The essential oils from aerial parts and fruits of Anisosciadium orientale DC. growing wild in Iran were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Seventy-one compounds were identified in the fruit oil and fifteen in the oil from the aerial parts. The main oil components of the fruits and aerial parts were myristicin (33.5%-33.7%), α-terpinolene (22%-25.8%) and limonene (19.5%-19.7%). Some compounds, such as geranyl butyrate and germacrene-D, were only detected in the fruit oil.

Elsholtzia winitiana var. dongvanensis Phuong is a plant contains an essential oil characterized by an important chemical transformation. Essential oils were isolated from Elsholtzia winitiana var. dongvanensis Phuong flowers and aerial parts by hydrodistillation and analyzed for chemical constituents by GC-MS. Twenty-two components accounting for 99.99% of the total oil of flowers and twenty-three components accounting for 98.72 % of the total oil of aerial parts were identified. The composition of the essential oil contains aldehyde, aromatic ketone, monoterpenoid and secquiterpenoid. Major components found in two essential oil samples were andehyde, terpenoid, ketone benzaldehyde, germacrene D, E-caryphyllene and caryophyllene oxide. Moreover, essential oil sample isolated from flowers and aerial parts of E. winitiana var. dongvannensis was dominated by the high content of rosefuran (75.67%) and rosefuran epoxide (71.33%), respectively.

Protium aracouchini (Aubl.) Marchand [sin Icica aracouchini Aubl.], which occurs in the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve, in the Brazilian Amazon, was evaluated for the presence of galls, for resin exudation and the composition of the essential oils from the aerial parts and the resin. The experiment to stimulate the exudation of resin from the trunk was conducted using a 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid solution. The resin produced after 40 days and the aerial parts had their essential oils extracted in a Clevenger apparatus and the volatile chemical constituents were analyzed using GC/MS. The non-oxygenated sesquiterpenes α-copaene (21.15%) and α-gurjunene (13.69%), in addition to the oxygenated sesquiterpene spathulenol (10.32%), were detected as the majority constituents of the essential oil of the leaves, and a concentration similar to that of α-gurjunene was found in the branches (13.28%). The resin essential oil showed a high concentration of hydrocarbon monoterpenes (76.49%) with a predominance of α-pinene (17.57%) and limonene (46.11%). Four gall morphotypes were found associated with this species. The present study reports for the first time information on the volatile constituents and the resinous potential of P. aracouchini, and registers the morphotypes of the galls that help in the taxonomy of the species.

The composition of the essential oils of flowering aerial parts of Salvia samuelssonii Rech. fil. (Lamiaceae Section Aethiopis), collected in two different biogeographical regions, has been analyzed. Sample1, collected in a Mediterranean-like region, “As-Subayhi”, contains mainly monoterpenes (54.2%), sesquiterpenes (27.6%) and phenylpropanoids (10.5%), while sample 2, collected in the Irano-Turanian region, “Al-Adasiyyah”, contains mainly phenylpropanoids (30.6%), monoterpenes (24.9%) and sesquiterpenes (21.2%). In Sample1, the most representative constituents were sabinene (21.5%), cis-chrysanthenyl acetate (20.8%), germacrene D (9.3%) and myristicin (5.9%), while in sample 2, myristicin (24.1%), sclareoloxide (6.3%), and germacrene D (5.7%) were main constituents. The rate of oxygenated derivatives in the Irano-Turanian sample was higher than the Mediterranean sample. Myristicin is an unusual constituent of Salvia species.

Abstract Thirty-six compounds were identified from aerial parts of Solidago chilensis cultivated at PAF/FIOCRUZ campus in Rio de Janeiro city (RJ) using solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. These compounds are mainly non-oxygenated mono and sesquiterpenes. Germacrene D is the major compound of two the essential oil analyzed samples (12 to 23%) and of two of the volatiles samples analyzed by SPME (central stems and dry inflorescences samples). Limonene is the major compound in the fresh inflorescences sample (about 21%). The bornil acetate is present in both volatile fractions (16%) and essential oils (7-8%). All the essential oils samples evaluated shown a great antinociceptive activity, considering the used dose of the samples (1 mg/kg) and the standard substance (50 mg/kg). Solidago chilensis is one of Brazil arnicas and it is a medicinal plant widely used by the brazilian population. Other plants of the genus Solidago are also used in traditional medicine in North America and Europe. This is the first report of SPME analysis from Solidago genus and of the antinociceptive effect from Solidago chilensis essential oil.

The chemical constituents of essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from Zingiber vuquangensis Lý N.S., Lê T.H., Trịnh T. H., Nguyễn V.H., Đỗ N.Đ. and Zingiber castaneum Škorničk. & Q.B. Nguyễn collected from Vu Quang National Park, Hà Tĩnh Province, Vietnam were analysed by GC and GC-MS. β-Pinene (24.7% and 26.1%) and β-caryophyllene (12.3% and 13.9%) were the main constituents in the leaf oil and stem oil of Zingiber vuquangensis. On the other hand the root oil contained bornyl acetate (20.9%), zerumbone (14.1%) and α-humulene (9.6%) while β-pinene (19.6%), 1,8-cineole (15.6%), α-pinene (10.3%) and β-caryophyllene (10.4%) were the significant compounds of the fruit oil. The leaf oil Zingiber castaneum was dominated by β-pinene (30.6%), α-pinene (9.5%), β-caryophyllene (9.4%) and bicycloelemene (9.1%). The compounds occurring in higher quantity in the stem oil were β-caryophyllene (14.7%), δ-cadinene (9.8%), bicycloelemene (8.4%) and α-cubebene (7.8%). However, camphene (15.1%), 1,8-cineole (13.6%), linalool (11.3%) and δ-3-carene (8.5%) were the main compounds of the root oil while ( E)-nerolidol (23.2%), ( Z)-9-octadecenamide (17.3%) and β-caryophyllene (10.8%) were the main constituents of the fruit oil. The essential oil did not exhibit noticeable antimicrobial effects. This is the first report on the volatile compositions of Z. vuquangensis and Z. castaneum.

The leaf essential oils of twenty-three species of Lauraceae from Monteverde, Costa Rica, have been screened for inhibition of the cysteine protease cruzain. Of these, nine showed promising cruzain inhibitory activity (IC50 < 100 μg/mL), six showed marginal activity (IC50, 100–500 μg/mL), and eight were inactive (IC50 > 500 μg/mL). The cruzain inhibitory activities of the essential oils can be attributed to active sesquiterpenoid components as well as synergistic effects between two or more components. The sesquiterpenes α-copaene, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, and germacrene D are active (IC50 ~5–30 μg/mL) alone, but also show increased activity in combination with other essential oil components.

Cinnamomum bodinieriLevl is a fast-growing species in tropical forests and widely distributed in southern China, Rich essential oil is in the leaves, which can be utilized as folk medicine. The chemical constituents of the essential oil obtained from the leaves ofCinnamomum bodinieriLevl were analyzed by GC-MS-DS. Sixty-three constituents were identified in the essential oils and the main constituents of the essential oils were terpinoids. The principal components are (content): camphor (40.81%), cineole (24.87 %), α-terpneol (8.75%), β-pinene (5.17 %), α-caryophyllene (2.17 %), caryophyllene (2.14 %), α-pinene (1.57 %), p-menth-1-en-4-ol (1.28 %), germacrene D (1.18 %).

The volatile components of essential oils of fresh aerial parts from horseweed (Conyza canadensis) collected in October with hydrodistillation and steam distillation, respectively, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that limonene, β-pinene, trans-α-bergamotene, cis-β-ocimene, β-myrcene, germacrene D, 1,3,8-p-menthatriene, caryophyllene, (E)-β-farnesene, (Z)-β-farnesene, α-curcumene, caryophyllene oxide were the common volatile components in the essential oils between hydrodistillation and steam distillation. High limonene content (68.87%) was in the essential oil with hydrodistillation. Limonene or other terpenoids has the potential to develop as the biomimetic synthesis template for environmentally-friendly herbicide.

Protium ovatum is a Brazilian endemic species widely distributed between the Cerrado and Amazon biomes. Here, we evaluate the chemical composition of the essential oils (EO) of different shoot organs from P. ovatum including stems, petioles, leaves, flowers, ripe and unripe fruits, and investigate their antifungal potential against Sclerotinea sclerotiorum. The EO were obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus and analysed by GC-MS, followed by PCA analysis. The antifungal activity was performed by agar diffusion. Fruits had the highest essential oil contents among the shoot parts. The constituents were found varyingin the different organs: α-Pinene (0.80-18.3%), β-Pinene (0.58-5.17%), Myrcene (0.52-27.3%), Limonene (3.15-59.7%), Caryophyllene E (3.67-16.4%), Germacrene D (6.34-27.4%), and δ-Cadinene (2.29-7.63%). The essential oil from ripe fruit showed the strongest antifungal activity, with the highest Inhibition of Mycelial Growth (IMG) (50.11%) at the lowest concentration assayed (18.75μg.mL-1). This is the first report on the chemical composition of the essential oils from stems, petioles, flowers, and ripe fruits of P. ovatum and their antifungal activity against S. sclerotiorum, making it a potential source of antimicrobial agents

The aerial parts of Hypericum richeri Vill. subsp. grisebachii (Boiss.) Nyman were collected from two different locations in Croatia and subjected to hydrodistillation. GC/FID and GC/MS analysis of the isolated essential oils revealed 64 compounds representing 94.7% and 98.2% of the total oils. Predominant constituents in both samples were: germacrene D (10.9%; 6.0%), bicyclogermacrene (4.7%; 3.5%), α-pinene (6.8%; 6.9%), β-pinene (8.1%; 5.1%), decanoic acid (4.5%; 6.8%), β-caryophyllene (3.3%; 7.5%), δ-cadinene (7.0%; 4.4%), spathulenol (6.0%; 9.5%) and tetracosane (3.1%; 5.8%). Comparison of both samples revealed similarity in the chemical composition with minor fluctuations of constituent percentages. The chemical profile of Croatian oils was in general similar to those reported for other geographic areas regarding major mono- and sesquiterpene constituents. However, spathulenol, 5-cadinene and bicyclogermacrene were more abundant in Croatian oils. The presence of decanoic acid (4.5%; 6.8%) in Croatian oils was the major difference between acids and fatty acids derivatives. Higher abundance of alkanes (particularly tetracosane and docosane) was also noticed.
