Social media as third spaces? Exploring Muslim identity and connection in Tumblr

Third spaces have been imagined as sites of resistance, where hegemonic and normative understandings of the world may be challenged. New media are often imagined to have this liberatory potential as well, particularly for those individuals who experience social, cultural, or political marginalization. This research considers whether social media might help facilitate third spaces. It takes as a case for exploring this topic the experience of 188 Muslim bloggers in social networking site Tumblr. Many of these individuals live in non-Muslim majority countries and say they sometimes feel stuck between identities. The qualitative analysis of their blogs, as well as interviews with 30 of the bloggers, seeks to understand how Tumblr can facilitate third spaces where these bloggers can explore the hybrid nature of their identities while connecting to others who share that experience.

The paper is an attempt to study the online participation behavior of youth in Assam in organizing social and political protests through Social media. During several protest demonstrations and rallies which took place in the middle of the year, 2012; there has been a series of cyber activism that took place prior to the street demonstrations and rallies. The paper attempts to justify the fact that, the street demonstrations and rallies which took place during that particular period, gained its momentum largely through Social Media. Therefore the period can be regarded as the beginning of cyber activism in Assam, since such online activities in publicizing and organizing any collective action in the physical world with regards to activism was not seen in the past. Based on the data collected through onsite surveys, such online communities have considerably given rise to new forms of collective action such as on/offline social and political protest in Assam through social media by publicizing and organizing people where the predominance of the youths is distinctly visible. It is seen that, there has been an increasing number of cyber activism among the online ‘Assamese’ youth communities which has apparently given raise to cyber-civil societies in urban areas. The predominance of youth in such protests is visible, since the use of social media has become a popular culture among the youth.  About 17% of the Indian populations are between 15 and 24 and they are experiencing the changes brought by the New Media technology. In examining the practices on social media, authors focus primarily on “Facebook”, which is the most popular social networking site in social media. Series of protest took place in the months of July, August and September, 2012 against unethical media practices; particularly the television media in Assam. Eventually protests against the insecurity of the women in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam and protest against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam were also demonstrated on the streets of Assam which gathered huge civic support. Few youth groups from Assam were also established who organized themselves through social networking sites to raise street demonstrations, along with certain other political parties, NGOs and offline civil society groups. The paper mainly studies the participation of youth in such protests and reflects on the case studies which can be regarded as the beginning of youth cyber activism that apparently gained momentum through social media in Assam.

With large social media platforms coming under increasing pressure to deplatform far-right users, the Alternative Technology movement (Alt-Tech) emerged as a new digital support infrastructure for the far right. We conduct a qualitative analysis of the prominent Alt-Tech platform Gab, a social networking service primarily modelled on Twitter, to assess the far-right virtual community on the platform. We find Gab’s technological affordances – including its lack of content moderation, culture of anonymity, microblogging architecture and funding model – have fostered an ideologically eclectic far-right community united by fears of persecution at the hands of ‘Big Tech’. We argue that this points to the emergence of a novel techno-social victimology as an axis of far-right virtual community, wherein shared experiences or fears of being deplatformed facilitate a coalescing of assorted far-right tendencies online.

Technology is developing rapidly, technology products are created to provide convenience to the community, which is new media. When through the development of technology, the spread of comics is also widely spread, comics that were originally using print media are now developing using digital media. To disseminate comic content, digital comic authors now using social media to promote their comics to a large extent. So digital comic authors need a strategy to disseminate digital comic content, attract readers, and get collaborative offers to raise their name. In this research the authors used a descriptive qualitative analysis method, to find out the strategies used by Ghosty's comic authors in spreading, and raising their names. The author collected data by interviewing the author of Ghosty's Comic, and his friends at once readers to get the data needed in this research. The results of this reserach illustrate that it is important to use strategies to create interesting digital comic content so that the Ghosty's comics can get collaborations such as Tokopedia, Orang Tua Group, Line Webtoon.Teknologi berkembang dengan pesat, banyak produk teknologi diciptakan untuk memberikan kemudahan pada masyarakat, salah satunya adalah media baru. Saat melalui perkembangan teknologi medium penyebaran komik juga meluas, komik yang semula menggunakan media cetak kini berkembang menggunakan media digital. Untuk menyebarkan konten komik, pengarang komik digital kini menggunakan media sosial untuk mempromosikan komiknya ke kalangan yang luas. Maka pengarang komik digital memerlukan sebuah strategi untuk melakukan penyebaran konten komik digital, menarik pembaca, dan mendapatkan tawaran kolaborasi untuk membesarkan namanya. Pada penelitian ini penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif analisis,  untuk mengetahui strategi yang digunakan pengarang komik Ghosty’s dalam menyebarkan, dan membesarkan namanya. Penulis mengumpulkan data dengan melakukan wawancara dengan pengarang komik Ghosty’s, dan teman sekaligus pembacanya untuk mendapatkan data yang diperlukan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil dari penelitian ini menggambarkan bahwa pentingnya menggunakan strategi untuk membuat konten komik digital yang menarik sehingga dengan besarnya nama komik Ghosty’s bisa mendapatkan kolaborasi seperti Tokopedia, Orang Tua Group, Line Webtoon.

Purpose: A Social Networking Site (also social networking service or social media) is a platform to make people connected and share anything about them. The purpose of this research to construct a framework for the Development of Social Networking Site Skill to help women in rural areas to face the growth of ICT. This paper discusses how the proposed framework can help them to develop their skills of marketing using the SNS. This kind of effort, hopefully could empower the targeted marginalized group with the knowledge of information engineering, increase their awareness and utilization of ICT in their everyday actions. Methodology: The data obtained are the result of on-going projects in Setiu Wetlands, Terengganu.  Community rural women in Setiu Wetlands are respondent for this study. A total of 30 people (identified as women entrepreneurs) were respondents and profile data was preliminary studies about the skills and existing ICT literacy and internet use. Main Findings: Based on profiling data that have been collected, a framework for the development of skills in using social media as a business medium has been developed. Implications/Applications: The framework developed is expected to produce successful entrepreneurs from rural women communities. The entrepreneur will be an example to other women. This effort also is expected to help rural women community can improve the living standards of their families.

Facebook, like any other social networking site, troubles the traditional categories of private and public spheres. As it complicates (and transcends) the distinction, it can be called a different space, or a liminal space, which falls somewhere in-between private and public spheres. The author argues that this recognition of Facebook as a liminal sphere has important implications to the (re) definition of public and private spheres and to the ways rhetoric should work or be used in the Web 2.0 sites like Facebook. The author also proposes that Michael de Certeau's notions of “strategy” and “tactics” can be powerful rhetorical tools to deal with Facebook's liminality and to enhance the rhetorical performance of self in Facebook and other similar new media forums.

The authors discuss the NetLab Network – an interdisciplinary network studying the intersection of social networks, communication networks, and computer networks. It has developed since 2000 from an informal network of collaborators into a far flung virtual laboratory with members from across Canada and the United States as well as from Chile, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. Connecting them is a shared sensibility of interpreting behavior from a social network perspective rather than seeing the world as composed of bounded groups, tree-like hierarchies, or aggregates of disconnected individuals. NetLab's researchers focus on the interplay between social and technological links, social capital in job searches and business settings, new media and community, internet and personal relations, social media, households, networked organizations, and knowledge transfer. NetLab has had two main achievements: first, its researchers make substantive contributions to the issues they study, and second, they demonstrate that this model of scholarly collaboration works.

One degree out from an image “selfie” are text-based self-generated user profiles (self-portrayals) on social media platforms; these are self-depictions of the individual as he or she represents to the world. This work-based self-representation must be sufficiently convincing of professionalism and ethics to encourage other professionals to collaborate on shared work projects through co-creation, support, attention, or other work. While project-based track records may carry the force of fact, there are often more subtle messages that have high impact on distant collaborations. One such important dimension is “indirect reciprocity,” or whether the target individual treats collaborators with respect and care and returns altruistic acts with their own acts of altruism. This work describes some analyses of professional profiles on social media platforms (email, social networking, and microblogging) for indicators of indirect reciprocity.

Digital technology is at the forefront of transforming how governments operate around the world. Using Brunei's Information Department (InfoDept) as a case study, this chapter looks at how the agency has evolved from its inception in the 1950s to 2019 in its embrace of both old and new media to pursue its mission and objectives as a government-run media agency. The results demonstrate how new media, such as social media, can complement old media if done right. The case study on InfoDept contributes to the growing field of research related to the increased advancement, development, application, and impact of new technologies in bolstering the digital governance process. This chapter also provides strong evidence on how governments can improve its general governance process and unlock the digital dividend in the 21st century by incorporating new media into its public policy architectonic. Salient lessons for policymakers and practitioners on digital governance have also been presented in this chapter.
