Blocked by YouTube? Unseen digital intermediaries for social imaginaries in the Asia Pacific

YouTube is one of the most utilised online content sharing sites, enabling commercial enterprise, education opportunities, and facilities for vernacular creativity. Its user engagement demonstrates online community development; alongside its use as a distribution platform to monetise one’s branded self. However, as a subset of Alphabet Incorporated, its access is often restricted by governments of Asian Pacific countries. This research describes how countries that have banned YouTube still have exceptionally strong online communities, bringing into question the sorts of augmentations used by its participants. This article focuses on digital intermediation strategies, specifically the DIY approach of community building through the use of unseen infrastructures. This comparative study of YouTube channels in several Asia Pacific countries highlights the techniques that bypass limiting infrastructures to boost online community activity. The results demonstrate digital intermediation provides unique opportunities for key agents to contribute to strengthening social imaginaries within the Asia Pacific region.

The Asia-Pacific region is one of the most important “poles” of world economic development, but the region lacks a mechanism for regional integration and coordination to counter challenges and risks. ASEAN is the earliest example of integration in the region. Thanks to the active promotion and efforts of this organization regional integration in East Asia has formed a new development model, which gives a new idea for the development of regional integration in the Asia-Pacific region.

Since late 80-s of XX century active integration processes are undergoing in the Asia-Pacific region. Asian countries are trying to minimize the negative effects of the shocking changes in the system of international relations and of the global or regional economic crises. United States are quite actively involved in the regional integration. By using the “old” and creating “new” associations USA try to oppose the growing influence of China here. Russia, for its part, is also looking for the effective ways to connect to the Asian integration projects that can improve the socio-economic situation of the population of the Far East and will enable us to make a significant contribution to the development of economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Australia's economic future depends on policies to achieve economic allies and prosperity within the Asia—Pacific region. To do this more than expanding primary exports is needed, because the growth rate of primary industry is relatively low. There are already countries in the Asia—Pacific region who have specialised in secondary industry, but Australia is well placed to specialise in leisure and tourism and also in the information industry, meaning not computing but consulting work and research.

Resumen: En este documento, se presenta un panorama general del dinamismo exportador de productos agroalimentarios que ha mantenido el estado de Sonora durante los últimos años. Se hace especial énfasis en los productos de exportación que están teniendo presencia significativa en la región Asia-Pacífico, en particular, los derivados del segmento de carnes. Asimismo, se destacan algunas de las perspectivas más inmediatas de dicho proceso, tomando en cuenta el escenario de las principales Fortalezas / debilidades y oportunidades / amenazas que condicionan su desarrollo, en un contexto de creciente globalización de la producción y los mercados. In the same way, it points out the most inmediate perspectives in such a process, taking into consideration the scenario of the main strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats conditioning its development, in a growing globalization production and market context. Functional beverages have gained increasing market share over the last decade. As the Asia Pacific region is one of the largest and most important markets for functional foods, it is critical when developing and promoting new products that food manufacturers/marketers have a good understanding of the Asia Pacific market, including the legislative requirements and consumers’ perceptions of functional beverages. A literature review was undertaken to elucidate legislation criteria and consumers’ perceptions of functional beverages in Asia Pacific countries. Topics reviewed included the origin and definitions of functional foods and beverages; the legislative criteria for functional foods and beverages in four representative countries—Australia, New Zealand, China, and Japan; and consumers’ perceptions of functional beverages. There was no concrete definition of “functional food” or “functional beverage” region-wide and correspondingly, the legislative terms and regulatory frameworks for functional foods and beverages varied from country to country and showed divergence due to cultural differences. The systematic review of consumer perceptions of functional beverages showed that product acceptance and purchase intention for different functional beverages was heterogeneous among consumers in the Asian Pacific Region, with many factors playing a role including product attributes (e.g., functional attributes, sensory attributes, and product form) and consumer perceptions (e.g., health motivation, trust in food industry, and food neophobia). The findings from this review will help guide product development and inform marketing strategies for functional beverages targeting the Asia Pacific region by providing information on legislation and consumers’ perceptions.
