When Boundaries Around the “Secret” are Tested: A School Community Response to the Policing of Undocumented Immigrants

This case study focuses on a 2008 incident where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) vans appeared near a K-5 elementary school. It was the first time school personnel experienced the impact of federal immigration agents policing illegality in their school community, and the event set off a chain of decision-making choices as to how personnel would respond. This article specifically explores how educators’ roles within a school shaped their access to information and subsequent sensemaking about ICE, asking two questions: (a) How does one’s position within a school shape a person’s sensemaking if a situation necessitates in-the-moment policy making? and (b) How might prior knowledge and professional position affect the information one accesses, shares, and uses in the policy-making process? Evidence comes from interviews with 14 personnel who reflected on the event, and shows that Aurora staff quickly established a policy and protocol within a few days to keep the school environment a safe space. The findings demonstrate that the school principal was a key “sensemaker” for other personnel. Ultimately, the school created its first school policy and protocol to ensure the school was a safe space for undocumented students, fusing a familiar school policy with new policy.

Bullying is an unpleasant act that is still a problem in the school environment. To find out about school policy innovations in an effort to reduce the impact of bullying behavior, this will illustrate the relationship between bullying perpetrators and victims of bullying in SMA as well as school policy innovations to reduce the impact of bullying. This research was conducted in high school students of all levels with the number of respondents 1119 students in Indonesia. Descriptive approach with mixed methods. The sample / respondent was determined by purposive sampling technique. The data used a questionnaire and were analyzed with proportions and conducted FGD and interviews with teachers in SMA. The results of the study concluded that: 1) The value of r-count (Pearson Correlations) of the bullying was 0.186 r-table 0.062 and the r-count value for the bullying victim aspect was 0.139 r-table 0.062, meaning that the relationship between the two variables was positive and increased the bullying and victims of bullying, there will also be increased assistance and support from parents, teachers and friends; 2) The solution to reduce bullying effects must implement policies at the macro, meso and micro levels that work systemically and in synergy by creating creative and innovative programs. With the existence of an effective and innovative school policy, bullying cases that occur in schools can be minimized in terms of quality and quantity.

The study aimed to explore the effects of a proposed gamification strategy in eLearning environments through integrating roles of school community members (school principal, educational supervisor, teacher, student, and parent) in order to improve their levels of participation in eLearning. A mixed methods research approach was used: Quantitative data were collected by means of a questionnaire distributed to a sample of 41 faculty members specializing in educational technology in Saudi public universities, while qualitative data were collected through interviews with eight experts in the same field. The results showed that all factors had a medium impact, except for the impact of student performance on teacher performance, which showed the highest average impact, and the impact of student performance on the performance of the school principal, which showed the lowest average impact. Additionally, the results of the interviews were discussed as interpretation of the quantitative data, which confirmed—from the points of view of both the experts and the questionnaire recipients—the effectiveness of the proposed gamification strategy in improving the level of participation of all school community members. Based on the results, the study recommended the use of the proposed gamification strategy.

This article aims to 1) To find out how the process of implementing principal management in increasing educational quality at SMP BP Amanatul Ummah. 2) Knowing what are the supporting and inhibiting factors of the principal management process in improving the quality of education at SMP BP Amanatul Ummah. 3) Knowing the principal management process on the quality of professional education at SMP BP Amanatul Ummah Pacet Mojokerto. This research is qualitative research using descriptive methods, namely research methods to solve actual problems. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The management of school principals in order to increase education output at SMP BP Amanatul Ummah the program carried out is to increase the ability of school personnel in resource management and program preparation, encouraging greater community participation to support education in schools, encouraging the use of school budgets according to school needs. functions are implemented by taking four stages, namely: planning, organizing, implementing and supervising. From the results of research and data obtained from the implementation of school principal management, the impact of the implementation of BP Amanatul Ummah Junior High School education, especially the achievement of students, shows high achievement both academic and non-academic achievements. In implementing principal management, it is inseparable from supporting and inhibiting factors, to anticipate inhibiting factors a solution is needed to overcome them.

This study is aimed at promoting school environment to teaching practice for enterpreneurship.  Home industries are promoted for teaching practice objects.  The study used School Action Research whose objectives are to review and evaluate school policy. Subjects of the study were 69 students of grade IX at SMPN 8 Bontang and 18 teachers three of them are science teachers. The study was conducted in January to February 2014.  The findings of the study referred to UNESCO Pillars in education: learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together in peace and harmony.  Products of the study that is “terasi” was processed by students through discovery and problem based project learning starting from finding information (learning to know), trying to make on suervisory, making by themselves (learning to be), and sale the product with school community (learning to live together).  The finding probes that PAIKEM is applicable and environment is worth for teaching sources.

Purpose: If Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) takes place in a community near school property, maintaining a school environment conducive to learning can be difficult. This article examines (a) how a school leader and personnel perceived the impact that ICE activity in their community had on students and families and (b) whether school personnel incorporated community concerns in their response, and if they exhibited an “ethic of community.” Research Methods/Approach: Data come from an embedded case study of 14 educators in a school that experienced ICE activity close to school grounds in 2008. Findings: The principal and other school personnel tried to minimize the impact that uncertainty over ICE’s presence in the neighborhood could have on the school environment, and took steps to limit the short-term and long-term effects on the community. Personnel demonstrated that prioritizing relationships, dialogue, and collaboration with undocumented community members was central to their decision-making process. Implications for Research and Practice: School leaders and practitioners may not know their legal and/or ethical responsibilities toward undocumented students—or anticipate contexts related to the legal status of students’ family members. This article highlights the need for schools and school districts to create policies and resources to protect undocumented students’ educational rights and ensure that personnel receive training on those policies. Research can expand understanding of how personnel respond to the sensitive personal and legal contexts involving undocumented families.

This paper is based on a qualitative case study examining the impact of social context on school-community partnerships. Sixty-four students and school personnel at one K-12 magnet school in southern California participated in 21 open-ended, 45-minute interviews. Observations were conducted, and documents were collected. Structural, cultural and agentive issues impacted partnership establishment. Teachers and the principal valued a school culture was conducive to community involvement. They collectively developed the school’s mission and vision with a focus on global citizenship, and initiated partnerships consistent with the vision. The stages of the partnership development process are discussed, and it is argued that they are broadly applicable to the establishment of collaborative activities. Funding and networks contributed to the professional development, resources and technology needed to support partnering. Findings extend research by identifying the educators’ leadership roles in partnering, and the structures and cultures that facilitate it.

This article presents a practical and collegial model of problem solving that is based upon the literature in supervision and cognitive learning theory. The model and the procedures it generates are applied directly to supervisory interactions in the public school environment. Specific principles of supervision and related recommendations for collaborative problem solving are discussed. Implications for public school supervision are addressed in terms of continued professional growth of both supervisees and supervisors, interdisciplinary team functioning, and renewal and retention of public school personnel.
