Background: During the past few years there was a western influence in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and as a result of it the eating habits among the male college students had rapidly changed which also increased the prevalence rate of overweight and obesity. Therefore the objectives of the study were 1) To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in a sample of male college students in Abha, Saudi Arabia. 2) To determine the relationship between the Student’s body weight and their eating habits. Methods: A cross-Sectional study was done among 445 male college students from king Khalid University, Abha Saudi Arabia. Study participants were selected randomly and self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data was analyzed by using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS Inc. version 16.) and expressed in percentages. Results: The study found that 28% and 20 % of students were overweight and obese. Daily intake of snacks and lack of consumption of vegetable and fruits were found to be the common dietary habits among the male college students. Majority of the students were aware about the balanced nutrition and it was positively correlated with the normal body weight. Abstract Background Handgrip strength (HGS) and pinch strengths (PS) are the common measures to evaluate hand function and predict general health. Normative values of HGS, PS, and prediction equations of HGS for healthy young adult women have not been reported yet in Saudi Arabia. The aims of the study were to determine the HGS and PS normative values and develop the prediction equations for the established HGS in a sample of healthy female college students, aged 19–25 years. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 139 healthy female college students were recruited randomly from King Saud University (KSU). Both HGS and PS in kilograms were measured using a Jamar hand dynamometer and pinch gauge respectively with standard testing protocol and instructions. Results HGS significantly increased with progress in age, while there was no significant effect of age on PS. HGS and PS of the dominant hand were statistically greater than those of the nondominant hand (P < 0.05) in most ages. There were significant correlations between dominant HGS, age (r = 0.7, P < 0.001), palmar width (r = 0.74, P < 0.001), and level of physical activity (r = 0.60, P < 0.001). Regression analysis revealed that palmar width and age were the predictors of dominant HGS and accounted for 55% and 14% of the variation, respectively. Conclusions Normative values can be used as a clinical reference in the evaluation of hand function in the rehabilitation process with consideration of age and palmar width for a particular population.

ABSTRACT Objective To obtain base line data about the availability of cariogenic foods in the primary school canteens in the city of Abha, Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods The present study was performed in 6 to 10-year-old school boys living in Abha city in 2012. Eight public primary schools with canteen facilities were randomly selected and all the children in the schools were included in the study. Data was collected to know the availability of foods which are cariogenic and the students were made to answer a questionnaire that had questions about their source of food intake. Results A total number of 1,807 primary school students participated in the study. 87% of the items available in school canteens were cariogenic and only 13% were noncariogenic. 1505 (83%) school children get food from home, 263 (15%) depend entirely on the canteen, 1320 (73%) eat from both home and canteen and only 158 (8%) of the school children rely entirely on homemade food. Conclusion The canteens should reinforce the classroom programs relating to food, nutrition and health. Standard guidelines have to be implemented throughout Saudi Arabia about eating habits in school and improve the overall nutritional quality of school food. Aims: To assess the levels of perceived stress among college students in Saudi Arabia after changing the learning protocols because of covid-19 pandemic. Study Design: This was a cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted in Saudi Arabia, from May 2020 to October 2021. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey study that was carried out in Saudi Arabia. A self-administered, pre-designed questionnaire, including Perceived Stress Scale of 10 items was used to measure the stress levels. The participants were selected randomly from different social media users  who lived and studied in Saudi Arabian universities.  In this study, 10-item questions of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) was used based on a 5-point Likert scale to score each item (0 = Never 1 = Almost Never 2 = Sometimes 3 = Fairly Often 4 = Very Often). Results: A total of 2034 students living in Saudi Arabia participated in the study. The results showed that 76.84% of total participants had strong stress, males reported higher score as compared to their Female counterparts.  Also, students older than 28 years reported higher level of stress, the students in Qassim region showed highest scores of stress. In addition, excellent academic achievement was strongly associated with high level of stress. Conclusion: The findings suggest that significant number of students had higher stress levels using the perceived stress scale. Therefore, this cross-sectional study identified a high stress level in COVID-19 crisis among university students in Saudi Arabia.
