The present research is focused on the measurement properties of the Decent Work Scale (DWS) in Australia and adds to the cumulative evidence of the measure’s international utility for psychological research into the role of work in people’s lives. The study contributes new evidence via a survey of a sample of workers ( N = 201) who completed the DWS and criterion measures of career-related factors including job satisfaction, work engagement, and withdrawal intentions. Correlated factors, higher order, and bifactor models were tested using confirmatory factor analysis. All models were satisfactory and the bifactor model evinced preferable fit. The DWS Values Congruence subscale predicted all criterion measures. Workers’ incomes and ratings of their occupations’ prestige had no main effects or interaction effect on the DWS subscales. Recommendations for future research include testing the DWS’s relations with measures of mental health which are known correlates of career-related outcomes.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test whether supportive workspace design, cultivation of high-quality leader–member relationships and vision alignment explain incremental variance in job satisfaction, work engagement and overall life satisfaction beyond antecedents identified in an earlier model of healthy workplace practices. Design/methodology/approach This paper reports the results of a survey study with a diverse sample of 214 employees. Findings In a series of regression analyses, the findings revealed that supportive workspace design, cultivation of high-quality leader–member relationships and vision alignment each explain incremental variance in one or more outcome variables (job satisfaction, work engagement and overall life satisfaction) beyond that of antecedents identified in an earlier model of healthy workplace practices. Research limitations/implications The present study identifies additional important variables to consider when conducting future research on healthy workplace practices. Future research could use longitudinal or experimental designs to further investigate the causal direction of the relationships identified in the present paper. Practical implications Managers can implement the practices identified in this paper to improve employees’ work engagement, job satisfaction and overall life satisfaction. Social implications This paper offers insights about how to improve employees’ lives, and thus, the potential impact is far-reaching and meaningful. Originality/value This paper empirically assesses workplace variables that were not included in tests of the prior healthy workplace practices model.

Personality traits were examined in relation to job satisfaction and career satisfaction for 1059 information technology (IT) professionals. As hypothesized, eight traits were significantly related to both job and career satisfaction: Assertiveness, Emotional Resilience, Extraversion, Openness, Teamwork Disposition, Customer Service Orientation, Optimism, and Work Drive. Regression analyses indicated that sets of three and four traits accounted for 17 and 25%, respectively, of job and career satisfaction variance. As expected, career satisfaction correlations were of generally higher magnitude than corresponding job satisfaction correlations. Results were interpreted in terms of IT research and theorizing. The findings that Extraversion and Teamwork Disposition were related to job and career satisfaction contravenes job descriptions and career planning advice, suggesting that independent introverts are better suited for IT work. Given that adult personality is antecedent to work experiences, it was suggested that future research proposing to show the effects of work-related factors such as pay and challenge on job or career satisfaction should first control for personality traits. Other practical and theoretical implications were noted.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the influence of employee positions (supervisor vs line-level employee) on work-related variables (e.g. work engagement, job satisfaction and turnover intentions). Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from line-level employees and supervisors of 29 mid- to up-scale hotels. A series of one-way ANCOVA were performed to test the position differences in work engagement, job satisfaction and turnover intentions. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine the moderating role of employees’ positions on the relationships between those variables. Findings Supervisors have significantly higher work engagement and lower turnover intentions than line-level employees, whereas job satisfaction does not differ across positions. Employee positions significantly moderate the relationship between absorption and job satisfaction, and the relationship between dedication and turnover intentions. Practical implications This study provides an in-depth analysis for hotel managers to capture work-related factors (i.e. work engagement, job satisfaction and turnover intentions) across employee positions. Dedication is the primary barometer that significantly leads to job satisfaction and reduced turnover intentions compared to vigor and absorption. Although job satisfaction may be boosted by improving employee work engagement (i.e. vigor, dedication and absorption), increasing absorption is not an effective solution to increase supervisors’ job satisfaction. Hotel managers need to carefully monitor supervisors’ levels of dedication, given its focal impact on turnover intentions. Originality/value This study is one of the first attempts to examine the differences between line-level employees’ and supervisors’ work engagement (i.e. vigor, dedication and absorption) and its consequences (i.e. job satisfaction and turnover intentions). Findings highlight the unique influence of the individual dimension of work engagement on job satisfaction and turnover intentions. This study reveals the moderating effect of employee positions on the links between engagement dimensions and consequences.

Background: Nursing practice takes place in a social framework, in which environmental elements and interpersonal relations interact. Ethical climate of the work unit is an important element affecting nurses’ professional and ethical practice. Nevertheless, whatever the environmental circumstances, nurses are expected to be professionally competent providing high-quality care ethically and clinically. Aim: This study examined newly graduated nurses’ perception of the ethical climate of their work environment and its association with their self-assessed professional competence, turnover intentions and job satisfaction. Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational research design was applied. Participants consisted of 318 newly graduated nurses. Data were collected electronically and analysed statistically. Ethical considerations: Ethical approval and permissions to use instruments and conduct the study were obtained according to required procedures. Data were rendered anonymous to protect participant confidentiality. Completing the questionnaire was interpreted as consent to participate. Findings: Nurses’ overall perception of the ethical climate was positive. More positive perceptions related to peers, patients and physicians, and less positive to hospitals and managers. Strong associations were found between perceived ethical climate and self-assessed competence, turnover intentions in terms of changing job, and job satisfaction in terms of quality of care. Nurses at a higher competence level with positive views of job satisfaction and low turnover intentions perceived the climate significantly more positively. Conclusion: Nursing management responsible for and having the power to implement changes should understand their contribution in ethical leadership, as well as the multidimensional nature of nurses’ work environment and the interaction between work-related factors in planning developmental measures. Future research should focus on issues in nurse managers’ ethical leadership in creating ethical work environments. There is also a need for knowledge of newly graduated nurses’ views of factors which act as enhancers or barriers to positive ethical climates to develop. Interventions, continuing education courses, and discussions designed to promote positive ethical climates should be developed for managers, nurses, and multi-professional teams.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Decent Work Scale (DWS), a recently developed measure that assesses the psychological experience of the quality of one’s work life. The proposed five-factor structure was verified with a sample of 326 Turkish working adults. Consistent with previous research, a five-factor bifactor model showed best fit to the data. The results of multigroup confirmatory factor analysis showed that the structure of the instrument was invariant across gender, income, and social class groups. Convergent and discriminant validity were supported by positive correlations with person–organization fit, job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and work meaning and by negative correlations with withdrawal intentions. Evidence of predictive validity was obtained by regressing the five subscales on four outcome measures. These findings suggest that the Turkish version of the DWS can be used for assessing decent work among Turkish working adults and cross-cultural psychological research.

AbstractAs part of comprehensive research on the ethical climate in the Serbian tourism industry, this study examines the effects of selected predictors (job department, individual values and employees’ perspective) on the perception of ethical climate types as well as the relationship between the type of ethical climate, and job satisfaction. Additionally, this study tests these goals for both managers and their subordinates. Research was conducted in 2013, on a sample of 258 employees in different small and medium tourism organizations in Serbia. The findings revealed new information on both ethical climate and job satisfaction-related factors in small and medium tourism enterprises in a non-Western, transitional economy, where ethical behavior is influenced by constant social and economic changes. Several theoretical and managerial implications and future research opportunities were derived from the findings.

The aim of this study was to compare general practitioners/family doctors in different European countries to assess the psychosocial and work-related factors possibly contributing to burnout. The survey included questions on demographic-, work- and lifestyle-related job satisfaction (Yaman & Ungan, 2002a; Yayli, Yaman, & Yaman, 2003) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach & Jackson, 1986). Surveys were conducted in 13 European countries (Yaman & Soler, 2002b) with a response rate of 33%. The 1,503 respondents (833 males, 55.4%) had an average age of 45.6 (22–74) years. 44% scored high for emotional exhaustion, 37% for depersonalization, 31% for low personal accomplishment, with 12% scoring high for all three. High burnout in one or more dimensions was best predicted by a multivariate model including income, intention to change job (yes 1.89, no 0.82), satisfaction (0.58), increasing alcohol consumption (3.93), and use of psychotropic medication (2.08). High burnout in all dimensions was best predicted by a multivariate model including working weekends (1.77), job satisfaction (0.38), increasing smoking (2.38) and psychotropic medication use (2.23). Burnout seems to be a common problem in European general practitioners and family doctors. Future research is needed to develop models to describe the phenomenon and to identify causative factors and effective intervention strategies.

Work engagement has been widely studied in organizational research owing to its impact on organizational behaviors and outcomes. We proposed and tested a mediation model that examine within-individual level job crafting and work engagement relationships between job autonomy and job satisfaction. We collected multilevel data using repeated measurement design and 119 participants and 1190 data points at within-individual level. To analyze hypotheses, we use multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM). The results showed that within-individual level job crafting positively related to work engagement. Also, job crafting and work engagement mediated the relationship between job autonomy and job satisfaction. Implications of these results for theory, practice and directions for future research are discussed.

Although scholars have paid increasing attention to people with callings, relationships between leader's calling and follower's job attitudes have been understudied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between leader calling and follower job satisfaction, and mediators and a moderator on the relationship. We hypothesized that leader calling would be positively related to follower job satisfaction via follower's perceived transformational leadership and occupational self-efficacy and that the two mediators would be positively related. As a boundary condition, we tested a moderating role of job crafting on the positive relationship between leader calling and follower occupational self-efficacy. To examine the hypotheses, we conducted two survey studies using a sample of 242 Korean working adults (Study 1) and a sample of 221 American working adults in diverse industries (Study 2). We found a positive relationship between leader calling and follower job satisfaction (Study 1) and a significant mediating effect of transformational leadership on the relationship (Studies 1, 2). In both studies, follower occupational self-efficacy mediated the link between transformational leadership and follower job satisfaction rather than directly mediating the relationship between leader calling and follower job satisfaction. Also, when followers were highly involved in job crafting (Study 1) and cognitive crafting (Study 2), their occupational self-efficacy did not vary depending on the level of leader calling. Interestingly, the relationship between leader calling and follower occupational self-efficacy was negative when followers showed low levels of job crafting and cognitive crafting. We discuss the implications of these results, study limitations, and practical suggestions for future research.

Abstract. This research redefined the job demands–resources (JD-R) job crafting model ( Tims & Bakker, 2010 ) to resolve theoretical and empirical inconsistencies regarding the crafting of job demands and developed a German version of the Job Crafting Scale (JCS; Tims, Bakker, & Derks, 2012 ) in two separate studies (total N = 512). In Study 1 the German version of the JCS was developed and tested for its factor structure, reliability, and construct validity. Study 2 dealt with the validity of our redefined JD-R job crafting model. The results show that, like the original version, the German version comprises four job crafting types, and the German version of the JCS is a valid and reliable generic measure that can be used for future research with German-speaking samples. Evidence for the redefined JD-R job crafting model was based on findings relating job crafting to work engagement and emotional exhaustion.
