The qualitative case study explores the effect of cost-sharing policy on the dropout rates of students in public secondary schools in the Limuru district, Kenya. Interviews were conducted with students who returned to school after they had raised money for tuition, teachers serving on the school district committee and the head teachers. The cost-sharing policy was viewed as a burden that has increased dropout, repetition and absenteeism in schools. Children from poor backgrounds continue to be marginalised as some national schools charge exorbitant school fees. Based on the findings the study offers some recommendations for policy-makers to consider.

Structure sense can be interpreted as an intuitive ability towards symbolic expressions, including skills to perceive, to interpret, and to manipulate symbols in different roles. This ability shows student algebraic proficiency in dealing with various symbolic expressions and is considered important to be mastered by secondary school students for advanced study or professional work. This study, therefore, aims to investigate students’ algebraic proficiency in terms of structure sense. To reach this aim, we set up a qualitative case study with the following three steps. First, after conducting a literature study, we designed structure sense tasks according to structure sense characteristics for the topic of equations. Second, we administered an individual written test involving 28 grade XI students (16-17 year-old). Third, we analyzed students’ written work using a structure sense perspective. The results showed that about two-thirds of the participated students lack of structure sense in which they tend to use more procedural strategies than structure sense strategies in solving equations. We conclude that the perspective of structure sense provides a fruitful lens for assessing students’ algebraic proficiency.

Over the years that I have taken secondary school students to the theatre, the the digital revolution has moved through schools, classrooms, and even theatres, calling into question my goal of contributing positively to students’ identity formation through exposure to live plays. Responding to calls to examine the ways in which young people’s online and offline lives are interwoven, a one-year qualitative case study of student theatregoers suggests that online settings feature prominently in students’ identity formation and that non-digital school experiences such as the theatre trip are often experienced in light of students’ digital lives. Traditional events such as a trip to the theatre are influenced by and combined with online experiences to contribute to a new “iDentity” formation.

This study examined the nexus between the public secondary school teacher and his/her work environment. To capture the nature and substance of this nexus, the study was mainly directed towards answering the following two research questions: Which attributes of work environment matter most to the public secondary school teacher? And why do they matter? The study was conducted on teachers in public secondary schools of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It adopted a qualitative case study design where data were collected through semi-structured interviews and then analyzed using a thematic analysis technique. The results show that basic school facilities, teacher-principal and teacher-student in-school inter-personal relations, financial and non-financial rewards, and the praxis of politics in a school setting are the attributes of the work environment that matter most to the study participants. Results also show that these attributes of work environment appeared as attributes of work environment with utmost importance to the teacher for they happened to be the basis of the teacher’s work motivation, job satisfaction, and work engagement. Findings further showed that the attributes of the work environment and the emergent causal consequences have both direct and indirect relationships. This study is expected to have empirical, methodological, and theoretical implications.

This qualitative case study explores the factors behind Tahfiz secondary school students’ motivation to undertake the challenging task of memorizing the Qur’an and the challenges they experienced. The participants were six (6) Tahfiz students (three boys and three girls), aged between 15 and 17, who were enrolled in the Tahfiz Al-Qur’an program in two public secondary schools in Gombak and Bangi. The participants were selected by their teachers through purposeful sampling and had been engaged in Qur’an memorization for at least 2 years at the onset of the study.  In-depth, semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted to examine their views about the factors that motivated them to memorize the Qur’an and the difficulties they faced. The findings pointed to three distinct categories of motivating factors: the students themselves, teachers and parents. In particular, parental guidance and advice were the most influential elements in students’ motivation to memorize the Qur’an. Among the challenges faced were time constraint, inability to remember verses, strict disciplinary rules and external noise that made the memorizing task difficult. In general, this study has shown the instrumental role of motivation in influencing Tahfiz students' memorization of the Qur’an.

In the world of K–12 education, the growing numbers of dropouts are a major concern. This article examines the dropout rates of Chinese and Vietnamese high school students. Using logistic regression analysis, this article examines the influence of ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status (SES) on dropout rates. The distinct contribution of this analysis lies within the intraethnic comparisons within the Asian American student population and its use of longitudinal data. The results of the study support existing research that gender and SES are related to dropout rates. Moreover, an interesting interaction between ethnicity and SES exists.

Project-based learning (PBL) has been thoroughly integrated in university sustainable development curricula, but has not been well-established in curricula used at pre-university educational levels. Integrating real-world settings into the teaching of secondary school students can help to promote problem-solving skills and competencies at younger ages, which is a crucial task in sustainability education. Therefore, in this article we describe the results of a case study on the development of sustainable food products that involved a university and two secondary schools in Austria. The methods used in this case study were drawn from the transdisciplinary case study (TCS) and the PBL literature. Data were collected by carrying out participatory research methods such as photovoice, focus group discussions, food diaries, student evaluations, and surveys. We divided the study design into three phases: (1) exploration, (2) product ideation, and (3) product prototyping and optimisation. The case study illustrates that the use of PBL research approaches by students at different levels of education provides promising results, if the research process is clearly structured and managed. When a demand for learning is encountered by students, secondary school teachers and university researchers must provide the students with additional sources of information. The establishment and management of a transinstitutional research setting is a promising, yet time-consuming endeavour.

The aim of this study is to show how the perceptions and attitudes of secondary school students towards mental health issues changed over the course of a Learning and Service project. The Learning and Service project was carried out by 58 students, together with the residents of a mental health institution during three months. Both students and residents shared several activities to bring them closer. Secondary school students did not have any previous experience with mental health residents before. The analysis took place during the course of the process, with the students responding to four questionnaires, each one after having done an activity together. The study demonstrates that through this Learning and Service project most of the students' perspectives changed for the better, some even viewed radical change while others were positive and finally few students only experienced neutral evolution of their ideas with respect to people with mental health disorders.
