Vision of the body without task cues enhances tactile discrimination performance. This effect has been investigated only with static visual information, although our body usually moves, and dynamic visual and bodily information provides ownership (SoO) and agency (SoA) sensations to body parts. We investigated whether vision of body movements could enhance tactile discrimination performance. Participants observed white dots without any textural information showing lateral hand movements (dynamic condition) or static hands (static condition). For participants experiencing the dynamic condition first, it induced a lower tactile discrimination threshold, as well as a stronger SoO and SoA, compared to the static condition. For participants observing the static condition first, the magnitudes of the enhancement effect in the dynamic condition were positively correlated between the tactile discrimination and SoO/SoA. The enhancement of the dynamic visual information was not observed when the hand shape was not maintained in the scrambled white dot images. Our results suggest that dynamic visual information without task cues can enhance tactile discrimination performance by feeling SoO and SoA only when it maintains bodily information.

OBJECTIVES: For violinists, it is common practice to play while standing or sitting. When playing in an orchestra, generally two persons share one music stand, with one sitting to the right and the other to the left of the stand. The present study investigated specific movement patterns while playing in these different positions. METHODS: Using a posturographic device and 3D motion capture, the body weight distributions and specific body movements of 19 violinists were analyzed. RESULTS: Results showed unbalanced weight distributions while sitting in front of or oriented to the right of the music stand compared to the almost even distributions while standing or oriented to the left of the stand. Analyses of movement patterns showed significant differences between standing and sitting, mainly in the upper body parts with less movability while sitting. While sitting in front of or oriented to the right of the music stand, the right bowing arm showed more restricted movements compared to other positions. CONCLUSION: The playing positions are discussed with regard to possible physiological stress and health risks. The study emphasizes the importance of different playing positions and offers starting points for discussion of postural influences and sensible handling of the instrument in performance and practice for violinists.

The ability to perceive and use the body parts in an organised and differentiated manner is a precursor of body knowledge in infancy. To acquire this ability, the infant’s brain might explore the perceptual consequences of its bodily actions. Undifferentiated body movements would gradually be replaced by more precise actions. Only a very few papers have tested this “global-to-local” hypothesis and none of them have so far been replicated. In this study, we assessed arm differentiation in 4-, 6- and 8-month-old infants using a new contingency detection task in which infants have to detect a contingency between one of their arms’ activity and an audiovisual stimulus on a screen. We found that 4- to 8-month-old infants seem able to differentiate their arms. However, surprisingly, we were not able to show a developmental trend in arm differentiation between 4 and 8 months of age.

Brain Dance was first introduced by Anne Green Gilbert, a creative dance maestro from Washington DC. Brain Dance is an apperception to activate human body parts. Brain Dance acts as a stimulant to connect the performance of the brain, breathing, motoric, and sensory body so that it is ready to move. In the creative dance process, Brain Dance is the first step so that children are ready, not only physically but also psychologically ready. Besides activating the body, Brain Dance also provides a feeling of freedom and happiness and fosters self-confidence. Brain Dance is suitable for all ages, as well as PGSD UST Yogyakarta students as the subject of this study. Students of PGSD’s 7th semester, in particular, are aged between 20-23 years and nearly 90% cannot dance. Never having danced before, and being unable to dance will be the reasons for the inferiority, shame, and insecurity, which will affect the effectiveness of body movements. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, to describe the condition of the data as it is, through the process of observation, interviews, and documentation. Through Brain Dance, this research is expected to foster self-confidence in PGSD UST Yogyakarta students in activating the body in the creative dance work process.

Context:Balance evaluation and training are typically included in rehabilitation after sport injuries.Objective:To evaluate and compare the maximal velocities and accelerations of balancing movements during 2-leg stance with eyes open and closed. The effect of age on the measured values was also evaluated.Design:Cross-sectional study.Participants:100 healthy, randomly selected subjects (50 men, 50 women; age 31–80 years).Setting:Body-movement values were measured with the Mac Reflex motion-analysis system.Intervention:Subjects stood barefoot.Main Outcome Measures:ANOVAs were used to explain the body movements. The location of measurement, presence or absence of vision, and subjects’ age and gender were used as explanatory variables.Results:With eyes closed, all measured body parts had significantly higher maximal velocity and acceleration values than with eyes open. Age seemed to affect the acceleration values.Conclusion:Visual information was found to significantly influence movement values. Exercises should be done under various conditions to improve standing balance abilities.

The invention of depth sensors for mobile devices, has led to availability of relatively inexpensive high-resolution depth and visual (RGB) sensing for a wide range of applications. The complementary nature of the depth and visual information opens up new opportunities to solve fundamental problems in object and activity recognition, people tracking, 3D mapping and localization, etc. One of the most interesting challenges that can be tackled by using these sensors is tracking the body movements of athletes and providing natural interaction as a result. In this study depth sensors and gesture recognition tools will be used to analyze the position and angle of an athlete’s body parts thought out an exercise. The goal is to assess the training performance of an athlete and decrease injury risk by giving warnings when the trainer is performing a high risk activity.

Chronic conditions requiring long-term rehabilitation therapies, such as hypertension, stroke, or cancer, involve complex interactions between various systems/organs of the body and mutual influences, thus implicating a multiorgan approach. The dual-flow IVTech LiveBox2 bioreactor is a recently developed inter-connected dynamic cell culture model able to mimic organ crosstalk, since cells belonging to different organs can be connected and grown under flow conditions in a more physiological environment. This study aims to setup for the first time a 2-way connected culture of human neuroblastoma cells, SH-SY5Y, and Human Coronary Artery Smooth Muscle Cells, HCASMC through a dual-flow IVTech LiveBox2 bioreactor, in order to represent a simplified model of nervous-cardiovascular systems crosstalk, possibly relevant for the above-mentioned diseases. The system was tested by treating the cells with 10nM angiotensin II (AngII) inducing PKCβII/HuR/VEGF pathway activation, since AngII and PKCβII/HuR/VEGF pathway are relevant in cardiovascular and neuroscience research. Three different conditions were applied: 1- HCASMC and SH-SY5Y separately seeded in petri dishes (static condition); 2- the two cell lines separately seeded under flow (dynamic condition); 3- the two lines, seeded in dynamic conditions, connected, each maintaining its own medium, with a membrane as interface for biohumoral changes between the two mediums, and then treated. We detected that only in condition 3 there was a synergic AngII-dependent VEGF production in SH-SY5Y cells coupled to an AngII-dependent PKCβII/HuR/VEGF pathway activation in HCASMC, consistent with the observed physiological response in vivo. HCASMC response to AngII seems therefore to be generated by/derived from the reciprocal cell crosstalk under the dynamic inter-connection ensured by the dual flow LiveBox 2 bioreactor. This system can represent a useful tool for studying the crosstalk between organs, helpful for instance in rehabilitation research or when investigating chronic diseases; further, it offers the advantageous opportunity of cultivating each cell line in its own medium, thus mimicking, at least in part, distinct tissue milieu.

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer in which mostly damaged unpaired DNA starts mutating abnormally and staged an unprecedented proliferation of epithelial skin to form a malignant tumor. In epidemics of skin, pigment-forming melanocytes of basal cells start depleting and form uneven black or brown moles. Melanoma can further spread all over the body parts and could become hard to detect. In USA Melanoma kills an estimated 10,130 people annually. This challenge can be succumbed by using the certain anti-cancer drug. In this study design, cyclophosphamide were used as a model drug. But it has own limitation like mild to moderate use may cause severe cytopenia, hemorrhagic cystitis, neutropenia, alopecia and GI disturbance. This is a promising challenge, which is caused due to the increasing in plasma drug concentration above therapeutic level and due to no rate limiting steps involved in formulation design. In this study, we tried to modify drug release up to threefold and extended the release of drug by preparing and designing niosome based topical gel. In the presence of Dichloromethane, Span60 and cholesterol, the initial niosomes were prepared using vacuum evaporator. The optimum percentage drug entrapment efficacy, zeta potential, particle size was found to be 72.16%, 6.19mV, 1.67µm.Prepared niosomes were further characterized using TEM analyzer. The optimum batch of niosomes was selected and incorporated into topical gel preparation. Cold inversion method and Poloxamer -188 and HPMC as core polymers, were used to prepare cyclophosphamide niosome based topical gel. The formula was designed using Design expert 7.0.0 software and Box-Behnken Design model was selected. Almost all the evaluation parameters were studied and reported. The MTT shows good % cell growth inhibition by prepared niosome based gel against of A375 cell line. The drug release was extended up to 20th hours. Further as per ICH Q1A (R2), guideline 6 month stability studies were performed. The results were satisfactory and indicating a good formulation approach design was achieved for Melanoma treatment.

This paper provides an analysis of how cultural notions of the body and kinship conveyed through Western medical technologies and practices in Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) bring together India's colonial history and its economic development through outsourcing, globalisation and instrumentalised notions of the reproductive body in transnational commercial surrogacy. Essential to this industry is the concept of the disembodied uterus that has arisen in scientific and medical practice, which allows for the logic of the ‘gestational carrier’ as a functional role in ART practices, and therefore in transnational medical fertility travel to India. Highlighting the instrumentalisation of the uterus as an alienable component of a body and subject – and therefore of women's bodies in surrogacy – helps elucidate some of the material and political stakes that accompany the growth of the fertility travel industry in India, where histories of privilege and difference converge. I conclude that the metaphors we use to structure our understanding of bodies and body parts impact how we imagine appropriate roles for people and their bodies in ways that are still deeply entangled with imperial histories of science, and these histories shape the contemporary disparities found in access to medical and legal protections among participants in transnational surrogacy arrangements.

To improve the workout efficiency and to provide the body movement suggestions to users in a “smart gym” environment, we propose to use a depth camera for capturing a user’s body parts and mount multiple inertial sensors on the body parts of a user to generate deadlift behavior models generated by a recurrent neural network structure. The contribution of this paper is trifold: 1) The multimodal sensing signals obtained from multiple devices are fused for generating the deadlift behavior classifiers, 2) the recurrent neural network structure can analyze the information from the synchronized skeletal and inertial sensing data, and 3) a Vaplab dataset is generated for evaluating the deadlift behaviors recognizing capability in the proposed method.
