Navicula fontana sp. nov., a new freshwater diatom from a limnocrenic spring in Central Poland

A small unidentified species of Navicula was observed in sandy sediments of a Quaternary spring near Lodz in Central Poland. The species was thoroughly analyzed using light (LM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy. It was compared to established species of Navicula from available published sources and its assignment to an established taxon was unsuccessful. Hence, we decided to describe it as a species new for science and the name Navicula fontana sp. nov. is proposed. Navicula fontana sp. nov. was compared to several established species, e.g. N. microdigitoradiata, N. meulemansii, in terms of size dimension range, morphology, ultrastructure, and autecology. Firstly, it differs in terms of autecology living in freshwater, whereas the others thrive in brackish water habitats. Although the type habitat of N. fontana sp. nov. is in a spring, we also observed it in headwaters of rivers with high water quality.

The system “Neue Donau” functions as a control system for high waters of the river Danube and is an important recreational area for many people. Water quality and trophic status of the water body is thereforeof prime importance. The high nutrient concentrations of the river Danube (P-tot 238±41µg/l, N-tot 2.53±0.78 mg/l) reach the system via groundwater seepage. Present conditions in the basin of Neue Donau are,as a result of this nutrient in-flux,eutrophic to hypertrophic. Average values during the summer period have declined from 366 µg/l total phosphorus to 78 µg/l, and from 86 µg/l chlorophyll-a tol7µg/l between the years 1985 and 1988. However, a dam which is planned in the river at Vienna will permanently raise the water level of the river thus increasing the the groundwater flow in the direction to the Neue Donau and therefore the nutrient input which will enhance trophic conditions in the impoundment. Since macrophytes play an important role in one part of the system macrophyte management together with measures along the river are some of the suggested strategies to keep the system Neue Donau at acceptable trophic conditions and good water quality.

AbstractShallow aquifers are vulnerable to natural geogenic processes as well as anthropogenic influences, and this is especially apparent in desert regions. Within arid and hyperarid climates, evaporation is a controlling hydrologic process leads to an important increase in the concentration of dissolved minerals of both surface water and groundwater. In groundwater, this increase is not only dependent on shallow water table depth, but also on the hydraulic properties of sediments present within the unsaturated zone of the aquifer itself. The main objective of this research is to investigate possible mechanisms that might influence water quality changes under seasonal conditions in shallow aquifers situated within the Saharan desert region of Algeria. In this work, we focus on observed changes in hydrogeochemical characteristics, and the possible responsible processes. Under arid conditions, high water mineralization results in hypersaline water or brine solution formation within shallow aquifers. Due to active physico-chemical mechanisms such as Na+/Ca2+ ion exchange, the successive precipitation of calcite, gypsum, mirabilite or blœdite and halite is induced. Biological processes were also observed as prevalent; evidenced by large measured variations in CO2 load concentrations. These processes contributed to an inverse relationship between CO2 and O2 concentrations within the shallow aquifers studied.

A new species, Encyonema oblonga Liu & Xie, is collected during a survey of the freshwater diatom flora of Manghe River, Shanxi, China. The valves of this new species are oblong with rounded apices and have the features typical of Encyonema, including complex areolae. We compare the new species with the most similar taxa, E. leei, E. leei var. sinensis and E. appalachianum and consider that  E. leei var. sinensis is the valid name.  The morphology of E. oblonga is documented with light and scanning electron microscopy.

Based on long-term observations, the assessment of the pollution of the rivers of the Central Caucasus was carried out by comparing the calculated coefficients of the complexity of pollution and the specific combinatorial index of pollution of surface waters, and the quality classes were determined. The results of chemical analysis of the concentration levels of trace impurities (Mo, Pb, Zn, V, Ni, Cr, Mn, Ag) and inorganic nitrogen compounds (NO2 -, NO3 — and NH4 +) in the waters of 13 rivers in two permanent sections of each watercourse were used. The results of calculating the indicators of pollution in the waters of rivers of winter low water and summer high water are presented. The most polluted watercourses and the frequency of pollution in each river are identified, estimated by the values of the specific combinatorial index of water pollution, the coefficient of complexity of pollution, and the class of water quality is presented. The assessment of the most polluted water bodies during the winter low-water period and summer flood is given according to the classification of water quality. According to long-term observations, the features of watercourses and their differences in terms of pollution are presented.

The high water pollution index causes a decrease in water quality so that it can interfere with the health of living things. In order to overcome this, the government has tried to monitor water quality whose results can be known by the community. However, information disclosure and ease of accessing information are felt to be lacking. This study aims to present information about the quality status of river water and its relatively up-to-date and easily accessed by the public online. The storet method is used to determine the status of river water quality with seven parameters: temperature, EC, TDS, pH, DO, BOD and E.coli. The features provided will be explained in the results and discussion presented in several UML diagrams. In order to get results that match user expectations, this system was developed with extreme programming system development methods.

Several year long investigations of the developmental cycle of <i>Microsphaera palczewskii</i> occurring on the leaves of <i>Caragana arborescens</i> in Central Poland are reported. The material was studied with light and scanning electron microscopes. The scanning microscopy micrographs of the clistothecia and appendages presented in this report are the first micrographs of this species.

Non-point source pollution of surface water is a major impediment to meet water quality objectives. Managing such pollution sources in a sustainable way is a key success factor in maintaining high water quality and to prevent eutrophication. Mathematical models are widely used to simulate ecological and water quality interactions in surface waters. Simulation errors may arise due to uncertainties of the structure, input data and the model parameters. In this study, an attempt has been made to estimate the rate constants for nutrient transformations in Kabini River located in Southern part of Karnataka state in India. The experimental results demonstrated both ammonia and nitrite oxidation. In the river water, DO concentration was 5.2 mg/L. After addition of pollutants it reduced to 3.9 mg/L. EC changed from 370 to 550 µS/cm. pH remained almost the same. At 320C, the rate constants for phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, potassium and ammonia were found to be 0.165, 0.21, 0.077, 0.0777 and 0.078/hr respectively. The results obtained clearly specify that the rate constants are concentration and temperature dependent.

Background. Anthropogenic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in aquatic environments poses human and ecological health risks in Nigeria. Objectives . This study determined the concentrations of PCBs in brackish water fish in the River Niger to assess the contamination status of fish consumed by the local population. Methods . The sampled fish species included Drepane africana, Mochokus niloticus, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, Pristipoma jubelini, Vomer septapinis, Pseudotolithus senegalensis, Mugil cephalus, Pseudotolithus elongatus, Sphyraena piscatorum and Lutjanus goreensis, purchased from landing sites. Six fish from each species were sampled, for a total of 60 samples. Twenty-seven (27) PCB congeners, #8, #18 #28, #44, #52, #60, #77, #81, #101, #105, #114, #118, #123, #126, #128, #138, #153, #156, #157, #167, #169, #170, #180, #185, #189, #195, and #206 were screened in the fish samples using standard methods. The PCBs were identified and quantified using gas chromatography (GC) (Hewlett Packard GC 5890 series 11 with electron capture detector). Confirmation was performed using Shimadzu GCMS QP2010. Results. The sum of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Agency (ΣNOAA) PCBs occurred at the highest concentration of 1830.0±484.0 μg/kg detected in Vomer septapinis, and the lowest in Pseudotolithus senegalensis, with a mean concentration of 795±169.3 μg/kg. The concentration of dioxin-like (DL) PCBs was highest in Pristipoma jubelini (992.0±88.6 μg/kg) and lowest (285.6±81.5 μg/kg) in Drepane africana. The highest mean concentration (418.±177.6 μg/kg) of International Council for the Exploration of the Seas-7 (ICES-7) PCBs was observed in Vomer septapinis. The heavier ICES-7 congeners PCB-138, PCB-153, and PCB-180 occurred at higher concentrations compared to the lighter molecular weight ICES-7: PCB-28, PCB-52, and PCB-101. The European Union (EU) marker PCB limit of 335 μg/kg was exceeded in all the brackish water fishes with the exception of Mochokus niloticus, Pristipoma jubelini and Pseudotolithus senegalensis. Discussion . The total level of PCBs in the brackish fish samples was relatively high at &gt;1000 μg/kg (above the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) guideline of 1000 μg/kg fresh weight). The EU guideline value for fish (220 μg/kg fresh weight) was exceeded in about 80% of the brackish fish samples studied. Conclusions. Consumption of fish from the River Niger may expose humans to polychlorinated biphenyls. In addition, since contamination of the fish samples is an indication of river contamination, river water quality is of great concern and there is a need for additional PCB data on water quality to be distributed to the community, followed by mitigation measures.
