Alpheus praecox Herrick, 1888, previously regarded as nomen nudum, nomen dubium or a possible senior synonym of Synalpheus brevicarpus (Herrick, 1891), is shown to be a senior synonym of Synalpheus pectiniger Coutière, 1909. However, because A. praecox has not been used as a valid name since 1899, whereas S. pectiniger on the other hand appeared as valid species in at least 29 publications signed by numerous authors, A. praecox is herewith designated nomen oblitum, with S. pectiniger becoming nomen protectum.

The genus Epicadinus Simon, 1895 can easily be distinguished from the other Neotropical Stephanopines by their abundant and robust setiferous tubercles, topped by elongated macrosetae, which cover most of the tegument. Additionally, the genus can be recognized by a pair of conical ocular mounds above the ALE, the anterior eye row very recurved, posterior one slightly procurved; carapace flattened and without tubercles, and opisthosoma with three conical projections (“tubercles”) of variable size and shape. This work is a taxonomic review of the 12 valid species of Epicadinus as listed in version 19 of the World Spider Catalogue (2018), whose hitherto known distribution included few records from Brazil, French Guiana, Bolivia and Peru, and only one from Mexico. Four valid species are recognized: Epicadinus biocellatus Mello-Leitão, 1929; E. trispinosus (Taczanowski, 1872) [with two junior synonyms E. trifidus (Pickard-Cambridge, 1893) syn. nov. and E. cornutus (Taczanowski, 1872) syn. nov.]; E. spinipes (Blackwall, 1862) [with two junior synonyms E. albimaculatus Mello-Leitão, 1929 syn. nov. and E. gavensis Soares, 1946 syn. nov]; and E. villosus [with two junior synonyms E. helenae Piza, 1936 syn. nov. and E. marmoratus Mello-Leitão, 1947 syn. nov.]. Epicadinus polyophthalmus Mello-Leitão, 1929 and Epicadinus tuberculatus Petrunkevitch, 1910 are transferred to Epicadus. Epicadus polyophthalmus (Mello-Leitão, 1929) comb. nov. is considered a nomen dubium. Epicadus tuberculatus (Petrunkevitch, 1910) comb. nov. is a senior synonym of Epicadus pustulosus (Mello-Leitão, 1929) syn. nov.

AbstractOigolaimella kruegeri n. sp. and Oigolaimella ninae n. sp. are described. Oigolaimella kruegeri n. sp. males can be recognised by the lack of the gubernacular keel characteristic of other Oigolaimella species and by the modified distribution pattern of the genital sensillae. Oigolaimella ninae n. sp. can be recognised and distinguished from the other members of the genus by the refractive cuticularised ring formed by the anterior edge of the cheilostomatal collar. Oigolaimella longicauda (Claus, 1862) n. comb. is accepted as a valid species, regarded as a senior synonym of O. agilis (Skwarra, 1921) and redescribed. Oigolaimella diplogaster (von Linstow, 1890) n. comb. is proposed. The phylogenetic relationship of Oigolaimella is discussed and an ecological characterisation of the taxon given on the basis of observations on feeding behaviour and locomotion in the habitat.

We present a review of distribution and new synonymy of the 63 valid species of biting midges in the genus Dasyhelea occurring in Europe. New distribution records, mostly from Ukraine and Romania, are provided. Dasyhelea alonensis (Strobl), D. mayor (Strobl), D. decoratissima (Strobl) and D. bilineata Goetghebuer are redescribed and interpreted. Seventeen NEW SYNONYMS are proposed for the following species: Dasyhelea modesta Winnertz (= D. inclusa Kieffer), D. mayor (Strobl) (= D. aperta Goetghebuer & Timon David, D. wuelkeri Mayer), D. bilobata Kieffer (= D. luteiventris Goetghebuer, D. spiralis Remm), D. bilineata Goetghebuer (= D. insignipalpis Kieffer, Tetraphora saxicola Edwards, D. geleiana Zilahi-Sebess, D. montana Zilahi-Sebess, D. lithotelmatica Strenzke, D. tecticola Remmert, Culicoides dieuzeidei Vaillant, D. karelica Glukhova & Brodskaya), D. dampfi Kieffer (= D. estonica Kieffer), D. turficola Kieffer (= D. malibui Yu), D. turanicola Remm & Nazarmukhamedov (= D. serrata Navai), D. corinneae Gosseries (= D. chonetus Yu & Zou). Dasyhelea furva Remm is removed from synonymy with D. bifida Zilahi-Sebess and D. alonensis (Strobl) removed from synonymy with D. flavoscutellata (Zetterstedt). Ceratopogon aristolochiae Rondani is transferred from the genus Dasyhelea to the genus Forcipomyia (comb. nov.) and recognized as a new senior synonym of Forcipomyia brevicubita Goetghebuer and F. pontica Remm (syn. nov.). Lectotypes are designated for Dasyhelea alonensis (Strobl), D. mayor (Strobl), D. decoratissima (Strobl) and Forcipomyia aristolochiae (Rondani). Dasyhelea longituba Kieffer, D. strigosa Kieffer, D. neobifurcata Wirth and D. paragrata Remm are excluded from the European fauna. In addition, we provide a list of 17 doubtful species (nomina dubia) described from Europe and one nomen nudum.

Late Osagean to Meramecian Platycrinites and Eucladocrinus from Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri are redescribed and redefined from study of type material. Three of the oldest species were incorrectly synonymized with P. sarae, and this correction leads to a realignment of species systematics within Platycrinites. Accordingly, six species of Platycrinites and one species of Eucladocrinus are considered valid in the Keokuk Limestone through St. Louis Limestone of the stratotype area. Valid species include Platycrinites saffordi (Hall), P. sarae (Hall), P. georgii (Hall), P. pumilus (Hall), P. brevinodus (Hall), P. niotensis (Meek and Worthen), and Eucladocrinus millebrachiatus Wahsmuth and Springer. Nomenclatoral changes include the following: 1) P. sarae is redescribed and all junior synonyms are removed; 2) P. georgii is a valid senior synonym of P. bonoensis (White), P. aeternalis (Miller), P. boonvillensis (Miller), and P. cauducus; 3) P. pentagonus (Miller) is a junior synonym of P. niotensis; 4) P. pumilus is a valid senior synonym of P. prattenanus (Meek and Worthen), and P. monroensis (Worthen); 5) P. bloomfieldensis (Miller) is designated as a nomen dubium; and 6) Eucladocrinus millebrachiatus immaturus is a junior synonym of E. millebrachiatus.The evoluton of new species in Platycrinites was by a combination of cladogenesis and possibly anagenesis. Platycrinites sarae evolved from P. saffordi possibly through anagenesis, P. pumilus evolved from P. niotensis through cladogenesis, and P. hemisphaericus evolved through cladogenesis from P. brevinodus, although P. hemisphaericus does not occur in the geographic area of this study.

The family-group names Priscansermarinidae Newman, 1996, Zeugmatolepadidae Newman, 1996, and Neolepadinae Newman, 1996 were not accompanied by a description or definition when proposed, whereby, in light of Article 13.1.1 (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999), they are nomen nudum (Grygier in lit.). It is the purpose of this note to rectify this situation. To my knowledge the first two family-group names have not appeared in print since 1996 and therefore they are proposed anew herein, as Priscansermarinidae fam. nov. and Zeugmatolepadidae fam. nov. The third family-group, the subfamily Neolepadinae Newman, 1996, has since been recognized and variously defined by subsequent authors, including Buckeridge (2000) and Southward & Jones (2004), but since neither declare it a new taxon, in light of Article 16.1 it cannot be attributed to them. On the other hand, Yamaguchi et al. (2004) divided the included genera between two new family-groups, the tribes Neolepadini and Ashinkailepadini Yamaguchi, Newman & Hashimoto, 2004. Therefore, in accordance with Art. 36.1 (the Principle of Coordination), the Neolepadinae Yamaguchi, Newman & Hashimoto, 2004, as defined by Yamaguchi et al. (2004:111), is proposed, nom. trans., herein.

AbstractWe have developed a model for theH2OandOHevolution in a comet outburst, assuming that together with the gas, a distribution of icy grains is ejected. With an initial mass of icy grains of 108kg released, theH2OandOHproductions are increased up to a factor two, and the growth curves change drastically in the first two days. The model is applied to eruptions detected in theOHradio monitorings and fits well with the slow variations in the flux. On the other hand, several events of short duration appear, consisting of a sudden rise ofOHflux, followed by a sudden decay on the second day. These apparent short bursts are frequently found as precursors of a more durable eruption. We suggest that both of them are part of a unique eruption, and that the sudden decay is due to collisions that de-excite theOHmaser, when it reaches the Cometopause region located at 1.35 × 105kmfrom the nucleus.

We have become accustomed to differentiating between the scanning microscope and the conventional transmission microscope according to the resolving power which the two instruments offer. The conventional microscope is capable of a point resolution of a few angstroms and line resolutions of periodic objects of about 1Å. On the other hand, the scanning microscope, in its normal form, is not ordinarily capable of a point resolution better than 100Å. Upon examining reasons for the 100Å limitation, it becomes clear that this is based more on tradition than reason, and in particular, it is a condition imposed upon the microscope by adherence to thermal sources of electrons.

Life beyond 1MeV – like life after 40 – is not too different unless one takes advantage of past experience and is receptive to new opportunities. At first glance, the returns on performing electron microscopy at voltages greater than 1MeV diminish rather rapidly as the curves which describe the well-known advantages of HVEM often tend towards saturation. However, in a country with a significant HVEM capability, a good case can be made for investing in instruments with a range of maximum accelerating voltages. In this regard, the 1.5MeV KRATOS HVEM being installed in Berkeley will complement the other 650KeV, 1MeV, and 1.2MeV instruments currently operating in the U.S. One other consideration suggests that 1.5MeV is an optimum voltage machine – Its additional advantages may be purchased for not much more than a 1MeV instrument. On the other hand, the 3MeV HVEM's which seem to be operated at 2MeV maximum, are much more expensive.

Summary: My comment is basically restricted to the situation in which less-able students find themselves and refers only to literature in German. From this point of view I am basically able to confirm Marsh's results. It must, however, be said that with less-able pupils the opposite effect can be found: Levels of self-esteem in these pupils are raised, at least temporarily, by separate instruction, academic performance however drops; combined instruction, on the other hand, leads to improved academic performance, while levels of self-esteem drop. Apparently, the positive self-image of less-able pupils who receive separate instruction does not bring about the potential enhancement of academic performance one might expect from high-ability pupils receiving separate instruction. To resolve the dilemma, it is proposed that individual progress in learning be accentuated, and that comparisons with others be dispensed with. This fosters a self-image that can in equal measure be realistic and optimistic.

Abstract. Two experiments examined the influence of stories on recipients’ self-perceptions. Extending prior theory and research, our focus was on assimilation effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in line with a protagonist’s traits) as well as on contrast effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in contrast to a protagonist’s traits). In Experiment 1 ( N = 113), implicit and explicit conscientiousness were assessed after participants read a story about either a diligent or a negligent student. Moderation analyses showed that highly transported participants and participants with lower counterarguing scores assimilate the depicted traits of a story protagonist, as indicated by explicit, self-reported conscientiousness ratings. Participants, who were more critical toward a story (i.e., higher counterarguing) and with a lower degree of transportation, showed contrast effects. In Experiment 2 ( N = 103), we manipulated transportation and counterarguing, but we could not identify an effect on participants’ self-ascribed level of conscientiousness. A mini meta-analysis across both experiments revealed significant positive overall associations between transportation and counterarguing on the one hand and story-consistent self-reported conscientiousness on the other hand.
