This study focusses on the influence of the family context on the development of entrepreneurial intention (EI) among young adults with entrepreneurial parents. It extends the EI literature by drawing on social cognitive career theory to study the interaction between entrepreneurial parents and their children. We introduce the learning experiences ‘vicarious learning’ and ‘social persuasion’ as antecedents of EI and found significant empirical support for the influence of social persuasion. In addition, we study the relationship between gender and EI. Our results not only confirm the direct effect of gender on EI but also reveal a significant mediating effect of parental preference – one of the social persuasion factors studied – on the gender–EI relationship.

ABSTRACTThis study aims to determine and analyze the mediating effect of entrepreneurial outcome expectations and entrepreneurial attitude on the influence of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on entrepreneurial intention. This study uses a quantitative approach with explanatory survey methods. The data collection tool in this study uses a questionnaire. In contrast, in determining the number of samples, this study applied convenience sampling so as obtain 75 young people in district Sukaresik, Tasikmalaya. The analysis technique carried out in this study was regression-based Serial Multiple Mediators using Macro Process software developed by Andrew F. Hayes. The result showed that entrepreneurial self-efficacy to entrepreneurial intention has a direct influence. In addition, entrepreneurial outcome expectations and entrepreneurial attitudes also serially mediate the effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on entrepreneurial intentions. The originality of this research is the adaptation of Social Cognitive Career Theory into entrepreneurial intention research which is still relatively rare. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode survei eksplanotori. Adapun alat pengumpulan data penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner, sedangkan dalam proses penentuan sampel penelitian ini menerapkan teknik convenience sampling sehingga didapatkan 75 orang pemuda di Kecamatan Sukaresik Kabupaten Tasikmalaya. Teknik analisis data yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini Analisis Mediasi Serial Berbasis Pendekatan Regresi dengan menggunakan Software Macro PROCESS yang dikembangkan oleh Andrew F. Hayes. Hasil temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa efikasi diri kewirausahaan berpengaruh secara langsung terhadap intensi wirausaha, selain itu harapan hasil kewirausahaan dan sikap kewirausahaan juga secara serial memediasi pengaruh efikasi diri kewirausahaan terhadap intensi wirausaha. Orisinalitas dari penelitian ini adalah adaptasi Social Cognitive Career Theory ke dalam riset intensi wirausaha yang masih relatif jarang dilakukan. Penelitian ini memiliki kontribusi teoretis dalam riset-riset intensi kewirausahaan yang selama ini masih didominasi oleh theory planned behavior yang dikembangkan oleh Icek Ajzen.

PurposeBased on a theoretical framework grounded in the social-cognitive theory and its derivative the social-cognitive career theory, the main purpose of this paper is to examine the role of entrepreneurial exposure in moderating the relationship between self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention in the presence of different levels of outcome expectations.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of 643 secondary students from Colombia, the authors tested the validity and reliability of scales used to measure the main constructs of the socio-cognitive career theory and used the construct of entrepreneurial exposure to examine contingent hypotheses using a four-step linear regression analysis.FindingsThe study results suggest that although the main social-cognitive career variables (self-efficacy and outcome expectation) and entrepreneurial exposure directly influence the formation of entrepreneurial intention and thus support previous findings, the authors also discover a new configuration of (interacting) antecedents. While on the one hand, even a low level of entrepreneurial exposure leads to a significant increase in the entrepreneurial intention of secondary students with high outcome expectation and high self-efficacy; on the other hand, high entrepreneurial exposure leads to a decrease in entrepreneurial intention among students with high entrepreneurial expectation and high self-efficacy.Research limitations/implicationsThe main implication of the study findings is although entrepreneurial exposure is beneficial for fostering entrepreneurial intention among secondary students, a high level of entrepreneurial exposure can have a detrimental effect especially among those with high self-efficacy and outcome expectations.Practical implicationsThe paper suggests implications and suggestions for educators to foster the development of entrepreneurial intentions among students.Originality/valueThis study provides empirical evidence on the formation of entrepreneurial intention in a new setting. In addition, it improves one’s understanding of the main tenets of social-cognitive career theory by taking into account an important environment factor that can have a contrasting impact on the formation on entrepreneurial intention among adolescents.

The ratio of women in managerial positions is still not satisfactory. However, little research has been pursued towards explaining the issues why they are not getting the top positions in any organizations. Researchers have identified the importance of the social support and corporate culture in the connection of the framework of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) which remains unaddressed in the explicating the relationship between social support, corporate culture and women career advancement. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the issues that have effect on women career advancement. In addition, this paper is only a theoretical exploration, it is expected that this work lead towards an explanation of the relationship between social support, corporate culture and women career advancement, which may be studied further to determine the empirical finding about the other dynamic of the (SCCT).

Purpose Entrepreneurial intention plays a major role in entrepreneurship academia and practice. However, little is known about the intentions of entrepreneurs in the social area of venture creation. This paper aims to formulate a well-organized model of social entrepreneurial intention. Design/methodology/approach The paper draws on intention models in entrepreneurship literature in general and social entrepreneurship in particular to identify gaps. Based on these findings, a new conceptual model is formulated. Findings There is no research to be found which uses the social cognitive career theory (SCCT) to explain about an individual’s intention to become a social entrepreneur, although this theory is recently suggested as an inclusive framework for entrepreneurial intention (Doan Winkel et al., 2011). It is also supportive by the empirical research of Segal et al. (2002). Therefore, a conceptual model of entrepreneurial intention in the field of social entrepreneurship is formulated based on adapting and extending the SCCT. Originality/value The paper contributes to the social entrepreneurship literature by providing new insights about social entrepreneurial intention. The result has important implications for theory and practice. In theory, it is the first model offering the SCCT as the background of formation for social entrepreneurial intention, with a distinct perspective of social entrepreneurship as a career. It raises a future direction for researchers to test this model. In practice, this framework provides a broad view of factors that could contribute to the success of the would-be a social entrepreneur.

<p><em>This study aims to determine the indirect effect on the relationship between empathy and social entrepreneurial intentions in students of Bung Hatta University. A total of 150 samples were used in this study. The analysis technique used is regression with mediating variables using the testing procedures of Baron and Kenney (1986). The results of the study showed that the attitude becoming social entrepreneur (ATB) mediated in full the influence between empathy and social entrepreneurial intentions. ATB was also found to have a positive and significant effect on the social entrepreneurial intentions. The findings of this study indicate that the relationship between empathy and entrepreneurial intention is indirect effect.</em></p><p><em><br /></em></p><p>Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh tidak langsung (indirect effect) pada hubungan antara empati dengan minat berwirausaha sosial pada mahasiswa Universitas Bung Hatta. Sebanyak 150 sampel digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Teknik analisis yang digunakan adalah regresi dengan variabel pemediasi dengan menggunakan prosedur pengujian (Baron &amp; Kenny, 1986). Hasil pengujian penelitian menunjukkan bahwa attitude becoming social entreprenuer (ATB) memediasi secara penuh pengaruh antara empati terhadap minat berwirausaha sosial. ATB juga ditemukan berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap minat berwirausaha sosial. Temuan penelitian ini menujukkan bahwa hubungan antara empati dengan niat berwirausaha bersifat indirect effect.</p><p><em><br /></em></p>

Little is known about the relationship between social comparison orientation and mental health, especially in the psychological capital context. We proposed a theoretical model to examine the impact of ability- and opinion-based social comparison orientation on mental health using data from 304 undergraduates. We also examined the mediating effect of the four psychological capital components of hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism in the relationship between social comparison orientation and mental health. Results show that an ability (vs. opinion) social comparison orientation was negatively (vs. positively) related to the psychological capital components. Further, the resilience and optimism components of psychological capital fully mediated the social comparison orientation–mental health relationship. Our findings indicate that psychological capital should be considered in the promotion of mental health, and that the two social comparison orientation types have opposite effects on psychological capital.

AbstractBoth psychological and entrepreneurship research have highlighted the pivotal role of job satisfaction in the process of entrepreneurial career decisions. In support of this, mounting evidence point to inter-relationships between entrepreneurial intention, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. Prior research operationalized entrepreneurial careers as an escape from poor work environments; thus, there is a lack of understanding regarding how job-satisfaction can trigger entrepreneurship within and related to the environment of universities. This study, draws on Social Cognitive Career Theory and the concept of entrepreneurial intention, to address whether the role of job satisfaction is a moderating factor between outcome expectations and entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, we examine to what extent (I) entrepreneurial intention and (II) spin-off intention are determined by certain outcome expectations and perceived behavioral control. To address these questions this study examined academic researchers in specialized and non-technical fields and builds on a survey of 593 academic researchers at Swiss Universities of Applied Science. The results showed that outcome expectations are a significant predictor for entrepreneurial intentions, in general, and spin-off intentions, in particular. A multi-group analysis corroborated that job satisfaction operates as a motivational factor in entrepreneurial transition and interactions with entrepreneurial outcome expectations. In conclusion, the concept of job satisfaction and Social Cognitive Career Theory were powerful constructs to better the understand the process of entrepreneurial career decisions by academic researchers.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the relationship between conflict handling styles (CHS) of business managers in their entrepreneurial intentions (EI). The business manager’s propensity to become entrepreneurs is a relatively unexplored area of research. The relationship between conflict handling style and entrepreneurial intention is under-researched, particularly in a developing country like Kosovo. Design/methodology/approach A self-report questionnaire containing measures of conflict handing style, entrepreneurial intention and demographics was delivered to business managers in Kosovo. Findings Forcing style has a positive and statistically significant relationship with entrepreneurial intention. Yielding, compromising, problem solving and avoiding have weak and insignificant effects on EI. Research limitations/implications The relationship between conflict handling styles of managers and their entrepreneurial intention is investigated. No situational, organizational or environmental factor was considered influencing this relationship. Practical implications Conflict management is important in predicting the entrepreneurial intention of managers. Organizations should design human resource interventions aimed at effective team composition and employee retention to ensure performance. Originality/value This is the first study to investigate the relationship between conflict handling style and entrepreneurial intention using a manager sample. Furthermore, it is the first study of conflict handling styles and entrepreneurial intention of managers in Kosovo.
