Abstract Background Nutritional factors have been identified as preventable risk factors for cardiovascular disease; this study aimed to investigate the application of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in nutritional behaviors related to cardiovascular diseases among the women in Fasa city, Fars province, Iran. Methods The study was conducted in two stages. First, the factors affecting nutritional behaviors associated with cardiovascular disease on 350 women who were referred to Fasa urban health centers were determined based on the TPB. In the second stage, based on the results of a cross-sectional study, quasi-expeimental study was performed on 200 women covered by Fasa health centers. The questionnaire used for the study was a questionnaire based on TPB. The questionnaire was completed by the experimental and control groups before and three months after the intervention. Data were analyzed by SPSS software using logistic regression, paired t-test, independent sample t-test, and chi-square test. The level of significance is considered 0.05. Result The constructs of attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control (PBC) were predictors of nutritional behaviors associated with cardiovascular disease in women. The constructs predicted 41.6% of the behavior. The results showed that mean scores of attitude, subjective norms, PBC, intention, nutritional performance related to the cardiovascular disease before intervention were, respectively, 24.32, 14.20, 18.10, 13.37 and 16.28, and after the intervention, were, respectively, 42.32, 25.40, 33.72, 30.13 and 41.38. All the constructs except the attitude in the intervention group were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than the control group. Conclusion The results of the present study showed that the educational intervention based on the TPB would be consider an effective educational and promotinal strategy for the nutritional behaviors to prevent cardiovascular disease in women. Considering the role of mothers in providing family food baskets and the effect of their nutritional behaviors on family members, the education of this group can promote healthy eating behaviors in the community and family.

Introduction: Medication adherence is regarded as one of the most important factors in caring for hypertension. This study aimed to investigate the effect of intervention based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) on medication adherence and its influencing factors on the elderly with hypertension in a rural area, Kerman province, Iran. Methods: This quasi-experimental study of the pre and post-control type was conducted on 109 elderly patients with hypertension. Data were collected using a multistage random sampling and a valid questionnaire based on the TPB. The intervention was an educational program based on TPB constructs using educational videos, pamphlets and booklets approved by the Ministry of Health. The collected data were analyzed by the SPSS 22 using parametric tests (Independent t-test, paired t-test, and regression analysis). Results: The average score of the attitudes , perceived behavioral control, as well as medication adherence behavior constructs increased significantly after the intervention in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Multivariate regression analysis in intervention group after intervention showed that 76% of variations in intention were explained by the model. Attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control were independent predictors of intention. The association between subjective norms and intention was of marginal significance (B = 0.89). Conclusion: The results of this research showed that an educational program based on TPB can affect medication adherence on elderly rural patients suffering from hypertension.

Abstract IntroductionHand washing is of key importance among residents to prevent life-threatening infections such as severe pneumonia or other microbial infection. Residents received coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine at vaccination station are obliged to stay in the vaccination station at least 30 minutes. The period of post-vaccination observation is an ideal time for hand washing intervention. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a health intervention on hand washing among residents, who received the COVID-19 vaccine, by using the theory of planned behavior (TPB).Methods:This randomized controlled trial was carried out between March 2021 and May 2021 in Wuhan, China. Participants were recruited using randomized cluster sampling and divided into intervention group and control group by random allocation. Data were collected using a self-administered researcher-made questionnaire based on TPB and Hand washing Questionnaire. Validity (content validity index = 0.87; content validity ratio = 0.89) and reliability of the questionnaires were confirmed (α = 0.96). Intervention was implemented during the observation period post-vaccinated (lasting 15 min) using videos and live training based on TPB constructs.Results:A total of 448 residents were participated with a response rate of 71.9% (322). The mean age of the participants was 46 (53% females). Compared with the control group, the scores of subjective norm (P = 0.009) and perceived behavioral control (P < 0.001) in intervention group were higher after one time intervention. Mean scores of attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavior control and intention of intervention group was significantly higher than the control group after twice intervention (P < 0.001). Moreover, participants in the intervention group performed better than those in the control group on daily hand-washing times (P = 0.044), hand sanitizer use (P = 0.003), rub time (P < 0.001), following the six-step technique (P < 0.001) after intervention.Conclusions:The findings suggested that applying TPB based intervention is suggested to improve hand washing behavior in residents.

Background: Appropriate breastfeeding reduces health disorders and death among infants. Objectives: The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of educational intervention based on the extended theory of planned behavior. Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 168 pregnant women from 20 health centers were allocated into intervention and control groups by a multi-stage sampling method. The data collecting tool included demographic and constructs of an extended theory of planned behavior. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were confirmed by an expert panel and Cronbach's alpha test, respectively. The educational methods encompassed face to face training, pamphlet and flashcards distribution, and clip presentation. Two 45-minute educational sessions were conducted; the data were recollected 6 months after the delivery. Results: The mean ages of the intervention and control group were 29 ± 6 and 28.7 ± 5.9. The pregnancy rate and age of the pregnancy in the intervention group were 2.7 ± 1.4 and 29 weeks, respectively. After the intervention, the mean score of the behavior in the intervention group increased compared to the control group. The intention (B = 0.4, P = 0.01) and perceived behavior control (B = 0.42, P = 0.03) were the predictors of the behavior. Conclusions: The structures of the extended theory of planned behavior are suitable framework to promote exclusive breastfeeding among pregnant women.

Introduction: Rapid decline of the total fertility rate in Iran in recent decades has caused serious demographic challenges to the country. One important reason for this decrease is single-child behavior adopted by Iranian families. Objective: The present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of education based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) on childbearing intention in single-child women. Materials and Methods: This randomized field trial with the pretest-posttest design was done on 72 single-child women presenting to health centers in Mashhad City, Iran, in the intervention (37 persons) and control (35 persons) groups from August 2019 to February 2020. Research tools included a demographic and obstetric questionnaire and a researcher-made childbearing intention questionnaire based on TPB. The intervention group received three 110-min sessions of education, which was based on TPB. The control group received routine health center care. The study data were analyzed by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk, Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Freidman test, post hoc tests of Bonferroni and Dunn, the Spearman rank correlation coefficient, and the Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) model. Results: The mean±SD age of the participants were 32.6±4.7 and 32.9±4.7 years in the intervention and control groups, respectively, and most of the women had university-level education in both groups. Changes in childbearing intention from the pre-intervention stage were significantly higher in the intervention group than the control group immediately (P=0.001) and then one month after the intervention (P=0.001). The results of the GEE model showed that the childbearing intention was significantly higher in the intervention group (β=0.68, 95% CI; 0.449-0.911, P=0.001,), and there was a significant positive relationship between attitude and childbearing (β=0.023, 95% CI; 0.013-0.033, P=0.001). Conclusion: Education based on the theory of planned behavior increased childbearing intention in single-child women in this study, so this educational program is advised for promoting childbearing.

This designed study aims to evaluate the effect of educational intervention based on the theory of planned behavior on promoting physical activity among middle-aged women attending the health centers in Karaj city during 2017-2018. Methods This research was a quasi-experimental controlled trial, and the study incorporated 140 Middle-Aged Women Referring to Karaj Health Centers assigned randomly to a control and intervention group (70 each group). Participants enrolling in the survey were asked to complete the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and also the theory of planned behavior measures at the baseline and the end of the study. The study applied Nonparametric Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests and ANCOVA to interpret the results. Results The results revealed participants' age range between 30 to 50 years with the mean and standard deviation scores 40.07 (8.750) in training and 45.81 (8.513) at the control group. The intervention improved the theory of planned behavior measures and the physical activities of participants. The results showed a significant difference in the attitude score, the perceived behavioral control score, and the level of subjective norms between two training and non-training groups (P<0.001). The followed-up physical activity score also showed an improvement in the IPAQ score of participants in the training group (p<0.001). Conclusions The findings suggested the effectiveness of training based on the theory of planned behavior in the promotion of physical activity among middle-aged women.

Abstract Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer and the fifth deadly cancer among women in Iran. Educational interventions based on proper behavior promoting models can lead to early diagnosis of cervical cancer. The theory of planned behavior pays attention to social factors and motivation for following the significant others. The aim of this study was to determine the factors related to performing regular Pap smear test based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) among the females living in Fasa, Iran.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 700 participants. Then the educational intervention based on the results of cross-sectional study was conducted in form of a workshop for 50 women as the intervention group, and 50 women were considered as the control group. After all, the data were entered into the SPSS statistical software and were analyzed via logistic regressions analysis, paired t-test, independent t-test, chi-square test, and McNemar test.Result: According to the results, 45.7% of the patients had a history of undergoing a Pap smear test, and 20.7% of them performed this test regularly. The knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were the predictors of intention and behavior of Pap smear test among the women (P<0.05). These components accounted for 57.4% and 31.6% of the intention and behavior variance, respectively. After the intervention, a significant increase was observed in the mean scores of attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control in the intervention group compared to the control group. The results revealed no significant difference between the two groups concerning the behavioral intention (p=0.41) and performance of the Pap smear test (p=0.583). The number of the participants who had undergone the Pap smear test increased from 10 to 26 in the intervention group three months after the intervention. The results of McNemar test indicated that this difference was statistically significant.Conclusion: The results indicated an increase in the women’s performance of the Pap smear screening test by appropriate planning, provision of educational packages based on the women’s needs, and using effective subjective norms.This clinical trial is registered in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT20160830029608N3).

Abstract Background Several studies have attempted to understand the link among drug addicts and suicidal ideation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors associated with suicidal ideation in drug addicts based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Method This cross-sectional study was conducted with 2160 of drug addicts in private and public clinics for quitting addiction through methadone treatment in Shiraz city, Fars province, Iran from October 2018 to June 2019. Data gathering tools were a questionnaire on demographic characteristics, the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation and a questionnaire based on constructs of TPB. Data were analysed by SPSS 22 using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, and frequency) and statistical tests (independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and linear regression). The significance level was considered 0.05. Results The mean age of the participants was 39.24 ± 11.92; 80.28% of them had a history of quit and 43.19% of them had a history of arrest and imprisonment. According to the results, 19.63% of the participants had suicidal ideation and 10.97% had a history of suicide attempt during their lifetime. The constructs of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intent predicted suicidal ideation in the subjects. Intent and perceived behavioral control constructs were the strongest predictors of suicidal ideation, respectively. In general, the studied variables predicted 54.8% of suicidal ideation. Conclusion The structures of attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control and intent predicted suicidal ideation in the drug addicts, so the theory of planned behavior will be a good framework for educational interventions to reduce suicide in them.

Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate an education program based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) for salt intake in individuals at risk of hypertension. This randomized controlled trial was conducted from February 2017 to December 2017 in Shahediyeh, Yazd Province, Iran. For this purpose, 140 people were selected and assigned to two groups of 70 each, namely, intervention and control. Data were gathered by a self-administered TPB based questionnaire, and also 24-h urinary sodium and potassium levels and systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured. The intervention group received TPB based on a training package, while the control group received no intervention. Post-test was administered 2 months after completion of the intervention. Independent and paired t-tests, χ2 and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used for data analysis. All mean scores on TPB constructs increased significantly except motivation to comply and power of control for intervention group. Average salt intake decreased in intervention group compared with the control group (−4.73 g/day �0.73 versus −0.24 g/day �0.94, P &lt; 0.001), but systolic and diastolic blood pressure did not change significantly in intervention group compared with control group. TPB can be implemented along with other approaches in educational programs to reduce salt intake. Code: IRCT201701108803N3.

Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of educational method, based on the theory of planned behavior on childbearing decision in married couples. Materials and Methods: This study was a semi-experimental investigation. The population under study consisted of 140 marrying couples referred to the pre-marital counseling center in Sahneh city in 2018 [experimental group; n=70 vs. control group; n=70]. The sample method was convenience sampling .The experimental group received educational intervention based on the theory of planned behavior [for 8 sessions]; whereas, the control group participated in the routine pre-marital counseling program. The data was collected using Aattitudes toward fertility and childbearing scale of Soderberg, Lundgren, Christensson & Hildingsson [2013]. The data was analyzed by SPSS 20. Results: The results showed that intervention had an effect on increasing tendency towards childbearing decision in men and women who were about to get married [P<0.05]. The intervention group showed a slight decrease during the follow-up phase, but this was not significant [P> 0.05]. Also, the results showed that men's tendency towards childbearing in the intervention group was different in terms of income, place of residence and housing status [P<0.05]. Conclusion: The results showed that the effectiveness of educational method, based on the theory of planned behavior on childbearing decision. It is recommended that, in view of the importance of childbearing in the family and social systems, in the context of pre-marriage counseling, more effective programs be provided to draw attention of the couples to childbearing at appropriate age and conditions.
