Cinnamomum bodinieriLevl is a fast-growing species in tropical forests and widely distributed in southern China, Rich essential oil is in the leaves, which can be utilized as folk medicine. The chemical constituents of the essential oil obtained from the leaves ofCinnamomum bodinieriLevl were analyzed by GC-MS-DS. Sixty-three constituents were identified in the essential oils and the main constituents of the essential oils were terpinoids. The principal components are (content): camphor (40.81%), cineole (24.87 %), α-terpneol (8.75%), β-pinene (5.17 %), α-caryophyllene (2.17 %), caryophyllene (2.14 %), α-pinene (1.57 %), p-menth-1-en-4-ol (1.28 %), germacrene D (1.18 %).

The essential oils from aerial parts and fruits of Anisosciadium orientale DC. growing wild in Iran were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Seventy-one compounds were identified in the fruit oil and fifteen in the oil from the aerial parts. The main oil components of the fruits and aerial parts were myristicin (33.5%-33.7%), α-terpinolene (22%-25.8%) and limonene (19.5%-19.7%). Some compounds, such as geranyl butyrate and germacrene-D, were only detected in the fruit oil.

AbstractPolyalthia is one of the largest genera in the Annonaceae family, and has been widely used in folk medicine for the treatment of rheumatic fever, gastrointestinal ulcer, and generalized body pain. The present investigation reports on the extraction by hydrodistillation and the composition of the essential oils of four Polyalthia species (P. sumatrana, P. stenopetalla, P. cauliflora, and P. rumphii) growing in Malaysia. The chemical composition of these essential oils was determined by gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The multivariate analysis was determined using principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) methods. The results revealed that the studied essential oils are made up principally of bicyclogermacrene (18.8%), cis-calamenene (14.6%) and β-elemene (11.9%) for P. sumatrana; α-cadinol (13.0%) and δ-cadinene (10.2%) for P. stenopetalla; δ-elemene (38.1%) and β-cubebene (33.1%) for P. cauliflora; and finally germacrene D (33.3%) and bicyclogermacrene for P. rumphii. PCA score and HCA plots revealed that the essential oils were classified into three separated clusters of P. cauliflora (Cluster I), P. sumatrana (Cluster II), and P. stenopetalla, and P. rumphii (Cluster III) based on their characteristic chemical compositions. Our findings demonstrate that the essential oil could be useful for the characterization, pharmaceutical, and therapeutic applications of Polyalthia essential oil.

Elsholtzia winitiana var. dongvanensis Phuong is a plant contains an essential oil characterized by an important chemical transformation. Essential oils were isolated from Elsholtzia winitiana var. dongvanensis Phuong flowers and aerial parts by hydrodistillation and analyzed for chemical constituents by GC-MS. Twenty-two components accounting for 99.99% of the total oil of flowers and twenty-three components accounting for 98.72 % of the total oil of aerial parts were identified. The composition of the essential oil contains aldehyde, aromatic ketone, monoterpenoid and secquiterpenoid. Major components found in two essential oil samples were andehyde, terpenoid, ketone benzaldehyde, germacrene D, E-caryphyllene and caryophyllene oxide. Moreover, essential oil sample isolated from flowers and aerial parts of E. winitiana var. dongvannensis was dominated by the high content of rosefuran (75.67%) and rosefuran epoxide (71.33%), respectively.

The chemical constituents of essential oils extracted by hydrodistillation from Piper klotzschianum, P. hispidum, and P. arboreum, collected from the remaining Atlantic forest in Sergipe State, were characterized and submitted to cytotoxic and larvicidal activity assays. The major constituents identified (stems, fresh, and dried leaves) were ( E)-caryophyllene (16.8%) and bicyclogermacrene (21.6%). Germacrene D (22.8%) was identified only in P. klotzschianum and P. hispidum. A high percentage of β-pinene (27.2%) and α-pinene (7.2%) were present in P. klotzschianum stems and δ-3-carene in the fresh and dried leaves of P. hispidum (17.4% and 19.1%, respectively). Piper klotzschianum showed the best cytotoxic activity, inhibiting human hepatocellular carcinoma (27.3 µg/mL), human promyelocytic leukemia (33.8 µg/mL), and murine melanoma (37.9 µg/mL) cell lines. Larvicidal activity was also tested and the essential oil from the dried leaves of P. klotzschianum was the most potent against Aedes aegypti larvae, with an LC50 value of 122.4 µg/mL.

Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from needles, dry needles, inflorescences and resin of Pinus caribaea Morelet were analyzed by GC-MS. Seven chemical constituents in oil of needles, 13 in dry needles, 4 in inflorescences and 6 in resin were identified. The major constituents found in the needle oil are limonene, caryophyllene and germacrene D in the dry needle oil limonene, caryophyllene oxide and caryophyllene in the inflorescences oil caryophyllene oxide, limonene and crypton and in the resin oil bicyclo[3.1.1]hept -2-ene, 2,6,6- trimethyl- (52.82%), longifolen, crypton and β-pinene. As part of our evaluation of essential oils derived from Native American medicinal plants, we have obtained the essential oils of Agastache foeniculum (Pursch) Kuntze (Lamiaceae), Gaultheria procumbens L. (Ericaceae), Heliopsis helianthoides (L.) Sweet (Asteraceae), Liatris spicata (L.) Willd. (Asteraceae), Pycnanthemum incanum (L.) Michx. (Lamiaceae), Smallanthus uvedalia (L.) Mack. ex Mack. (Asteraceae), and Verbena hastata L. (Verbenaceae) by hydrodistillation. The essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatographic techniques. The essential oil of A. foeniculum was dominated by estragole (88–93%), while methyl salicylate (91%) dominated the G. procumbens essential oil. Germacrene D was the major component in H. helianthoides (42%) and L. spicata (24%). 1,8-Cineole (31%) and α-terpineol (17%) were the main compounds in P. incanum essential oil. The essential oil of S. uvedalia showed α-pinene (24%), perillene (15%), and β-caryophyllene (17%) as major components. Verbena hastata essential oil was rich in 1-octen-3-ol (up to 29%) and palmitic acid (up to 22%). Four of these essential oils, H. helianthoides, L. spicata, P. incanum, and V. hastata, are reported for the first time. Additionally, the enantiomeric distributions of several terpenoid components have been determined.

The chemical constituents of leaf and peel essential oil of Citrus medica L. were analysed by gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Nineteen components accounting for 99.9% of the oil were identified in leaf oil. The major constituents are erucylamide (28.43%), limonene (18.36%) and citral (12.95%). The peel oil contains forty three components accounting for 99.8% of the total oil and the major components are isolimonene (39.37%), citral (23.12%) and limonene (21.78%). The aim of the study was to characterize the chemical constituents and determine antibacterial and antioxidant activities of essential oils and three different extracts of Dryopteris marginalis. The root had essential oil yield of 0.36 % (w/w) in which 12 organic compounds representing 97.22% of the root oils were identified. Tyranton was found as the most abundant component with 77.571 % of the total concentration in the essential oil. The zones of inhibition of different organic extracts against the tested bacteria were found in the range of 6.5-15 mm. Pseudomonas was the most vulnerable with MICs of 15.62 μg/mL by both ethyl acetate and petroleum ether extract producing 3.8 mm zone of inhibition. The essential oils extracted from roots of Dryopteris marginalis showed maximum 85.29 % inhibition of radical scavenging at 2 mg/mL concentration. Among all root extracts, methanol extract exhibited 41.11 % inhibition at 2 mg/mL concentration.

Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium) is a source of the finest quality of fragrance and its essential oils are used as antibacterial, and antifungal agents. The aim of the current research is to determine chemical constituents in the essential oil of P. graveolens by GC-MS and evaluate its antidiabetic activity via α-glucosidase inhibition assay. The chemical composition of P. graveolens essential oil was determined by GC/MS and its antidiabetic activity was assessed through inhibition of α-glucosidase enzyme in in-vitro models. GC-MS analysis determines 36 chemical components in the essential oil of P. graveolens leaves, and citronellyl isovalerate (10.41 %), menthol (9.61 %), linalool (8.63 %), p-menthone (6.31 %), and geranyl tiglate (4.99 %) were recorded as major constituents. The essential oil of P. graveolens leaves showed concentration dependant inhibition of α-glucosidase enzyme ranging from 28.13±1.41 to 74.24±2.53 µg/mL for concentration ranging from 31.25 to 1000 µg/mL. The IC50 values for of P. graveolens and acarbose were found as 93.72±4.76 and 80.4±2.17 µg/mL, respectively against the α-glucosidase enzyme. The study finding explores the chemical components of P. graveolens growing in the Iraqi Kurdistan region and scientifically supported its possible use in diabetic patients for controlling postprandial hyperglycemia.

Protium aracouchini (Aubl.) Marchand [sin Icica aracouchini Aubl.], which occurs in the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve, in the Brazilian Amazon, was evaluated for the presence of galls, for resin exudation and the composition of the essential oils from the aerial parts and the resin. The experiment to stimulate the exudation of resin from the trunk was conducted using a 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid solution. The resin produced after 40 days and the aerial parts had their essential oils extracted in a Clevenger apparatus and the volatile chemical constituents were analyzed using GC/MS. The non-oxygenated sesquiterpenes α-copaene (21.15%) and α-gurjunene (13.69%), in addition to the oxygenated sesquiterpene spathulenol (10.32%), were detected as the majority constituents of the essential oil of the leaves, and a concentration similar to that of α-gurjunene was found in the branches (13.28%). The resin essential oil showed a high concentration of hydrocarbon monoterpenes (76.49%) with a predominance of α-pinene (17.57%) and limonene (46.11%). Four gall morphotypes were found associated with this species. The present study reports for the first time information on the volatile constituents and the resinous potential of P. aracouchini, and registers the morphotypes of the galls that help in the taxonomy of the species.
