The essential oil of Cordia verbenacea D.C. (Boraginaceae) that grows in Mérida-Venezuela was obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of the plant, yielding 0.21%. The oil was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Thirty one components which made up 94.3% of the oil were identified. The most abundant constituents found were: tricyclene (23.9%), bicyclogermacrene (11.7%), germacrene D (9.9%) and β-caryophyllene (8.2%). Antibacterial activity determination was carried out according to the disc diffusion assay. Activity against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, at a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 170 μg/mL and 200 μg/mL, was found.

Hyptis colombiana is an aromatic shrub native to the Colombian and Venezuelan Andes. Aerial parts were collected in Mérida State at about 3100 m above sea level in February 2005, and May and October 2006. The essential oil was found to contain germacrene D and β-caryophyllene as main constituents (about 50%). The February 2005 and October 2006 oils were found to have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, but not the May 2006 oil, probably due to the lack of some minor constituent.

The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of Carapa guianensis Aubl. (Meliaceae) leaves was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Twenty-three components were identified, which made up 93.7% of the oil. The most abundant constituents were bicyclogermacrene (28.5%), α-humulene (17.2%), germacrene B (11.9%), and trans-β-caryophyllene (9.9%). Antimicrobial activity of the essential oil, as well as the crude extracts of the leaves obtained by refluxing the dried leaves with n-hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol, was determined using the disc diffusion assay. Activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29923 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 was only found for the essential oil and the methanolic extract, at minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 400 μg/mL and 50 μg/mL.

The essential oil from the leaves of Baccharis trinervis (Lam.) Pers., collected in May 2006, was analyzed by GC/MS. A yield of 0.2% oil was obtained by hydrodistillation. Forty three components were identified by comparison of their mass spectra with those in the Wiley GC-MS Library data base. The major components were germacrene D (20.4%), limonene (15.4%), δ-cadinene (5.2%), β-caryophyllene (4.8%), α-pinene (4.5%) and bicyclogermacrene (4.0%). The essential oil showed antibacterial activity against the important human pathogenic Gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, with MIC values of 80 and 200 μg/mL, respectively.

The essential oil from the leaves of Monticalia andicola Turcz., collected in November 2008, was analyzed by GC/MS. A yield of 0.15% oil was obtained by hydrodistillation. Thirty-six components were identified by comparison of their mass spectra with those in the Wiley GC-MS Library data base. The major components were α-pinene (19.6%), β-pinene (10.5%), α-longipinene (6.5%), δ-3-carene (6.2%), cyperene (5.4%) and β-phellandrene (5.2%). The antibacterial activity of the essential oil was evaluated against Gram- positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25992, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 23357, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) bacteria, using the disc diffusion agar method. The results showed a broad spectrum of activity with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 10 to150 μg/mL.

The volatile compounds obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Rosmarinus tournefortii De Noé. growing wild in the occidental region of Algeria were analyzed by GC/MS. Thirty-six compounds were characterized representing 95.6% of the essential oil, with camphor (37.6%), 1,8-cineole (10.0%), p-cymene-7-ol (7.8%), and borneol (5.4%) as the major components. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against three pathogenic bacteria: Gram-negative ( Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive ( Staphylococcus aureus). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC; mg/mL) was determined by sub-culture on Muller Hinton agar plates. The essential oil exhibited strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa, and was also active against Staphylococcus aureus.

A series of pyrazoles derived from the substituted enaminones were synthesized and were evaluated for antimicrobial activity. All the compounds were characterized by the spectral data and elemental analysis. The synthesized compounds were initially screened for their antimicrobial activity against ATCC 6538, NCTC 10400, NCTC 10418, and ATCC 27853. During initial screening, compounds (P1, P6, and P11) presented significant antimicrobial activity through disc diffusion assay. These compounds were further evaluated for antimicrobial activity at different time points against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and presented significant activity for 6 hours. The activity was found to be greater against Gram-positive bacteria. In contrast at 24 hours, the activity was found only against Gram-positive bacteria except compound (P11), showing activity against both types of bacteria. Compound (P11) was found to have highest activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The essential oil of the leaves of Espeletia nana Cuatrec, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by GC-MS, which allowed the identification of 24 components, which made up 99.9% of the oil. The most abundant compounds were α-pinene (38.1%), β-pinene (17.2%), myrcene (15.0%), spathulenol (4.2%), bicyclogermacrene (4.0%), α-zingiberene (4.0%), and γhimachalene (3.7%). Antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using the agar disk diffusion method. Activity was observed only against Gram-positive bacteria. MIC values were determined for Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923(200 μg/mL) and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 (600 μg/mL).

The essential oil of the aerial parts of Anvillea radiata Coss. & Dur. was examined by GC-MS. Twenty-nine constituents were identified, representing 88.8% of the total. 6-Oxocyclonerolidol (66.6%) and 6-hydroxycyclonerolidol (11.4%) were found to be the major components. The disc diffusion method, used for antimicrobial activity testing, showed that the essential oil had a significant antibacterial activity against all tested microorganisms.

The essential oils from fresh aerial parts of Monticalia greenmaniana (Hieron) C. Jeffrey (Asteraceae) collected in March, were analyzed by GC/MS. Oil yields (w/v) of 0.1% (flowers), 0.07%, (stems) and 0.1% (leaves) were obtained by hydrodistillation. Thirteen, sixteen and eighteen components, respectively, were identified by comparison of their mass spectra with those in the Wiley GC-MS Library data base. The major components of the flower and stem oils were 1-nonane (38.8% flowers; 33.5% stems), α-pinene (29.0% flowers; 14.8% stems) and germacrene D (15.6% flowers; 18.6% stems). However, in the leaf oil, germacrene D was observed at 50.7%, followed by β-cedrene at 8.4 %. The leaf essential oil showed a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against the important human pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 19433), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 25955) with MIC values ranging from 75 to 6000 ppm.

 ABSTRACT The essential oil composition of the Toona sureni (Blume) Merr leaf was analyzed by GC-MS. More than 68 peaks, representing 99.99% of total oil, forty three components were identified, this represents 80.65% of the total oil component. The major components were α-terpinene (9.58%), α-copaene (8.39%), bicyclogermacrene (7.61%), δ-cadinene (6.65%), β-elemene (4.88%), germacrene-D (4.65%), δ-selinene (3.58%), caralene (3.10%), β-caryophyllene (2.88%), α-cubebene (2.82%), δ-gurjunene (2.20%), and (-)-isoledene (2.05%). The antibacterial activity of the essential oil of Toona sureni (Blume) Merr leaf was evaluated using disk diffusion method. The oil was effective on the inactivation of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. Keywords: Toona sureni (Blume) Merr, antibacterial activity, GC-MS, essential oil
