Analyzing Visual Search Techniques using Eye Tracking for a Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) Task

A challenge with current Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) systems includes patient identification errors, i.e. when an incorrect patient’s record is referenced. These types of errors can lead to patient safety issues such as administrating medication to the incorrect patient. Eye tracking technology can provide insights into the visual search patterns of healthcare professionals and shed light on how patient identification errors occur. This study investigates whether there are differences in visual search metrics, response time, and accuracy when searching for a patient by two identifiers – name or date of birth – from a list of patients with similar names. The findings revealed there was no effect of search strategy on speed or accuracy; however, there was an effect on fixation duration and number of fixations within specific areas of interest. Across both search strategies, there were more fixations on names. This demonstrates the importance of a patient’s name regardless of search strategy and is an important consideration to take into account if multiple patients share the same name. This study shows that eye tracking technology can be used to investigate the visual search patterns employed during patient identification and provide insights as to how patient identification errors occur. It also demonstrates a need to develop alternative methods to prevent patient identification errors apart from relying on healthcare professionals to verify patient identity.

Multimedia students’ dependence on information from the outside world can have an impact on their ability to identify and locate information from multiple resources in learning environments and thereby affect the construction of mental models. Field dependence-independence has been used to assess the ability to extract essential information from the environment. This study utilized eye-tracking technology to explore whether field-dependent and field-independent (FI) learners differed in their visual searching efficiency and multimedia learning performance. The FI learners outperformed field-dependent learners in posttest indices. In addition, FI learners were better able to identify visual cues and demonstrated efficient visual search patterns when learning using different information formats. The research findings echoed previous findings: The dependence on information in the context of learning can affect learners’ visual search efficiency and learning performance. The findings of this study suggest that adaptable learning environments that provide a rich variety of media may benefit learners with different levels of information-dependence. Applying eye-tracking technology enabled blueprints to be created pertaining to the learners’ information processing. However, additional research techniques, such as think-aloud exercises, would enable deeper understanding of how learners construct mental models of a knowledge base in a multimedia learning environment.

Abstract Background: Apart from a straight-forward and intuitive operability an appealing design determines the success of a website equally well. For this reason, the selection of images and navigation bars plays a determining role. The eye tracking method proved to be appropriate in order to verify the usability of websites. Objectives: The aim of the study was to improve the usability of the website of an educational institute for trainees as target group. Methods/Approach: For this purpose, the use of an eye-tracking technology was combined with a survey. The eye-tracking study was implemented task-oriented. Test persons were asked to search for particular courses within this institute. Results: This approach in combination with a subsequent questionnaire resulted in tangible indications of search patterns of the test group. Furthermore, their perception and their appraisal of the usability as well as the web design was analysed. Even though most tasks were accomplished effectively and efficiently with a positive user feedback, a potential for improvement was detected, in particular with regard to the images and the location of the search field. Conclusions: The selected choice of methods enables researchers and web designers to derive recommendations for the orientation, structure, optimisation and comprehensibility of a website.

Evaluation of sustainability after quality improvement (QI) projects in healthcare settings is an essential part of monitoring and future QI planning. With limitations in adopting quasi-experimental study design in real-world practice, healthcare professionals find it challenging to present the sustained effect of QI changes effectively. To provide quantitative methodological approaches for demonstrating the sustainability of QI projects for healthcare professionals, we conducted data analyses based on a QI project to improve the computerized provider order entry system to reduce patients’ dosing frequencies in Korea. Data were collected for 5 years: 24-month pre-intervention, 12-month intervention, and 24-month post-intervention. Then, analytic approaches including control chart, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and segmented regression were performed. The control chart intuitively displayed how the outcomes changed over the entire period, and ANOVA was used to test whether the outcomes differed between groups. Last, segmented regression analysis was conducted to evaluate longitudinal effects of interventions over time. We found that the impact of QI projects in healthcare settings should be initiated following the Plan–Do–Study–Act cycle and evaluated long-term effects while widening the scope of QI evaluation with sustainability. This study can serve as a guide for healthcare professionals to use a number of statistical methodologies in their QI evaluations.

The X-ray screening systems operators’ professional training is based on the CBT (computer-based training) principle, which has algorithms of adaptive training. These algorithms in existing computer simulators include feedback mechanisms on the basis of trainability exponents – such as the frequency of detecting dangerous objects, the frequency of false alarms and detection time. Further enhancement of the operators’ simulator training effectiveness is associated with the integration of psychophysiological mechanisms providing monitoring of their functional state. Based on the analysis of the particularities of x-ray screening systems operators’ professional training associated with the formation of competences in dangerous objects visual search, the most perspective method is the Eye tracking technology. Domestic and foreign studies of the eye movements characteristics while solving professional tasks in training process are actively developed in various areas. There are no studies of visual search peculiarities in domestic practice in contrast to exterior studies. This research is aimed at considering the usage of Eye tracking technology in the training of x-ray screening systems operators. As the result of the experimental research with the use of mobile eye-tracker Sensomotoric Instruments Eye Tracking Glasses 2.0 the statistical data of eye movement parameters of two groups of subjects with different levels of training have been received. The application of cluster and discriminant analyses methods allowed to identify General classes of these parameters, as well as to obtain the discriminants functions for each group under examination. The theoretical significance of the peculiarities of the operators’ eye movement studies is to identify the patterns of prohibited items visual search. The practical importance of implementation of Eye tracking technology and statistical analysis methods is to increase the reliability of assessment the level of formed competence of x-ray screening systems’ operators in visual search, as well as to develop the potential system of operators’ state monitoring and assessing their visual fatigue.

Abstract Importance and Objectives As health information technologies become more prevalent in physician workflow, it is increasingly important to understand how physicians are using and interacting with these systems. This includes understanding how physicians search for information presented through health information technology systems. Eye tracking technologies provide a useful technique to understand how physicians visually search for information. However, analyzing eye tracking data can be challenging and is often done by measuring summative metrics, such as total time looking at a specific area and first-order transitions. Methods In this paper, we propose an algorithmic approach to identify different visual search patterns. We demonstrate this approach by identifying common visual search patterns from physicians using a simulated prototype emergency department patient tracking system. Results and Conclusions We evaluate and compare the visual search pattern results to first-order transition results. We discuss the benefits and limitations of this approach and insights from this initial evaluation.

The visual search strategies employed by gymnastic coaches with different levels of expertise were investigated. Expert ( n = 3) and novice coaches ( n = 3) watched 9 video sequences of 3 gymnastic techniques and were required to highlight errors in performance. Visual search patterns were monitored by an ASL-5000SE eye-tracking system during observation. Expert participants showed longer and fewer visual fixations than the novice group.

Purpose This research note reports on how small changes to the organization of a simulated display for augmentative and alternative communication influence the visual search patterns of individuals with Down syndrome or autism, as measured through eye tracking technologies. Prior research had demonstrated that clustering symbols by their internal color facilitates search and reduces attention to distracters, in children with typical development. This research systematically replicated the procedures with individuals with Down syndrome or autism spectrum disorder. Method Participants engaged in a visual search task on a monitor with embedded automated eye tracking technology. Patterns of gaze during search were measured via this technology. Results Participants were significantly faster to fixate on the target and to select it with the mouse when the like-colored symbols were clustered together. In addition, participants were significantly less likely to fixate on distracters in the clustered condition. No group differences were found. Conclusions Small changes to the organization of the simulated augmentative and alternative communication display resulted in substantial differences in eye gaze and speed to find a target. Of greatest clinical import is the finding that clustering symbols reduced attention to distracters, given that individuals with disabilities may be prone to distraction.
