Knowledge management strategies adopted in agricultural research organizations in East Africa

In previous studies, Knowledge Management (KM) strategies have been examined as objects of organizations, instead of scrutinizing their characteristics or relative quality and content. This study aims to examine the key characteristics of KM strategies in Agricultural Research Organizations (AROs) in East Africa in terms of what exists, what does not exist and why. To comprehensively answer the research questions and understand the phenomena under investigation the study adopted a pragmatism paradigm to allow facts and concerns to arise from the context. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed using semi-structured Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and a questionnaire respectively. A novel empirical description and explanation of the key characteristics of KM strategies in AROs in East Africa is presented. The study identifies the key concepts and gaps in the characteristics of KM strategies and elucidates what AROs in East Africa should do differently to coherently formulate and execute KM strategies in practice. The main characteristics of KM strategies in AROs in East Africa are practicability, technology-focus, alignment, implementation processes and relevance. Through abstraction and theorization of the key concepts, a detailed description and explanation as a reference for scholars and practitioners in the KM field is provided. Further, the study highlights context as an important and relevant perspective in particularizing the characteristics of a KM strategy and interpretation of related empirical findings. Future studies can use the concepts presented in this study to develop a theoretical framework for analyzing the characteristics of KM strategies in organizations. The idea of linking the study outcome to an empirical situation is a novel contribution. The findings of this study shed new insights that confirm that understanding characteristics of KM strategies is beneficial to practitioners and scholars.

Housing industry is one of the most dynamic, risky, and challenging industries. In Malaysia, this industry has a poor reputation for managing risks, with many major projects failing to be completed within the allotted time. Due to the inherent risks involved in construction projects, it is essential to recognize the risks that cause problems associated with abandoned housing projects. Therefore, this study aims to identify the risks that contribute to issues of abandoned housing projects and to propose mitigation strategies. The methodologies used in this study are combination of qualitative and quantitative methods of literature review, questionnaire survey, and interview. The results show that many risks are involved in housing project, including risks related to environmental impacts, construction, politics, law, management, finance, materials, and economy, of which the probability of risks from unexpected ground condition, project delays, bureaucracy, contractual disputes between developer and landlord, weakness in management by inexperience developer, and financial crisis is very high. It was also found that all relevant parties involved in housing industry are required to have extensive cooperation in advance and should perform systematic risk management strategies in order to mitigate the risks leading to problems associated with abandoned housing projects.

AbstractThis article seeks to stimulate thought on the philosophy behind agricultural research. Pragmatism is identified as a philosophical basis for studying environmental issues that focus on human behavior. The ways in which this approach is applicable to the study of alternative agriculture are illuminated. “Behavioral pragmatists” differ from “behavioral positivists” in their aim, focus, process, and approach to research. I describe the main goals of the pragmatic behavioral approach: accepting a systems approach to study the interrelationships between humans and the environment; gaining understanding through human experiences; viewing problems as whole complex “problematic situations”; and promoting social activism and appropriate policy formulation. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods is often most effective. Pragmatism allows for holistic analysis that incorporates numerous factors that influence human uses of the environment. A specific example shows how behavioral pragmatism is effective in research on alternative agriculture.

Objective - This study examines the concept of knowledge management in higher education institutions, followed by a systematization of knowledge practices and tools to link several stakeholders in the process of knowledge management in higher education institutions and promote knowledge sharing across several key processes and services in higher education institutions. Methodology/Technique - This study uses a mixed approach of qualitative and quantitative methods. The respondents include stakeholders in public administrative departments between the ages of 30 and 66. The number of respondents represents 20 to 30% of the total population. This study concludes that in general, the Department of Public Administration Universitas Brawijaya has successfully implemented the concept of knowledge management. However, a lack of knowledge and stakeholder acceptance has lead to less effective implementation. Findings - This research suggests that there is a need for new strategies to improve stakeholders' knowledge and acceptance of Department and University strategies. Novelty - The study proposes a framework to improve knowledge sharing and collaboration in higher education institutions, fostering an environment of continuous learning and discovery. The study also makes conclusion and suggestions for future work. Purpose This paper assesses the role of collaborative knowledge building in the co-creation of artifacts in the knowledge management field. Design/methodology/approach Fifty-eight papers published in six knowledge management-related journals were analyzed. The framework for analysis included 13 codes. Studies were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Findings Findings showed that several factors influenced the co-creation of artifacts in collaborative knowledge building. At the micro level, individual motivation, capabilities and reflexivity seemed to play a central role in co-creation processes. At the meso level, teamwork and shared understanding were identified as two key major factors. At the macro level, structural, behavioral and cognitive factors were identified; they included organizational rules and workplace setting, organizational culture and learning and memory. Managerial agency, characteristics of artifacts and knowledge brokers and boundary spanners also seemed to have an influence at the inter-organizational levels of analysis. Research limitations/implications This study has limitations related to scope of contribution, covered time span (17 years) and restrictions in journal subscriptions. Practical implications The study will help managers understand the intricacies of collaborative knowledge building practices to increase organizational overall effectiveness and performance. Originality/value This study is a first attempt to systematically assess the role of collaborative knowledge building in the co-creation of artifacts, and therefore, it represents a primary reference in the knowledge management field. It proposes some initial propositions that can guide future empirical studies.

This study used two mixed methods are qualitative and quantitative methods, qualitative methods were analysed using semi structured techniques based on interviews and case studies. Whereas, the quantitative methods were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science. Descriptive analysis based on frequencies and percentages was performed to define the major demographic characteristics of the respondents. This study aimed at identifying the major factors that affect KMP, KOL, KM dynamic capabilities, and innovation performance, in particular, influence of knowledge management on managerial performance services in developing countries. The results of this study are expected contribute to in-depth understanding of how factors affect adoption of in the high tech sector in developing countries and play critical role in improving the level of their using.

This article aims to show how social science methods can be combined with agronomic research to yield information directly relevant to the development of agricultural technology for small farmers. First, problems identification and definition are worked out through reconnaissance and case studies. Then, quantitative estimates of the prevalence and impact of those problems can be obtained through the execution of a survey and trials. The combination of qualitative and quantitative methods can result in a substantial change in outlook on a specific problem, as is indicated for the case of rice tranplanting in the Dominican Republic. The development and expansion of knowledge management as an important management philosophy has a significant impact on human resources management as well as on organization as a whole. In this context, knowledge management processes have been used as a strategic tool within human resources management.Therefore, functions of human resources management must adapt itself to this change. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of human resources management in the management of knowledge and to reveal the effects of knowledge management practices on the functions of human resources byexamining the relationship between human resources and knowledge management. In this context, a theoretical investigation was conducted. It has been determined that significant changes occurred on the functions of human resources management such as selection and recruitment, performance management, remuneration and reward, training and development within the framework of the knowledge management strategies.
