The effectiveness of penitentiary activities, assuming the authoritarianism of the management system, is largely determined by the individual and personal characteristics of unit heads of the penal system, who need to show their managerial abilities as fully as possible, but not every leader has a sufficient amount of such abilities. If he/she does, he/she cannot always demonstrate them to the fullest extent. In this case, there can be serious miscalculations, leading to certain socio-psychological and criminological consequences. Among them, the instability of the socio-psychological climate in a team, provoking a high employee turnover, which does not allow forming the key personnel of a unit, as well as a high risk that subordinate employees, projecting the style, manner of communication and affects of the management, begin to show socially disapproving and even self-destructive forms of behavior, such as various forms of aggression towards oneself and others, neglect of safety requirements at work and in everyday life, unlawful actions against convicts, etc. One of the most important factors in the prevention of these phenomena is the system of work with a personnel reserve for managerial positions. The arsenal of diagnostic tools for the study of 65 employees working in the penal system, who are middle managers in the personnel reserve, included a set of methods: a) analysis of documents; b) expert assessment of the employee’s personality; c) psychological testing, which allows obtaining a generalized psychological profile of a personality according to the estimates of five “traits of an adequate personality”, motivators of socio-psychological activity, the style of behavior self-regulation, levels of legal consciousness and faith in people, as well as self-assessment of professional development opportunities and career prospects. The generalized characteristics of the respondents show that 88% of them meet the requirements for penitentiary activities. The respondents have an average level of emotional intelligence development with a tendency to lower; their style of behavior self-regulation is accentuated due to their relatively poorly developed independence; 95% of respondents have a high and medium level of legal consciousness development; 70% of them are distinguished by their distrust of people; the leading motivator of their socio-psychological activity is success achievement. All surveyed employees see opportunities for their professional development, although about 30% of them have concerns about promotion opportunities in this system. Based on the results obtained, the resources of success and the four most important areas of work with the personnel reserve were identified.

Professional development has mainly centered around training processes that involve updating knowledge, yet it has made little headway as a construct that includes both the professional and personal characteristics and working conditions. It has also focused more on developing training programmes than on analysing the tools for continuous training. This chapter analyses the relationships between professional development, organisational development and the creation and management of collective knowledge. These three concepts can be interrelated and contribute to change when we place ourselves within the framework of autonomous organisations with collective projects focused on lifelong learning. It also outlines the Accelera experience of knowledge creation and management in communities, describing the model and process used. This article examines some of the findings and future prospects of the methodology presented.

Collegiate recreation professionals were surveyed to determine whether, how regularly, and by what means they were conducting assessment. This descriptive study explored current assessment practices; surveyed resources used in assessment, including specific attention to CAS materials; and reported outcomes of assessment activities. Results indicated that more than 90% of respondents were engaged in assessment, regardless of institution type. Professional literature, professional development activities, and assessment teams were the most frequently used resources; approximately 40% reported using CAS materials. Most frequently reported outcomes of assessment were generally related to student staffing. Respondents also indicated that mission statements and professional staffing changed less frequently as a result of assessment efforts. Implications for the practice of assessment in collegiate recreation programs are discussed.

Objectives: This paper reports on changes, over time and between states, in the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in the private psychiatric sector in Australia between 1984 and 2004. Method: Data for ECT services, and all specialist psychiatry services provided under the Medicare system, have been analysed in absolute numbers and as utilization rates. Results: Changes in the use of ECT over time are different from other services provided by private psychiatrists. As in other countries, the use of ECT initially declined in period studied but has increased in recent years. In addition, there is a clear pattern of differential use of ECT between the states and territories. Conclusions: This descriptive study cannot ‘explain’ the results obtained: other data, incorporated into an explanatory model using regression analysis, are needed to determine the factors underlying the utilization patterns obtained in this study. Thus, further work is needed. Furthermore, it is important to analyse data at a lower level of geographical aggregation than that of the state/territory: this (state/territory) aggregation conceals differences in utilization between metropolitan, minor city, rural and remote regions of the country.

Pengembangan Profesional Berkelanjutan (PPB) merupakan komponen sistem jenjang karir dimana perencanaan dan implementasi perencanaan karir dapat memengaruhi proses kehidupan perawat. Jenjang karir di beberapa RS telah dilaksanakan namun kadangkala belum selaras dengan pelaksanaan rekrutmen, rotasi, pengembangan professional berkelanjutan dan promosi yang menjadi komponen tidak terpisah dari jenjang karir. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi pengaruh PPB dengan implementasi manajemen nyeri di rumah sakit. Disain penelitian menggunakan deskriptif korelasi dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Data dikumpulkan melalui data primer sebanyak 121 perawat pelaksana serta data sekunder dokumen rekam medis pasien berisi catatan keperawatan terkait manajemen nyeri yang terdiri dari pengkajian, intervensi dan re-evaluasi. Teknik pengambilan sampel adalah simple random sampling. Analisis menggunakan regresi linier berganda. Hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa variabel implementasi sistem jenjang karir yang paling berpengaruh terhadap implementasi manajemen nyeri oleh perawat klinik adalah pengembangan profesional berkelanjutan (PPB) (p= 0,027) . Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a component of a career ladder system which its planning and implementation can affect in a nurse's life process. In some hospitals, the nursing career ladder system were not associated with recruitment, rotation, continuous professional development and promotion process. This study aimed to identify the effect of CPD to the implementation of pain management in a hospital. The design research was descriptive correlative with cross sectional approach. Data were collected through primary data as much as 121 nurses and also secondary data from patient medical records related to pain management nursing documentation included assessment, intervention, and re-evaluation. The sampling technique was simple random sampling. Data were analyzed by multiple linear regression. The result showed that the variables of the career ladder system implementation that most affected on the pain management implementation by clinical nurses is continuing professional development (CPD)(p= 0.027). It is recommended to make structured planning through training needs analysis for each nurse.

Abstract Background: Co-production has been widely recognized as a plausible solution to reduce users’ dissatisfactions, service providers’ inefficacy and to diminish conflicts in relations between users and providers. However, this enhancement of co-production has started to be query: co-production is not always a panacea and its effects may not be always fruitful. To understand and prevent unsuccessful users and providers’ collaboration, the recent literature has stated to focus on the causes of co-destruction. This paper investigates the possible factors that may facilitate the shifting of a co-production process applied to family caregivers of older patients living in rural and remote area, into a co-destruction process by looking at the whole service network. Methods: To investigate this open topic, we performed a single case study by looking at a longitudinal project (Place4Carers) that aimed at co-producing a new public service with and for family caregivers of older patients living in rural and remote area. We organised collaborative workshops and semi-structured interviews to collect the perspectives of family caregivers and service providers on the co-production process. As part of the research team that participated at the co-production process, the authors joined the reflections with a reflexive approach. Results: Results confirmed the occurrence of some causes of co-destruction suggested by Jarvi’s model during the co-production process: insufficient level of trust, mistakes, inability to change from caregivers and inability to serve from providers. Moreover, they identified the difficulty of creating a cohesive partnership between research members as a possible pitfall of co-production. However, all these causes did not imply an inevitable process of co-destruction. Conclusions: Our article suggests that pitfalls identified by Jarvi and the cultural differences within research members can actually influence co-production but do not inevitably lead to co-destruction. Moreover, we argued that co-creation and co-destruction processes might coexist. The role of researchers and service providers is to prevent and recover from co-destruction effects. Objective.A literature review was conducted to identify the reported benefits attributed to telehealth for people living and professionals working in rural and remote areas of Australia. Data sources.Scopus and relevant journals and websites were searched using the terms: telemedicine, telehealth, telepsychiatry, teledermatology, teleradiology, Australia, and each state and territory. Publications since 1998 were included. Study selection.The initial search resulted in 176 articles, which was reduced to 143 when research reporting on Australian rural, regional or remote populations was selected. Data synthesis.A narrative review was conducted using an existing ‘benefits’ framework. Patients are reported to have benefited from: lower costs and reduced inconvenience while accessing specialist health services; improved access to services and improved quality of clinical services. Health professionals are reported to have benefited from: access to continuing education and professional development; provision of enhanced local services; experiential learning, networking and collaboration. Discussion.Rural Australians have reportedly benefited from telehealth. The reported improved access and quality of clinical care available to rural Australians through telemedicine and telehealth may contribute to decreasing the urban–rural health disparities. The reported professional development opportunities and support from specialists through the use of telehealth may contribute to improved rural medical workforce recruitment and retention. What is known about the topic?An extensive international literature has reported on the efficacy of telehealth, and to a lesser extent the clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of telemedicine. Systematic reviews conclude that the quality of the studies preclude definitive conclusions being drawn about clinical and cost-effectiveness, although there is some evidence of effective clinical outcomes and the potential for cost-benefits. Little attention has been paid to the benefits reported for people who live in rural and remote Australia, despite this being a rationale for the use of telehealth in rural and remote locations. What does this paper add?Patients in rural and remote locations in Australia are reported to benefit from telehealth by increased access to health services and up-skilled health professionals. Health professionals are reported to benefit from telehealth by up-skilling from increased contact with specialists and increased access to professional development. The review findings suggest that one strategy, the increased use of telehealth, has the potential to reduce the inequitable access to health services and the poorer health status that many rural Australians experience, and contribute to addressing the on-going problem of the recruitment and retention of the rural health workforce. What are the implications for practitioners?The use of telehealth appears to be a path to up-skilling for rural and remote practitioners.
