Resourceful parents and grandparents in Shanghai go a long way in search of safe and healthy food for the children of their families. From an ethnographical perspective, this article delves into the risk of eating in everyday family life in urban China, and it investigates the complexity of navigating the urban food market and trusting advice from Internet sources, mommy groups, friends, and family members in order to avoid often incomprehensible health risks posed by polluted or chemically treated foods. It describes how family caregivers feel a moral obligation of doing their best to handle food risks in everyday life, and how they exchange practical knowledge in private networks. It argues that food risks are tackled with individual strategies aiming towards a feeling of peace of mind ( fangxin), and that buying, preparing, and eating safe food is a moral issue within the family.

The article presents two letters from V.A. Musin-Pushkin which he wrote to his bride shortly before the wedding in 1828 (the letters are kept in the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts). The text of the letters reflects the context of the time and everyday life, the system of views and the peculiarities of the worldview of a young aristocrat, the specific features of intra-family interaction in the field of feelings, marriage, human relations which inevitably turn out to be associated with the concepts of the family honor, family duty, the need to preserve the status of a noble family. The author traces how the power hierarchy is manifested at the level of relations within a close circle of relatives, as well as how traditional patterns are combined with new elements. Vladimir Alekseevich Musin-Pushkin, the youngest son of the archaeographer Count A.I. Musin-Pushkin, was arrested in connection with the case of the Decembrists, transferred from the Guards to the army and exiled to serve in Finland, where he met his future wife, Emilia Karlovna Shernval von Wallen. The article provides details of the family life of this married couple, as well as private facts from the biography of some other members of the Musin-Pushkin family.

Authors:Henry Brodaty, Megan Heffernan, Gavin Andrews, Kaarin Anstey, Maria Fiatarone Singh, Louisa Jorm, Nicola Lautenschlager, Anthony Maeder, John McNeill, Perminder Sachdev, Michael Valenzuela, Maintain Your Brain Collaborative Team.Abstract:In the absence of disease modifying interventions for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementias there is an increased interest in dementia prevention. An issue for population-based lifestyle preventative approaches is scalability. An internet-based multicomponent Maintain Your Brain (MYB) randomised trial is currently underway.Invitations to participate in Maintain Your Brain were emailed or mailed to people aged 55-77 years from the 45 and Up study, a population-based cohort study of one in ten people aged 45 years and older (n = 267,000). To be enrolled into the study participants were required to have risk factors that made them eligible for at least one of the available modules. Modules were designed to address physical inactivity and health risks associated with inactivity (Physical Activity), adherence to a Mediterranean-type diet and health risks associated with poor nutrition (Nutrition), cognitive activity (Brain Training) and mental wellbeing (Peace of Mind).During recruitment 96,418 invitations were sent and 14,064 (14%) provided consent. Of those who completed baseline over 90% were eligible for at least two modules of the intervention. Overall, 6,236 (44%) were enrolled resulting in an overall recruitment rate of 6%, or 50% of those eligible at screening. The final sample was 64% female with a mean age of 64.9yrs (SD = 5.8, range 55-77 yrs) and mean years of education of 12.9yrs (SD = 3.0, range 2-22 yrs).Recruitment rates in MYB were comparable to other clinical trials targeting older people and who included online recruitment strategies. This is promising for the willingness of participants to engage with trials that use online rather than traditional in-person methods. Although the baseline withdrawal number (3%) remained stable after randomisation (4%), a further 25% of participants did not attempt any activities. These rates continued at the annual assessments when 4% withdrew, 31% completed no follow-up activities, 14% partially completed and 55% completed all.Online lifestyle interventions have capacity to reach broad segments of the 55-77 year old population, the majority of whom may benefit from support activities shown to be effective in reducing risk of cognitive decline and ultimately delay onset of dementia. The challenge with this new approach is encouraging continued engagement with the program over time.

This paper tries to critically analyse Jeffrey Alexander?s cultural sociology. In the first part of the paper I will examine Alexander?s conception of hermeneutical structuralism which argues that conventional systemic sociology and richness of experience found in everyday praxis can be reconciled. In the next section I will provide a critique of this kind of approach to social theory and maintain that Alexander?s sociology is, in principle, reductionist regarding everyday life. In addition, I will also point out some of the comparative advantages that pragmatically oriented theory has in the attempt of integrating theoretical and practical knowledge. In the final section of the paper, I will try to illustrate some of the major shortcomings of Alexander?s sociology on the concrete example of advances in computer technology.

SummaryThe aim of this investigation was to identify the parasites present in the largely understudied pleasure oyster Crassostrea corteziensis in Sinaloa state in the northwestern Mexican Pacific coast. Inspection of twenty-eight oysters collected on “Ceuta” lagoon revealed the presence of the digenean Stephanostomum sp. (Digenea: Acanthocolpidae) cysts. Metacercariae were found encapsulated and embedded in the digestive gland and mantle tissue of oysters. The prevalence of infection revealed that 84.6 % were infected, the abundance was 13.62, with a mean intensity of 16.09 per host. The members of this genus are characterized by a double crown of spines in the cephalic region surrounding the buccal opening of the worm. Significantly, we report the first incidence of the digenean Stephanostomum sp of the family Acanthocolpidae parasitizing Crassostrea corteziensis. Further we report that this bivalve is now considered a new intermediate host, and the northwestern Mexican Pacific coast is a new geographical distribution area for this digenean. The findings contribute to our understanding of the biology, biodiversity and host preference of these parasites, with implications for health risks posed by human consumption of the pleasure oyster.
