New and interesting species of Agaricomycetes from Panama

Panama forms part of the Central American biodiversity hotspot, one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the world. While plants are relatively well studied in Panama, the documentation of fungal diversity is still in a pioneer phase. In this publication, four species of Agaricomycetes recently collected in Panama are described as new to science, two in Agaricales, namely Gliophorus roseus and Humidicutis roseorubra, a lichenised species in Cantharellales, called Multiclavula caput-serpentis, and a species in Gomphales, called Gloeocantharellus salmonicolor. These species are described and illustrated. Their phylogenetic affinities are discussed based on morphological characters and molecular phylogenies. Further six species of Agaricales, which have not been reported from Panama before, are presented as new records for the country, along with data on their morphology, ecology and taxonomy.

Here, we describe four new species of Crellidae Dendy, 1922 and discuss characters and relationships from published molecular phylogenies including crellid sponges. New species proposed are Crella (Pytheas) chiloensis Fernandez, Gastaldi, Pardo & Hajdu, sp. nov., from southern Chile (15 m depth), C. (P.) desventuradae Fernandez, Gastaldi, Zapata-Hernández & Hajdu, sp. nov., from Desventuradas Archipelago (10–20 m depth), Crella (P.) santacruzae Fernandez, Gastaldi, Thompson & Hajdu, sp. nov., from deep waters off Argentina (750 m depth) and Crellomima sigmatifera Fernandez, Gastaldi & Hajdu, sp. nov., from the Chilean fjords region (ca. 20 m depth). These new species are set apart from each other and from known species mainly due to aspects of their spiculation. Chelae microscleres and acanthostyles supply characters that might be used to infer phylogenetic relationships and to verify the monophyly of Crella Gray, 1867 and Crellidae, which has seemingly been contradicted by preliminary molecular data available in the systematics’ literature. Our own interpretation of phylogenetic affinities, in the light of morphological characters from previous taxonomic studies, argues for a classification reassessment of materials (vouchers) included in these molecular phylogenies, especially in the case of Crella incrustans (Carter, 1885). We argue that currently available molecular phylogenetic outcomes for crellid sponges are not supportive of the polyphyly of Crella and Crellidae.

This is the first in a series of reports describing new records caught with circle hooks, a method only now being employed in exploratory fishing in Brazilian deep waters. Several new records of deep-water fishes were obtained with this equipment. In this paper we record for the first time the occurrence of two genera and species of Bramidae in Brazilian waters: the tropical pomfret Eumegistus brevorti and the keeltail pomfret Taractes rubescens. We also report on previously unnoticed collection records from preserved specimens of Pterycombus brama in museum collections, and the first capture of an adult bigscale pomfret Taractichthys longipinnis in Brazil. These new records increase the number of bramid species known from Brazilian waters to ten. The addition of P. brama to the Brazilian Bramidae makes the Southwestern Atlantic the only known area of the world where two species of Pterycombus are found together. Meristic, biometric, and new biological data are presented for Eumegistus brevorti. Some species of bramids are rather rare and even if well described in the literature there are morphological characters and behavioral aspects yet to be added. Herein we present detailed descriptions of some bramid species to add to their published descriptions. A key to the Western Atlantic Bramidae is provided.

Tetillidae is a sponge family distributed all over the world but with some genera apparently endemic from the Antarctic and Subantarctic (the “Antarctic clade”). Species identification results tricky due to the similarities of their morphological characters. However, molecular phylogenies have helped to resolve the family taxonomy. The last phylogenetic study on Tetillidae suggested the creation of two new genera: Levantiniella and Antarctotetilla. Lenvantiniella, from Middle East Mediterranean Sea, was previously classified within Cinachyrella, from which it differs in the small rounded surface cavities, distinctive from true porocalices. Antarctotetilla has up to now an Antarctic distribution, and harbors species wrongly classified within Tethya, Craniella, or Tetilla. The main differences of Antarctotetilla to other Tetillidae genera are the presence of pores grouped in small areas, and a poorly-defined cortex (pseudocortex). This study aims to re-describe in detail the species of Tetillidae that belong in the two above mentioned new genera, and to highlight that molecular phylogenies should be combined with morphological analyses to improve taxonomical decisions. We also describe a new Tetillidae species with a hair-like hispidation, which we name Antarctotetilla pilosa nov. sp. Furthermore, the types of Tethya coactifera and T. crassispicula (Lendenfeld, 1907) were reexamined because of some morphological similarities with Antarctotetilla. The minibarcode sequences (a small COI fragment) placed them within the Antarctic clade harboring Antarctotetilla and Cinachyra, but did not resolve their genus position. A morphological revision, however, suggests placing T. coactifera in Antarctotetilla, while T. crassispicula, which owns porocalices and a spicule-reinforced cortex, appeared to belong in Cinachyra.

Thirteen species of the genus Labidocera Lubbock, 1853 were identified. Plankton samples collected from nine sites around coastal areas of Indonesia from 2003 to 2015. Among these species, there were three recently described species, Labidocera javaensis Mulyadi, 1997, L. muranoi Mulyadi, 1997, and L. kaimanaensis Mulyadi, 2014, three new records, L. bengalensis Krishnaswamy, 1952, L. pavo Giesbrecht, 1889 and L. sinilobata Shen & Lee, 1963, and seven previously recorded species from Indonesian waters. These species divided into five species-groups, detruncata-, kroyeri-, minuta-, pectinata- and an unassigned group, based on its morphological characters. The Labidocera detruncata-group includes the following species: L. bataviae A. Scott, 1909, L. detruncata (Dana, 1849), L. kaimanaensis Mulyadi, 2014, L. madurae A. Scott, 1909, L. pavo Giesbrecht, 1889, and L. sinilobata Shen & Lee, 1963. The Labidocera kroyeri-group includes L. kroyeri (Brady, 1883) and L. muranoi Mulyadi, 1997. The Labidocera minuta-group includes L. bengalensis Krishnaswamy, 1952 and L. minuta Giesbrecht, 1889. The Labidocera pectinata-group includes L. javaensis Mulyadi, 1997, L. papuensis Fleminger et al. 1982, and L. rotunda Mori, 1929. The unassigned group includes L. acuta (Dana, 1849) and L. laevidentata (Brady, 1883). Since the descriptions of these species groups and also species as yet unassigned to groups were often not given in sufficient detail, we provide re-descriptions of their species groups and their zoogeography in Indonesian waters, adjacent waters, and the world oceans

Wetland conservation is aimed at protecting and preserving areas where water exists (e.g., swamps, marshes, blogs, etc.). These wetlands make up 6% of the Earth's surface. Freshwater wetlands are utilised for cultivation of paddy, for basic water needs, for fishing, as a source of food by habitat loss, one main reason being anthropogenic activities. Wetland ecosystems are a home to birds and aquatic fauna. They are the breeding and nursing grounds for these species. They are the most productive ecosystem on Earth. Apart from this, wetlands are important as they reduce the impact of floods, control pollution, and also regulate climate. On our planet, there are regions that have large number of endemic species. Most of these are heavily threatened biodiversity hotspots. Thirty-five such regions have been identified in the world. Conservation strategies need to be framed and implemented in a very effective way and with no further wastage of time before the wetlands and hotspots disappear completely.

The Myxomycetes comprise a remarkably diverse group of organisms within Amoebozoa, with over 1000 species currently recognized. These organisms, at the end of their life cycles produce fruiting bodies which are the basis for their systematics. Despite being a biodiversity hotspot, the tropical Andes has a myxobiota that remains barely explored so far. In this study, we report the occurrence of three species inhabiting the highlands of the Peruvian Andes between 3000–5000 m.a.s.l. Arcyodes incarnata and Trichia mirabilis are reported for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere and the Neotropics, respectively, while Metatrichia floripara represents the third record in the world, previously only known from Rwanda and Brazil. Fruiting bodies of T. mirabilis were detected as already developed in the field, while the previous reports only included moist chamber culture-derived specimens. These results notably enlarge the geographical distribution of these species and highlight the interest of the tropical Andes, which remains a challenging region to explore and determine its whole myxobiota.

Talaromyces is a monophyletic genus containing seven sections. The number of species in Talaromyces grows rapidly due to reliable and complete sequence data contributed from all over the world. In this study agricultural soil samples from Fujiang, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Shandong, Tibet and Zhejiang provinces of China were collected and analyzed for fungal diversity. Based on a polyphasic approach including phylogenetic analysis of partial ITS, BenA, CaM and RPB2 gene sequences, macro- and micro-morphological analyses, six of them could not be assigned to any described species, and one cannot be assigned to any known sections. Morphological characters as well as their phylogenetic relationship with other Talaromyces species are presented for these putative new species. Penicillium resedanum is combined in Talaromyces section Subinflati as T. resedanus.

This paper is the next one in the series of publications devoted to fungal diversity of the Tula Region. The checklist contains data on 94 species and includes data on location, habitat, substrate and voucher specimen number. 85 species are recorded for the first time for the Tula Region. The record of Otidea flavidobrunneola is the first for Russia.

Jurasaidae are a family of neotenic elateroid beetles which was described recently from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot based on three species in two genera. All life stages live in the soil, including the larviform females, and only adult males are able to fly. Here, we report the discovery of two new species, Jurasai miraculum sp. nov. and J. vanini sp. nov., and a new, morphologically remarkable population of J. digitusdei Rosa et al., 2020. Our discovery sheds further light on the diversity and biogeography of the group. Most species of Jurasaidae are known from the rainforest remnants of the Atlantic Forest, but here for the first time we report a jurasaid species from the relatively drier Atlantic Forest/Caatinga transitional zone. Considering our recent findings, minute body size and cryptic lifestyle of all jurasaids, together with potentially high numbers of yet undescribed species of this family from the Atlantic Forest and possibly also other surrounding ecoregions, we call for both field research in potentially suitable localities as well as for a detailed investigation of a massive amount of already collected but still unprocessed materials deposited in a number of Brazilian institutes, laboratories and collections.

AbstractKristianstads Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve [KVBR] is a UNESCO designated area of Sweden possessing high biological value. Although several studies on tardigrades inhabiting Sweden have been performed, the KVBR area has been neglected. The current study investigates the tardigrade fauna of five areas of the biosphere reserve and includes 34 samples of different substrates analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. In total, 33 species of tardigrades were found in the samples, including 22 new records for the Skåne region, 15 new records for Sweden, and four species new to science. Mesobiotus emiliae sp. nov., Xerobiotus gretae sp. nov., Itaquascon magnussoni sp. nov., and Thulinius gustavi sp. nov. were described with an integrative approach (when possible) using morphological characters (light, electron scanning, and confocal laser scanning microscopies) and molecular markers (ITS2, 18S, 28S, cox1). A new protocol to increase morphological data was developed recovering mounted specimens within old slides for SEM analysis. Emended diagnoses for the genus Itaquascon and the transfer of Platicrista itaquasconoide to the genus Meplitumen are proposed. This study enriches the knowledge of the tardigrade biodiversity both within the KVBR and in Sweden and contributes to the rapidly increasing number of tardigrade species reported worldwide. The 33 species identified in the KVBR area represents 28% of all water bear species found in Sweden so far. The restricted study areas and limited number of samples collected suggests that the KVBR is very rich of tardigrades.
