Representation and Diversity, Advocacy, and Nonprofit Arts Organizations

In recent years, arts and culture nonprofits have sought to make themselves more relevant to community issues by engaging in advocacy. Based on survey data drawn from a national sample of arts nonprofits, this study compares the different levels of advocacy carried out by all arts nonprofits and by minority-led arts nonprofits. To explain the varying levels of advocacy, this study focuses on the diversity of an organization’s constituents and its surrounding community, as well as the ethnic or racial identity and the professional background of its leader. Our results indicate that constituent and community racial and ethnic compositions are associated with the level of advocacy at arts nonprofits. Also, arts nonprofits with leaders who have been in the arts industry for a significant time are more likely to be engaged in advocacy than otherwise similar organizations. We discuss the implication of diversity and professional leadership on arts nonprofits’ advocacy.

Nonprofits face increasing pressure to compete in the market, while they must maintain their civic commitment. Focusing on the arts and cultural sector, this study conducts the first large-scale, comprehensive empirical measurement of nonprofits’ engagement in various roles. The article uses a previously validated 18-item role index to categorize nonprofits as primarily engaged in either civic or market functions, so that a subsequent regression analysis can identify the common characteristics of civically active nonprofit arts service organizations. The data come from (a) qualitative interviews with leaders of arts nonprofits, (b) a random national sample of more than 900 arts nonprofits, and (c) Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax returns of the sample nonprofits. The findings suggest that civically active arts nonprofits have diverse networks, recognize civic engagement as the industry norm, and are consciously aware of their nonprofit status. The results suggest how nonprofits can balance their equally important market- and civic-oriented functions.

What is the relationship between a city’s entrepreneurial climate and the sustainability of arts and culture nonprofits?  Business, the arts, and innovation do not exist in isolation.  New York Times writer David Brooks (2011) opined, “The roots of great innovation are never just in the technology itself.”   The significance and value of the arts as community assets has sparked public intervention to leverage the arts to generate a variety of instrumental benefits. The arts were famously positioned as being of significant value for knowledge workers, the creative class, and the entrepreneurs powering the knowledge economy.  This has been portrayed, largely, as a one-way relationship in which the arts benefit cities economic pursuits.  Such depictions fail to consider the influence of open systems and recognize how communities simultaneously influence the population of arts and culture organizations.  This paper asks, “How do entrepreneurship levels affect the population dynamics of arts and culture nonprofits?”  The interactions between the formation and exit of nonprofit arts organizations and entrepreneurial climate of the 50 US states for the period from 1989 to 2012 are analyzed using negative binomial regression.  Higher entrepreneurial climates are associated with lower incidences of nonprofit arts and culture formations and lower exits.  The implications of this and opportunities for additional research are discussed.

This article investigates the relationship between several elements of organizational strategy and arts and culture nonprofits perceived contributions to community sustainability. We ask the following research question: What are the drivers of arts and culture nonprofits’ engagement in community sustainability? Drawing on data collected from a survey of 175 nonprofits in the state of Michigan, this article reports the findings about arts and culture organizations perceived engagement in community sustainability and factors that may foster or inhibit such engagement. The study advances our understanding of the role that nonprofit organizations play in fostering local sustainable development, and it also informs broader scholarly discourse on the role of arts and culture organizations in a society.

AbstractThis article discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement on the arts and cultural sector in the United States, placing the 2020 crises in the context of the United States’s historically decentralized approach to supporting the arts and culture. After providing an overview of the United States’s private, locally focused history of arts funding, we use this historical lens to analyze the combined effects of the pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement on a single metropolitan area – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We trace a timeline of key events in the national and local pandemic response and the reaction of the arts community to the Black Lives Matter movement, arguing that the nature of these intersecting responses, and their fallout for the arts and cultural sector, stem directly from weaknesses in the United States’s historical approach to administering the arts. We suggest that, in the context of widespread organizational vulnerability caused by the pandemic, the United States’s decentralized approach to funding culture also undermines cultural organizations’ abilities to respond to issues of public relevance and demonstrate their civic value, threatening these organizations’ legitimacy.

Abstract Although nonprofit organizations are expected to contribute to public interests, their tax exemption does not necessarily entail serving the broader public. What, then, makes nonprofit organizations orient their work externally, serving the broader public, instead of internally, pursuing private goals? This paper examines this question by studying the link between nonprofits’ board governance, with a specific focus on boards’ racial diversity, and their contribution to public interests. The analysis of the 2015 US Local Arts Agency Census reveals that boards’ racial diversity is closely related with nonprofit arts organizations’ participation in serving the broader public through civic engagement and community development activities. The findings offer insights on how nonprofit boards, which are neither publicly elected nor publicly accountable, can be trusted to attend to broader issues of the public interest.

When charities launch capital campaigns, they hope to attract large amounts of resources in a relatively short period of time; however, other charities in the area are likely to see such campaigns as disruptive to the natural distribution of resources to area nonprofits by disproportionately directing area donations to a single organization. This study seeks to understand the effects capital campaigns have on both the fundraising performance of other nonprofits and the makeup of a local nonprofit ecology. The analysis uses data from a randomly sampled set of nonprofit arts organizations that had capital campaigns for facilities projects between 1994 and 2007 and Internal Revenue Service Form 990 data on 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organizations in each county. The results illustrate that a capital campaign positively affects the fundraising performance of other charities in a local nonprofit ecology, but that campaigns decrease the size of a local nonprofit ecology.

The article introduces the topic of this special issue on artists and professionalism from the perspective of the sociology of the arts and culture, in order to demonstrate how the contributions significantly develop studies of professions in general. Some theoretical concepts are defined and discussed: culture, arts, occupations, professions, status, field, symbolic and social capital, emotional labour, and reversed economy. An illustration is used to demonstrate pricing in arts and what may explain it. There is a focus on the field of art with a brief comparison to the academic field. In this issue we find studies on artists, authors, and theatre actors, which provide significant contributions to these themes in theories and studies of professions.Keywords: creative industries, creative occupations, professions, status, field, symbolic and social capital

The development of instructional media in this paper is the development of learning media used in learning Arts and Culture class X High School in Pangururan District, Samosir Regency. The learning media developed are invincible with the syllabus in class X, namely "presentation of musical works". The objectives of this study were to: (1) develop traditional Karo music learning videos; (2) Developing Karo traditional music learning textbooks. This research uses a Research & Development or research and development approach. The development of this learning media will be used by art teachers who are members of the MGMP (subject teacher deliberation) for Cultural Arts, especially art teachers in Pangururan District, Samosir Regency. The research conducted resulted in the development of instructional media in the form of learning videos for learning traditional Karo music and textbooks for learning traditional Karo music. The learning media developed in the form of learning videos for traditional Karo music includes the technique of playing Karo traditional music which is incorporated in the kulcapi drum ensemble whose instruments consist of kulcapi, keteng-keteng, and mangkuk. The next learning media is in the form of a textbook which contains the techniques for playing the kulcapi drum in the song Piso Surit and Terang Bulan. The two learning media that have been developed help the arts and culture teachers in carrying out the ethnicity of the ethnic North Sumatra.Keywords: Development, Learning Media, Ethnicity, North Sumatra
