Nowadays, there are several methods to obtain simulation models for foams which consider important microstructural features. This research study presents a method to obtain low density foam models directly from computed tomography (CT) data. Finite element meshes are created from CT measurement results of a polypropylene extrusion foam with two different densities. Sensitivity studies with regard to the tension behaviour are performed with the microstructural models. The study shows that the tension behaviour highly depends on the examined area of the foam because the microstructure and density vary through the foam. Furthermore, the simulation results are validated with experimental results. The validation shows that the tension behaviour of the investigated foams characterised by the simulation approach is in good agreement with the experimentally observed behaviour and that specific microstructural characteristics (e.g. anisotropic cell shapes) are captured in the model.

In this research study, a methodology is introduced for generating finite element simulation models for low density closed cell foams based on computed tomography (CT) measurement results. Creating this kind of simulation models can be very expensive with regard to modelling and computational effort. Hence, a combined modelling technique based on CT data and Voronoi diagrams is developed that minimizes this effort, but nevertheless, generates simulation models with a realistic microstructure. In this article, the generation of simulation models using this modelling method and the necessary adaptation of the models concerning microstructural features to consider, for example, anisotropic properties of the foam, are described. Furthermore, simulations are performed to investigate the mechanical performance of the foam models and to compare the results with several analytical models and experimental data. Finally, conclusions regarding the applicability and possible further extensions of the model are provided.

Customer expectations in terms of products quality are constantly growing. Therefore, to control only dimensions is not enough; it is necessary to check also the form deviation or roughness. The vast majority of measurement nowadays is carried out by different coordinate measuring devices. Measuring computed tomography is the newest field of coordinate measuring technique, which makes many aspects of its accuracy and possible applications still open. The paper presents the measurement results of elements with different values of roundness deviations. Examined samples were checked on a formtester and computed tomography. For CT measurement, different strategies to verify the influence on received results were used. The ability to measure form deviations on CT allows to verify the quality of hard to reach part areas, but also a comprehensive assessment of geometry, e.g. parts made of plastic and measured on CT.

SummaryHuman plasma lipoprotein fractions were prepared by flotation in the ultracentrifuge. Addition of these fractions to platelet-rich, platelet-poor and platelet-free plasma affected the partial thromboplastin and Stypven clotting times to various degrees. Addition of high density lipoprotein (HDL) to platelet-poor and platelet-free plasma shortened both the partial thromboplastin and the Stypven time, whereas addition of low density lipoprotein and very low density lipoprotein (LDL + VLDL) fractions only shortened the Stypven time. The additions had little or no effect in platelet-rich plasma.Experiments involving the addition of anti-HDL antibodies to plasmas with different platelet contents and measuring of clotting times produced results that were in good agreement with those noted when lipoprotein was added. The relation between structure and the clot-promoting activity of various phospholipid components is discussed.

AbstractIn this paper, a balanced-to-balanced (BTB) branch-slotline directional coupler (DC) is firstly presented, which can realize an arbitrary power division ratios (PDRs). The coupler is composed by microstrip-to-slotline (MS) transition structures and branch-slotline coupled structures. The single-ended to balanced-ended conversion is simplified and easy to implemented by the MS transition structures, which intrinsically leads to the differential-mode (DM) transmission and common-mode (CM) suppression. Moreover, the different PDRs which are controlled by the widths of branch-slotlines can be achieved. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed design method, two prototype circuits of the proposed coupler with different PDRs are fabricated and measured. The return loss and the isolation of two designs are all better than 10 dB. Moreover, the CM suppressions are greater than 35 dB. A good agreement between the simulation and measurement results is observed.

Background Chest radiography (CR) is employed as the evaluation of pneumoconiosis; however, we sometimes encounter cases in which computed tomography (CT) is more effective in detecting subtle pathological changes or cases in which CR yields false-positive results. Purpose To compare CR to CT in the diagnosis of early-stage pneumoconiosis. Material and Methods CR and CT were performed for 132 workers with an occupational history of mining. We excluded 23 cases of arc-welder’s lung. Five readers who were experienced chest radiologists or pulmonologists independently graded the pulmonary small opacities on CR of the remaining 109 cases. We then excluded 37 cases in which the CT data were not sufficient for grading. CT images of the remaining 72 cases were graded by the five readers. We also assessed the degree of pulmonary emphysema in those cases. Results The grade of profusion on CR (CR score) of all five readers was identical in only 5 of 109 cases (4.6%). The CR score coincided with that on CT in 40 of 72 cases (56%). The CT score was higher than that on CR in 13 cases (18%). On the other hand, the CT score was lower than that on CR in 19 cases (26%). The incidence of pulmonary emphysema was significantly higher in patients whose CR score was higher than their CT score. Conclusion CT is more sensitive than CR in the evaluation of early-stage pneumoconiosis. In cases with emphysema, the CR score tends to be higher in comparison to that on CT.

Thorough assessment of dynamic upper airway obstruction (UAO) in Robin sequence (RS) is critical, but traditional evaluation modalities have significant limitations. Four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) is promising in that it enables objective and quantitative evaluation throughout all phases of respiration. However, there exist few protocols or analysis tools to assist in obtaining and interpreting the vast amounts of obtained data. A protocol and set of data analysis tools were developed to enable quantification and visualization of dynamic 4D-CT data. This methodology was applied to a sample case at 2 time points. In the patient with RS, overall increases in normalized airway caliber were observed from 5 weeks to 1 year. There was, however, continued dynamic obstruction at all airway levels, though objective measures of UAO did improve at the nasopharynx and oropharynx. Use of 4D-CT and novel analyses provide additional quantitative information to evaluate UAO in patients with RS.

Objective: To evaluate the association of serum malondialdehyde low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL), an oxidatively modified LDL, with the prevalence of high-risk plaques (HRP) determined with coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) in statin-treated patients. Methods: This study was a single-center retrospective cohort comprising 268 patients (mean age 67 years, 58% men) with statin therapy and who underwent coronary CTA for suspected stable coronary artery disease. Patients were classified into two groups according to median MDA-LDL level or median LDL-C level. Coronary CTA-verified HRP was defined when two or more characteristics, including positive remodeling, low-density plaques, and spotty calcification, were present. Results: Patients with HRP had higher MDA-LDL (p = 0.011), but not LDL-C (p = 0.867) than those without HRP. High MDA-LDL was independently associated with HRP (odds ratio 1.883, 95% confidential interval 1.082–3.279) after adjustment for traditional risk factors. Regarding incremental value of MDA-LDL for predicting CTA-verified HRP, addition of serum MDA-LDL levels to the baseline model significantly increased global chi-square score from 26.1 to 32.8 (p = 0.010). Conclusions: A high serum MDA-LDL level is an independent predictor of CTA-verified HRP, which can lead to cardiovascular events in statin-treated patients.

Fluid injection at the tip of highly loaded compressor rotors is known to be effective in suppressing the onset of rotating stall and eventually compressor instability. However, using such stability enhancement methods in a multistage compressor might not only stabilize certain stages but has also an impact on radial and axial matching. In order to account for tip injection during the early stages of compressor design, this paper focuses on the development of a method to model the physical effects underlying tip injection within a streamline curvature method. With the help of system identification it could be shown that a rotor subject to the discrete jets of tip injection adapts to the varying flow conditions according to a first order model. This information was used to generate a time-dependent input for the steady equations used with a streamline curvature method and eventually to model the unsteady response of the rotor to tip injection. Comparing the results obtained with the enhanced streamline curvature model to measurement results, good agreement could be shown which raised confidence that the influence of tip injection on axial and radial matching was sufficiently captured.

SummaryClinical and computed tomographic (CT) data on a consecutive series of 41 elderly patients with affective disorders are presented, and comparisons made with a group of 50 healthy controls. In both groups ventricular size increased with age, but only in the controls was there an age correlation with sulcal widening. Using clinical and radiological criteria, the prevalence of cerebrovascular disease in the patient group was 12 per cent. A sub-group of patients with enlarged ventricles emerged, whose first depression began later in life, and who at the time of this study were older and showed more ‘endogenous’ features than the remainder. It is suggested that this provides further evidence that organic cerebral factors may have aetiological significance in some depressions of old age.

In this paper, a novel compact broadband antenna at UHF frequencies is presented with canonical shapes. Hemispherical, conical and cylindrical shapes have all been considered for antenna configuration. The designed antenna provides an instantaneous frequency range from 370 to 5,000 MHz with omnidirectional characteristics. The antenna was simulated in CST Microwave Studio, fabricated and evaluated; the results are presented. The simulated and measurement results are in good agreement. The antenna has voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) ≤ 1.9:1 in 400–570 MHz, 2,530–3,740 MHz and 4,180–4,620 MHz; it has VSWR ≤ 3:1 over the operating frequency range 370–5,000 MHz and the measured gain varies from -0.6 to 4.5 dBi over the frequency band. The concept of canonical-shaped antenna elements and the incorporation of triple sleeves resulted in a reduction of the length of the antenna by 62% compared to the length of a half-wave dipole antenna designed at the lowest frequency. The antenna can be used for trans-receiving applications in wireless communication.
