Written in a clear, accessible style, this book covers the fundamental aspects of soil science with an emphasis on topics useful to landscape architects and professionals in related fields. The book begins with a discussion of soil surveys developed in different countries, followed by a concise description of soil components and how the interactions between air, water, and nutrients affect plant growth. It examines methods for controlling erosion, particularly in light of modern irrigation techniques. It describes the chemistry of plant growth, devotes four chapters to macro- and micro-nutrients, and features a detailed discussion of ways to diagnose and correct plant disorders. It also looks at the engineering aspects of soils and includes a detailed list of references for further information. Written by an experienced teacher with an extensive background in landscape architecture, this volume will be an invaluable source for students and researchers in architecture, horticulture, and urban planning.

Modern engineering practice requires advanced numerical modeling because, among other things, it reduces the costs associated with prototyping or predicting the occurrence of potentially dangerous situations during operation in certain defined conditions. Different methods have so far been used to implement the real structure into the numerical version. The most popular have been variations of the finite element method (FEM). The aim of this Special Issue has been to familiarize the reader with the latest applications of the FEM for the modeling and analysis of diverse mechanical problems. Authors are encouraged to provide a concise description of the specific application or a potential application of the Special Issue.

One of the key challenges of the Service Oriented Architecture is the discovery of relevant services for a given task. In Semantic Web Services, service discovery is generally achieved by using the service profile ontology of OWL-S. Profile of a service is a derived, concise description and not a functional part of the semantic web service. There is no schema present in the service profile to describe the input, output (IO), and the IOs in the service profile are not always annotated with ontology concepts, whereas the process model has such a schema to describe the IOs which are always annotated with ontology concepts. In this paper, we propose a complementary sophisticated matchmaking approach which uses the concrete process model ontology of OWL-S instead of the concise service profile ontology. Empirical analysis shows that high precision and recall can be achieved by using the process model-based service discovery.

“Harry Wolcott uses fifty years of experience to take the reader inside the process of constructing an ethnographic study, offering a wealth of lessons from one of the masters of the genre”. This is indeed a concise description by the publisher. The text is constructed around the author’s five major studies. Wolcott thus gives a unique contribution to the field of ethnography as he presents some critical components of ethnography in his desire to share with us readers the results of his career-long search for the essence of ethnography. The book is divided into eight chapters. I give a critical review of the book, attempting to present the subject matter to potential readers, while drawing on its strengths and weaknesses.

Faces of the Salt Marshes of Delta Parnaíba, Norteastern Brasil   ABSTRACT This paper attempts to characterize ";;;;;;;;;;;;;Restinga";;;;;;;;;;;;; (coastal vegetation) located at EPAs (Environmental Protection Areas) in the Parnaiba river delta by the coast of the state of Piauí, in the northeast of Brazil. Vegetation forms in areas over on soils of the Quaternary age were studied and geographically-referenced. The three types of physiognomy were identified, these being the same types found at other ";;;;;;;;;;;;;Restinga";;;;;;;;;;;;; areas on the Brazilian coast, as well as the most frequent subtypes. Along with a concise description of the physiognomy found on the coast of Piauí, this paper also brings a list of the most frequent species that predominate in this landscape.  Keywords: Vegetal Physiognomy – Parnaiba River Delta Environmental Protection Areas.

The current report discusses Bromus diandrus, a new species in the flora of Bulgaria. A concise description of its morphological features with an emphasis on the characters that distinguish it from the already known representatives of Bromus sect. Genea in the country is presented. The newly established locality is characterized floristically and ecologically. The probabilities of the native or alien origin of the studied population are also discussed.

Chapter 1 provides a theoretical framework for understanding African women’s experiences within the broader scholarship on women in politics. The chapter discusses, in three stages, the choices African women must make as they aspire to candidacy, campaign in elections, and govern in office. For each stage, the authors review central theories in the literature on women’s representation and discuss how related hypotheses are upheld or contradicted by emerging evidence from African countries. These overviews highlight common empirical findings as well as specific contradictions across the eight countries examined in the book—Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Uganda, and Zambia. The chapter also provides a concise description of each empirical chapter’s core findings with an emphasis on how individual attributes (e.g., professional background, financial autonomy, organizational ties) and institutional structures (e.g., political parties, electoral systems, media organizations, patronage politics) interact to impinge on African women’s political trajectories.

This paper describes the modelling and analysis of the processes and activities used in the Blood Transfusion Centre of Hospital Brotzu (Cagliari – Italy), via FMECA (Failure Modes Effects and Criticalities Analysis) method, in order to enhance patient safety and improve clinical risk management. The first part of the study consists on an analysis of the present blood transfusion chain processes (AS-IS), obtained by reverse engineering. Then a concise description of the FMECA methodology is presented. After the introduction of the reengineered process (TO-BE), developed via introduction of RFID technology, the results of simulation will be presented. For each activity of the two configurations studied (AS-IS and TO-BE) some performance indicators were evaluated, then a sensitivity analysis has been carried out to investigate the consistency of FMECA analysis. Finally follows the comparison of results between the simulation of actual process and the reengineered one.
