The aim of the study is to investigate factors that influence the adoption and use of educational technology by students of a higher education institution in developing countries. The study employed the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). The online survey method was used to collect data from 286 students of a higher education institution in Nigeria. The maximum likelihood method based on structural equation modelling (SEM) using IBM Amos 22.0 application was used to analyse the data. The study determined that performance expectancy and effort expectancy (p < 0.001) were significant factors in influencing the behavioural intention to use Canvas. Social Influence was deemed to be a statistically non-significant factor in influencing behavioural intentions as (p > 0.05). Facilitating conditions and behavioural intentions were determined to be salient factors that positively influence the actual usage of Canvas by the students. The results from the data obtained partially support the UTAUT’s ability to explain the factors responsible for the acceptance of educational technology in developing countries, in Nigeria to be specific. Furthermore the study contributes to the formulation of approaches and guidelines to enhance the adoption of educational technologies in developing countries.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an accelerated migration from face-to-face to online learning. This article aims to explore and describe how psychology students experienced the migration from face-to-face to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. It entailed a qualitative research design with an exploratory and descriptive approach. The participants were 28 purposively sampled psychology students from a Private Higher Education Institution in Gauteng. An online survey method was employed to gather the needed information which was then subjected to a thematic analysis. It emerged that the challenges experienced by students were internet connectivity issues, insufficient computer literacy, reduced class time, anxiety, physical impact, and communication issues. Moreover, some benefits related to flexibility, the convenience of online studies and safety from infection with COVID-19 were identified. It was also noted that having certain attributes such as independence, time management skills, having support and being tech savvy improved the online learning process. Some opportunities for Higher Education Institutions to improve the experiences of students included creativity in module delivery as well as providing guidelines on how to use these online platforms.

This chapter examines an initiative to create educational technology (ET) Champions and leaders within a higher education institution in Singapore. It examines how the concept of communities of practice was applied to an initiative for transforming teaching and learning through educational technology. Instructional designers coached ET Champions in the principles of creating learning objects who later returned to their respective colleges to work with other lecturers. ET Champions progressed through five stages, which included peripheral, legitimate, core, strategic and transformational membership. Each stage required support and guidance within the community.

The objectives of this study were to test an adapted four-factor model of burnout consisting of Exhaustion, Cynicism, Professional Efficacy and Cognitive Weariness for employees of a higher education institution in South Africa and to determine differences in burnout levels between different language groups and employees with different years of experience at the institution. A crossectional survey design (N = 372) was used. The Maslach Burnout Inventory – General Survey, the Cognitive Weariness Scale and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Structural equation modelling confirmed the hypothesised four-factor model of burnout. The scales showed acceptable internal consistencies. Analysis of variance revealed differences in burnout and cognitive weariness for groups with different languages and different years of experience at the institution.

Research highlights the influence of service quality, institutional reputation, student satisfaction in building student loyalty. Quantitative approach was used with a survey method. The research respondents were 185 students from PGRI University Palembang. Analysis techniques using variance-based structural equation models (SEM) SmartPLS. The results of the study shows that service quality has a significant effect on reputation and student satisfaction, but service quality and student satisfaction have no significant effect on student loyalty. On the contrary, the reputation of an institution has a very significant direct effect on loyalty. Student service quality has a significant indirect effect on student loyalty through the reputation of the institution, this implies that the reputation of the institution carries a relative influence relationship between service quality on student loyalty. These findings can help higher education institutions to make better strategic plans to increase student loyalty.

The need of skilled workforce to meet the challenges of the 21st century puts teaching effectiveness to the forefront of higher education policies. Therefore, the current study explores the Characteristics of Effective Teaching (CET) as observed by the students from a higher education institution in the United Arab Emirates. The study employed a descriptive survey method wherein qualitative analysis of data was used. The respondents (N=199; 121 were females and 78 were males) are registered in General Education courses using a pre-constructed interview schedule. The 69 CETs had been ascertained by qualitative method through axial coding of general themes in order to come-up with recommendations pointing to Effective Teaching Program (ETP). The dominant characteristics of effective teaching as perceived by the student respondents were 21 items with “helpful” topping the list, followed by “knowledgeable,” “friendly,” “organized,” and “flexible.” Six classifications were derived from clustering the CET, namely: buddy type, accommodating type, cool type, academician type, techie type, and non-biased type. The major findings reveal that the three important elements of effective teaching as perceived by students are academic qualification, attitudes, and skills. Specific recommendations to ETP are also introduced in the paper to strengthen the quality of teaching effectiveness.
