravenhorst, 1802); Amischa strupii Scheerpeltz, 1967 with Amischa bifoveolata (Mannerheim, 1830); Atheta tricholomatobia V. B. Semenov, 2002 with Atheta boehmei Linke, 1934; Atheta palatina G. Benick, 1974 and Atheta palatina G. Benick, 1975 with Atheta dilaticornis (Kraatz, 1856); Atheta degenerata G. Benick, 1974 and Atheta degenerata G. Benick, 1975 with Atheta testaceipes (Heer, 1839). Remarks are presented about the relationships of Alevonota Thomson, 1858 and Enalodroma Thomson, 1859. The taxonomic status of Oxypodera Bernhauer, 1915 and Mycetota Ádám, 1987 is discussed. The specific status of Pella hampei (Kraatz, 1862) is debated. Remarks are presented about the relationships of Alevonota Thomson, 1858, as well as Mycetota Ádám, 1987, Oxypodera Bernhauer, 1915 and Rhopaletes Cameron, 1939. The publication date of several Atheta species described by G. Benick is discussed. Aloconota mihoki, Amischa forcipata, A. filum and Atheta boehmei are reported from Hungary, Croatia and Romania, respectively, for the first time. A new species, Rhopaletes slavoniae sp. n. is described from Croatia.

Some species of the subfamily Trochetinae Perrier, 1897 are very similar in the external morphology. In this paper we showed that characteristics of the reproductive system can be used as unmistakable features for the determination of the similar species. The atrium with its shape and extension of the cornua, as well as the shape and extension of the vasa deferentia and ovarian sacks, are very important features for the identification at the species level. We discussed similarity and differences between Dina stschegolewi (Lukin & Epshtein, 1960) and other yellow spoted Erpobdellids, i.e., D. orientalis Grosser et al. 2011, D. apathyi Gedroyć, 1916, D. pseudotrocheta Grosser & Eiseler, 2008), as well between Dina pseudotrocheta and Trocheta pseudodina Nesemann, 1990.The study of the reproductive system shows that the population from the Taunus Mt. assigned by Nesemann (1993) and Nesemann & Neubert (1999) to Trocheta bykowskii (syn. to T. cylindrica) clearly differs from T.cylindrica Örley, 1886. This population here is described as Trocheta taunensis n. sp.The taxonomic status of Trocheta intermedia Kutschera, 2010 is discussed. Morphological and anatomical studies of the type material show that Trocheta intermedia is a younger synonym of Dina punctata mauchi Nesemann, 1995.

In the present study, bivalves belonging to the superfamily Solenoidea that inhabit the Argentinean Sea are redescribed. The specimens studied in this work were collected by scuba diving in the Gulf of San José, Argentina. Additional specimens from different malacological collections were revised to update the geographical distribution of valid species. According to the literature, there exist two species for the “Argentinean” and “Magellan” biogeographical provinces. However, ten nominal taxa, with uncertain taxonomic status, have been mentioned for the study area. Field work, local collection survey and type material examination allow confirming two valid species: Solen (Ensisolen) tehuelchus Hanley (Solenidae) and Ensis macha (Molina) (Pharidae). A morphological comparison between S. tehuelchus and S. gaudichaudi Chenu and S. obliqua Spengler is provided as well type locality, repository and synonymy list. The type material of all related species are illustrated whenever possible. Establishing the valid names of these species is the first step towards more integrative studies including genetic and zoogeographical analyses.

Symphytum leonhardtianum, a member of the S. tuberosum complex, is investigated. This taxon was described by Pugsley in 1931, from the vicinity of Vienna, Austria. Nevertheless, it is generally not accepted in European floras. In this study, we conducted an evaluation of this taxon using flow cytometry, karyology and morphological analysis. Flow cytometric and karyological investigations of plants from the type locality of S. leonhardtianum revealed only dodecaploids (2n = 12x = 96), a ploidy level corresponding to the S. tuberosum subsp. tuberosum. The chromosome number of the S. tuberosum from Austria is here recorded for the first time. Morphological comparison of Central European populations of S. tuberosum complex showed that S. leonhardtianum did not differ significantly from S. tuberosum subsp. tuberosum. Based on our findings, we propose treating the name S. leonhardtianum as a heterotypic synonym of S. tuberosum subsp. tuberosum. The lectotype of S. leonhardtianum is designated.

Germfree state and food restriction have been shown to increase life span and delay tumor occurrence in rats. We report here the histologic, immunocytochemical and electron microscopic findings of adenohypophyses of aging, male Lobund-Wistar rats raised at Lobund Laboratories. In our previous study, the morphologic changes in the adenohypophyses of old rats have been extensively investigated by histology, immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy. Lactotroph adenomas were frequent in Long-Evans and Sprague-Dawley rats, whereas gonadotroph adenomas were frequent in Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats.Male Lobund-Wistar rats were divided into four groups: 1) conventional, which were raised under normal non-germfree environment and received food ad libitum; 2) germfree-food ad libitum; 3) conventional environment-food restricted and 4) germfree-food restricted. The adenohypophyses were removed from 6-month-, 18-month- and 30-month-old rats. For light microscopy, adenohypophyses were fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin.

The morphologic effects on somatotrophs of crude sheep hypothalamic extract prepared from stalk-median eminence were studied by electron microscopy in conjunction with concurrently run bioassays performed on the same tissue samples taken from young adult male Sherman rats.Groups were divided into uninjected controls and injected experimentals sacrificed at 5', 15', and 30' after injection. Half of each anterior pituitary was prepared for electron microscopic investigation, the other half for bioassay. Fixation using collidine buffered osmium tetroxide was followed by dehydration and embedment in Maraglas. Uranyl acetate and lead citrate were used as stains. Thin sections were examined in a Philips EM 200.Somatotrophs from uninjected controls appeared as described in the literature (Fig. 1). In addition to other components, these cells contained moderate numbers of spherical, electron-dense, membrane-bound granules approximately 350 millicrons in diameter.

Chromophobe pituitary adenomas arise from adenohypophysial cells and fail to exhibit cytoplasmic staining with conventional acid or basic dyes by light microscopy. The aim of the present work was to study the electron microscopic features of these tumors, to separate them into distinct entities and to correlate their fine structural appearances with secretory activity.Among 48 surgically removed various pituitary adenomas 30 tumors were found which, based on the tinctorial characteristics of the cytoplasm, corresponded to chromophobe adenomas. For electron microscopic investigation pieces of these tumors were fixed in 2.5 per cent glutaraldehyde in Sorensen's buffer, post fixed in 1 per cent osmium tetroxide in Millonig's buffer, dehydrated in graded ethanol and embedded in Epon 812. Ultrathin sections were stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate.By electron microscopy it was possible to separate chromophobe adenomas into 3 distinct entities: 1) adenomas consisting of sparsely granulated growth hormone cells (7 cases).

Although confronting cistemae (CC) have been observed in a variety of tumor cells and normal fetal rat, mouse, and human epithelial tissues, little is known about their origin or role in mitotic cells. While several investigators have suggested that CC arise from nuclear envelope (NE) folding back on itself during prophase, others have suggested that CC arise when fragments of NE pair with endoplasmic reticulum. An electron microscopic investigation of 0.25 um thick serial sections was undertaken to examine the origin of CC in HeLa cells.

Human pituitary corticotropins have unique morphologic markers: bundles of type-1 filaments, measuring approximately 70 A in width and representing cytokeratin. The extreme ring-like accumulation of type-1 filaments, known as Crooke's hyalinization, signals functional suppression of the corticotropins and occurs in endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoid excess, caused by ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma, glucocorticoid secreting adrenocortical tumor, ectopic ACTH-syndrome and administration of pharmacologic doses of glucocorticoids. Cells of autonomous corticotroph adenomas usually do not show Crooke's hyalin change. A minority of these tumors, however, retains sensitivity to the negative feed-back effect of elevated blood glucocorticoid levels and display typical Crooke’s change.In the present study pituitary corticotropins in various phases of Crooke's hyalinization were investigated in patients with glucocorticoid excess of various origin, applying histology, immunocytochemistry, count of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR), and transmission electron microscopy.
