Sidewalk extraction using aerial and street view images

A reliable, punctual, and spatially accurate dataset of sidewalks is vital for identifying where improvements can be made upon urban environment to enhance multi-modal accessibility, social cohesion, and residents' physical activity. This paper develops a synthetically new spatial procedure to extract the sidewalk by integrating the detected results from aerial and street view imagery. We first train neural networks to extract sidewalks from aerial images, and then use pre-trained models to restore occluded and missing sidewalks from street view images. By combining the results from both data sources, a complete network of sidewalks can be produced. Our case study includes four counties in the U.S., and both precision and recall reach about 0.9. The street view imagery helps restore the occluded sidewalks and largely enhances the sidewalk network's connectivity by linking 20% of dangles.

The controversy over self-regulation has been a central topic of inquiry in sociological research on occupational misconduct and crime. However, few studies have examined the process by which organizational members decide whether to respond to the misconduct of peers, and none have examined the use of neutralization techniques by rule enforcers in organizational settings. The research presented here is based on a case study of the U.S. Naval Academy. Three data sources are analyzed: Survey data collected from Academy midshipmen, semistructured interviews with graduates, and official statistics on occupational misconduct. Findings reveal that Academy members employ a number of neutralization techniques depending on whether they counsel peers, report peers, or choose not to respond to misconduct. Midshipmen who counsel are appealing to peer loyalty, while those who report wrongdoing find themselves neutralizing the effects of violating informal norms about peer loyalty. In contrast, those who ignore misconduct must neutralize the potential effects of betraying loyalty to the institution. In addition to calling for the expansion of neutralization techniques research to include rule enforcers, the implications of this study suggest that the concept be refined to examine the impact of conflicting loyalties on the types of neutralization techniques employed in systems of self-regulation.

An efficient metal recovery in heap leach operations relies on uniform distribution of leaching reagent solution over the heap leach pad surface. However, the current practices for heap leach pad (HLP) surface moisture monitoring often rely on manual inspection, which is labor-intensive, time-consuming, discontinuous, and intermittent. In order to complement the manual monitoring process and reduce the frequency of exposing technical manpower to the hazardous leaching reagent (e.g., dilute cyanide solution in gold leaching), this manuscript describes a case study of implementing an HLP surface moisture monitoring method based on drone-based aerial images and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Field data collection was conducted on a gold HLP at the El Gallo mine, Mexico. A commercially available hexa-copter drone was equipped with one visible-light (RGB) camera and one thermal infrared sensor to acquire RGB and thermal images from the HLP surface. The collected data had high spatial and temporal resolutions. The high-quality aerial images were used to generate surface moisture maps of the HLP based on two CNN approaches. The generated maps provide direct visualization of the different moisture zones across the HLP surface, and such information can be used to detect potential operational issues related to distribution of reagent solution and to facilitate timely decision making in heap leach operations.

The tourism industry has grown rapidly in recent years, and IT technology is also having a big impact on tourists. Tourism services, information generated by tourists and other sources can be used to build models of tourist behavior. These models can improve the travel experience in various ways. The author presents the system for analyzing tourist behavior based on the concept of a digital pattern of life. The system determines the tourist, possible data sources, ways of storing and presenting data, as well as tools for analyzing behavior. The author used artifi cial neural networks to analyze behavior from a dataset of tourist travels made with cars. One scenario of tourist behavior using artifi cial neural networks is presented. The collected results will be used for improving tourist services.

This chapter emphasizes the need for research that is designed and implemented explicitly with dissemination in mind. This is illustrated in relation to environmental and policy initiatives to influence physical activity through active transport, and through the example of initiatives to reduce workplace sitting. The other element of this chapter, the broad-reach intervention-dissemination case study of a health behavior-change program, highlights the need to maintain key elements of research quality in designing for dissemination, to the extent that is practically possible: a rigorous study design; the systematic tracking of implementation and related costs; and, the conduct of dose-response, maintenance and cost-effectiveness analyses. These examples of designing for dissemination illustrate not only the exciting opportunities for real-world dissemination research, but also the resourcefulness and commitment required for success.
