Promoting Organizational Performance in Indian Insurance Industry: The Roles of Workplace Spirituality and Organizational Citizenship Behaviour

Interest in spirituality as a scholarly topic has grown in recent years. The present research aspires to investigate the relationship between workplace spirituality and organizational performance. First, necessity of workplace spirituality for organizational performance is investigated with the help of necessary condition analysis (NCA). Second, mediation effect of organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) in relationship between workplace spirituality and organizational performance is explored with the help of technique propagated by Baron and Kenny (1986). Hierarchal regression is used to test Baron and Kenny’s (1986) conditions of mediation. Results of NCA establish workplace spirituality as a necessary condition for occurrence of organizational performance. The OCB is also reported to partially mediate the relationship between workplace spirituality and organizational performance. Practical implications, limitations of the study and suggestions for future researchers have been discussed in the last part of the article.

This decade witnesses renewed interest in research studies on workplace spirituality (WSP). The present research investigates the relationship between WSP and job satisfaction (JS) with the help of two approaches. First, with the help of necessary condition analysis (NCA), it is explored that whether WSP is a necessary condition for the occurrence of JS. Second, the mediation effect of organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) in association amid WSP and JS is examined using Baron and Kenny’s (1986) technique of mediation analysis. A sample of 194 managers working in insurance companies is collected for the study. The study reports a positive correlation between all three variables of the study. Further, WSP does not come out as a necessary condition for JS. A partial mediation effect of OCB is reported. Practical implications and limitations are also discussed in the article.

AbstractWhat is the relationship between individual members' organizational citizenship behaviours (OCB) and team-level performance? Using a social cognitive perspective, the current study proposes that the relationship is mediated by a team's cohesion and collective efficacy. We collected data at two points in time from three sources with a sample of 462 salespersons representing 62 teams (62 branches) of a financial institute in Taiwan. The results support the theoretical argument that OCB positively influences organizational performance. Furthermore, group cohesion and collective efficacy fully mediated the direct effects of OCB towards individuals and the organization on team performance. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

<p class="Abstract">Workplace spirituality has steadily been gaining attention in the last couple of years. Many researchers have investigated the role of “workplace spirituality” with the aim of generating research data that would firmly entrench this construct as vital in the workplace. This article proposes the relationships between workplace spirituality, job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behaviors. It examines the relationship between three workplace spirituality components–meaning and purpose in work, recognition of an inner life or spirit and interconnectedness with the various forms in which organizational citizenship behaviours manifest, mediated by the job satisfaction experienced by the employees. This study can provide significant inputs to promote managerial effectiveness, change management, leadership, holistic performance and growth of organizations, through environments which promote workplace spirituality.</p>

The main purpose of this research is to explore the deepest significance of workplace spirituality. The importance of this spirituality makes a more productive contribution to the workplace. Spiritual values motivate workers to dedicate themselves more for a better atmosphere of work. A critical literature review shows us that each organization should be spiritual-friendly. Workplace spirituality can increase individual creativity, organizational citizenship, sense of self-fulfillment of employees, honesty, trust, and organizational commitment. In short, the organizations that encourage workplace spirituality will experience enhanced organizational performance.

PurposeThe objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between leaders' forgiveness and organizational performance using radical innovation as an explanatory variable.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted in a sample frame of 11,594 Spanish companies. A total of 600 valid questionnaires were obtained. The structural equations were used to validate the proposed hypotheses.FindingsResults confirmed the hypotheses proposed in the model: the authors provided, through structural equations, empirical evidence of the relationship between leaders' forgiveness and organizational performance, mediated by radical innovation. Leaders' forgiveness promotes radical innovation and, in turn, performance.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample of companies is heterogeneous in terms of firm turnover, size and age. The study is focused on radical innovation.Practical implicationsThe present study may help to develop more humane policies to manage human resources, by taking into account employees' feelings and needs.Originality/valueThe business field is closer to competitive values and has traditionally underestimated the importance of leaders' forgiveness. This is one of the few studies that empirically analyze the consequences of leaders' forgiveness within organizations.

Do entrepreneurial companies make responsible corporate citizens? In this paper, we examine the relationship between companies' entrepreneurial orientation and their corporate citizenship. An empirical study consisting of 261 South Korean firms reveals that entrepreneurial orientation does not have direct causal effect on corporate citizenship. Analysis also shows that market orientation has full mediation effect between entrepreneurial orientation and corporate citizenship. The findings indicate that entrepreneurial companies may indeed act more responsibly if they are also market oriented. Practical implications are discussed.

Organizational citizenship behaviour has been defined as the individual’s behaviour that is discretionary and not directly recognized by the formal reward system, but it promotes the effective functioning of the organization. Because the importance of organizational citizenship behaviour in organization especially in service sector, this study focused more details on how workplace spirituality enhance the performance of organizational citizenship behaviour among nurses. This relationship grounded by Social Exchange Theory. There were three dimension of workplace spirituality, which meaningfulness, sense of community, and organizational values alignment. While, organizational citizenship behaviour has been measured using five dimensions, which altruism, courtesy, civic virtue, conscientiousness, and sportsmanship. An 800 sets of questionnaire have been distributed in four selected public hospital in Malaysia. Cluster and simple random sampling were used in this study. SPSS 23 and Amos 23 have been used in order analyses the data. Overall, the result revealed workplace spirituality has significant relationship towards organizational citizenship behaviour.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to survey volunteers and full-time employees in international non-profit organizations (NPOs) and explore the relationships among psychological contract (PC), organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and organizational performance (OP). Design/methodology/approach – Using 573 usable responses, a linear structural equation model (SEM) was developed to examine the relationships. Findings – The results demonstrate significant positive relationships between PC and OCB, OCB and OP and PC and OP. They also show the mediating effect of OCB on the relationship between PC and OP. Research limitations/implications – Beside mediation effect, OCB and other variables might exert significant moderation effect on the relationship between PC and OP. Companies could conduct longitudinal studies to examine the changes of PC and OCB impacts on OP. Practical implications – Companies pursuing Chinese market should cooperate with NPOs in multiple ways including marketing for philanthropic purposes, supporting volunteer services and sponsoring the NPO. This way the company’s image will improve and its business will expand among its Chinese clientele. Originality/value – Budget concerns often force NPOs to downsize full-time staff, making considerable portion of their operations rely on a large number of volunteers. This study offers practical guidelines for NPOs to effectively entice and support both volunteers and employees for achieving its organizational goals.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of quality of work life (QWL) on organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) of employees. Also, the paper examines the role of demographic variables, i.e. gender, position and type of organization as moderators of relationship between QWL and OCB. Design/methodology/approach A survey with sample of 375 was used in this study. PROCESS tool by Hayes (2013) was used to analyze the relation between QWL, OCB and demographic variables. Findings QWL was found to positively influence OCB. Gender and type of organization were found to moderate the relationship, whereas position failed to moderate the relation significantly. Practical implications The study reinforced the significance of QWL practices by organizations to improve extra-role behaviours of employees. Also, importance of considering gender and the industry you are in is emphasized in using and designing the QWL programme for employees. Originality/value While many antecedents have been studied in relation to OCB, QWL is rarely discussed. The paper attempts to reemphasize QWL’s importance in doing so in light of demographic variables as moderators.

PurposeThe study aims to examine the relationship between retailer's performance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices in Indian context. The article introduces a new conceptual model considering the parameters as per the stakeholder theory perspective.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted empirical research with CSR practices (CSRP) and other parameters to evaluate the retailers' performance using stakeholder theory. The authors present the results from 292 valid responses from the Indian retailers. The study used structured equation modeling (SEM) to present the analysis and the results.FindingsFindings indicate that CSRP along with additional constructs loyalty (L), reputation (R), customer satisfaction (CS) and competitive advantage (CA) have positive and significant impact on organizational performance (OP).Practical implicationsThe framework will serve as a guiding tool to the management of the retail outlets to examine carefully the link among CSRP with other variables presented in the study and subsequently to the retail outlet performance. The retailers must be more focused on the expectations and demands of the customers concerning products and services for better growth of the firms.Originality/valueThe uniqueness of the study lies in “CSR practices enabled integrated model” to examine the performance of the organizations. The proposed theoretical model would add value to the existing literature to help the retailers in process of their performance improvement.
