AbstractThe increasing global perception of the importance of microbial inoculants to promote productivity and sustainability in agriculture prompts the adoption of bio-inputs by the farmers. The utilization of selected elite strains of nitrogen-fixing and other plant-growth promoting microorganisms in single inoculants creates a promising market for composite inoculants. However, combining microorganisms with different physiological and nutritional needs requires biotechnological development. We report the development of a composite inoculant containing Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens and Azospirillum brasilense for the soybean crop. Evaluation of use of carbon sources indicates differences between the microbial species, with Bradyrhizobium growing better with mannitol and glycerol, and Azospirillum with malic acid and maleic acid, allowing the design of a formulation for co-culture. Species also differ in their growth rates, and the best performance of both microorganisms occurred when Azospirillum was inoculated on the third day of growth of Bradyrhizobium. The composite inoculant developed was evaluated in five field trials performed in Brazil, including areas without and with naturalized populations of Bradyrhizobium. The composite inoculant resulted in symbiotic performance comparable to the application of the two microorganisms separately. In comparison to the single inoculation with Bradyrhizobium, co-inoculation resulted in average increases of 14.7% in grain yield and 16.4% in total N accumulated in the grains. The performance of the composite inoculant was similar or greater than that of the non-inoculated control receiving a high dose of N-fertilizer, indicating the importance of the development and validation of inoculants carrying multiple beneficial microorganisms.

This research carried out in Huong Vinh commune, Huong Tra town, Thua Thien Hue province aimed to identify types of land use and soil characteristics. Results showed that five crops are found in Huong Vinh commune including rice, peanut, sweet potato, cassava and vegetable. There are two major soil orders with four soil suborders classified by FAO in Huong Vinh commune including Fluvisols (Dystric Fluvisols<em>, </em>Gleyic Fluvisols and Cambic Fluvisols) and Arenosols (Haplic Arenosols). The results from soil analysis showed that three soil suborders including Dystric Fluvisols<em>, </em>Gleyic Fluvisols and Cambic Fluvisols belonging to Fluvisols were clay loam in texture, low pH, low in OC, total N, total P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> and total K<sub>2</sub>O. Meanwhile, the Haplic Arenosols was loamy sand in texture, poor capacity to hold OC, total N, total P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> and total K<sub>2</sub>O

The plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus cereus RS87 was previously reported to promote plant growth in various crops in both greenhouse and field trials. To apply as a plant growth promoting agent with practical use, it is essential to ease the burden of routine preparation of a fresh suspension of strain RS87 in laboratory. The objectives of this study were to investigate the feasibility of film-coating seeds with B. cereus RS87 spores for early plant growth enhancement and to reveal the indoleacetic acid (IAA) production released from strain RS87. The experiment consisted of the following 5 treatments: nontreated seeds, water-soaked seeds, film-coated seeds, seeds soaked with vegetative cells of strain RS87, and film-coated seeds with strain RS87 spores. Three experiments were conducted separately to assess seed emergence, root length, and plant height. Results showed that both vegetative cells and spores of strain RS87 significantly promoted (P ≤ 0.05) seed emergence, root length and plant height over the control treatments. The strain RS87 also produced IAA. In conclusion, the film coating of seeds with spores of B. cereus RS87 demonstrated early plant growth enhancement as well as seeds using their vegetative cells. IAA released from strain RS87 would be one of the mechanisms for plant growth enhancement.

COLMENA is a microbial culture collection dedicated to the characterization, classification, preservation, and transferal of native microorganisms isolated from various agro-systems and other ecosystems in Mexico. This collection aims to protect microbial diversity, reducing soil degradation, but also exploiting its agro-biotechnological potential. So far, COLMENA has isolated and cryopreserved soil microorganisms from different crops in two major agricultural regions in Mexico, the Yaqui Valley, Sonora, and the Fuerte Valley, Sinaloa. COLMENA has specialized in the identification and characterization of microbial strains with metabolic capacities related to the promotion of plant growth and the biocontrol of phytopathogens. Thus, COLMENA has identified several promising plant growth-promoting microbial (PGPM) strains due to their metabolic and genetic potentials and their beneficial effects in vivo and field trials. These findings demonstrate the biotechnological potential of these strains for their future use in profitable agricultural alternatives focused on enhancing global food security. To share the knowledge and results of the COLMENA team’s scientific research, a virtual platform was created, where the database of the studied and preserved microorganisms is available to professionals, researchers, agricultural workers, and anyone who is interested.

Motivation is a fundamental concept in understanding people’s experiences and behavior. Yet, motivation to engage with an interactive system has received only limited attention in HCI. We report the development and validation of the User Motivation Inventory (UMI). The UMI is an 18-item multidimensional measure of motivation, rooted in self-determination theory (SDT). It is designed to measure intrinsic motivation, integrated, identified, introjected, and external regulation, as well as amotivation. Results of two studies (total N = 941) confirm the six-factor structure of the UMI with high reliability, as well as convergent and discriminant validity of each subscale. Relationships with core concepts such as need satisfaction, vitality, and usability were studied. Additionally, the UMI was found to detect differences in motivation for people who consider abandoning a technology compared to those who do not question their use. The central role of motivation in users’ behavior and experience is discussed.

Objetivou-se orientar cuidadores de idosos em um curso de capacitação no Centro de Atenção à Saúde do Idoso e seu Cuidadores, Universidade Federal Fluminense, sobre as principais carências e necessidades nutricionais requeridas pelos própriose pelos idosos, alertando ainda sobre os riscos das tecnologias. Trata-se de um estudo de caso do estágio de docência, sobre acapacitação de cuidadores, enquanto mestrando acadêmico do Programa de Ciências do Cuidado em Saúde. A compreensão evisualização acerca da organização e planejamento das demandas cotidianas requisitadas de um profissional acadêmico em suaspalestras/cursos/oficinas. Conclui-se que há necessidade de uma capacitação dos pós-graduandos nos métodos de transmissãodos conhecimentos acadêmicos, como por exemplo, a linguagem utilizada para os cuidadores, objetivando assim a compreensãode toda a turma e alertando sobre os riscos das influências tecnológicas na baixa qualidade alimentar ingerida.Palavras-chave: Educação; Ensino em Enfermagem; Nutrição. This is a case study of the teaching stage, about the qualification of caregivers, asan academic master of the Health Care Sciences Program. Understanding and visualization about the organization and planningof the daily demands of an academic professional in their lectures/courses/workshops. It is concluded that there is a need for thetraining of postgraduates in the methods of transmission of academic knowledge, such as the language used for caregivers, aimingat understanding the whole class and warning about the risks of technological influences in the low food quality.Keywords: Education; Teaching, Nursing; Nutrition.

Soybean accounts for 38% of the total oilseed production in India, and around 50% of the total oilseed production in Kharif season. This crop has shown tremendous growth over the last four decades with an average national yield of 1264 kg/hectare. Currently, soybean is severely attacked by more than 10 major diseases. Yield losses due to different diseases ranges from 20 to 100%. Timely detection of soybean crop disease would help farmers save their money, effort, and crop from being destroyed. This chapter presents a case study on the development of a decision support system for prediction of soybean crop disease severity. The outcome of this system will aid farmers to decide the extent of disease treatment to be employed. Such predictions make use of human involvement, and thus are a source of ambiguities. To deal with such ambiguities in decision making, this decision support system uses fuzzy inference method based on triangular fuzzy sets.

AbstractIntroduction:Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) or klatskin’s tumour involves malignant tumours at the liver hilum’s biliary confluence. Incidence of CCA results in unresectable tumours that require appropriate therapy to improve quality of life. The liver is considered as the most frequent site of tumour recurrence. Promising results of long-term survival have been established with computed tomography-guided high-dose-rate brachytherapy.Materials and methods:Intraluminal brachytherapy (ILBT) is performed through the percutaneous transhapatic bile duct drain tube (PTBD). The passage of the brachytherapy guide tube through the bile duct is more complex compared with oesophageal/endobronchial application.Results/discussion:It results in a recoiled view of the tube in the abdominal region of the computed tomography (CT) scan. Owing to inherent artefacts induced by metal stents in CT scans, intersected view is possible between the ILBT guide tube and the intra-hepatic drain tube. It would mislead the planner to track wrong passage that could result in fatal error.Conclusion:In this case study, we contoured the ILBT guide tube by cross-verifying its position with a digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR) before catheter tracking. Thus, it ensures precise simulation of source dwell positions, thereby avoiding high-dose delivery to nearby vital organs such as intestines, liver hilum and blood vessels.

A bench-scale study was undertaken to examine the effects of easily biodegradable organic carbon substrate on denitrification reaction and overall nitrogen removal from domestic wastewater under a modified sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system. The operation strategy of the SBR consisted of 0.75 h FILL, 8 h REACT separated into 4 h aerobic, 3 h anoxic and 1 h aerobic stages, 1.5 h SETTLE, 1 h DRAW and 0.75 h IDLE. Methanol, sodium acetate and sodium propionate, at the concentrations equivalent to theoretical COD values of 50, 100 and 150 mg O2 1−1 were used as the external carbon sources and added to the reactors prior to the anoxic stage. The study reveals that 4 h aerobic stage was sufficient to nitrify more than 98% NH4+-N and carbon addition caused slightly more nitrification than the control. Addition of sodium propionate at a low concentration (50 mg O2 1−1) significantly enhanced the denitrification process, the nitrate content in this reactor dropped to 3 mg 1−1 (89% reduction) at the end of the anoxic stage. Among the three substrate added at low dose, sodium propionate was the most effective carbon source, followed by acetate and the least effective one was methanol. When the carbon substrate were added at the doses of 100 and 150 mg O2 1−1, the denitrification rates of the acetate reactors recorded at the first hour of the anoxic stage were similar to those of the propionate's and significantly higher than the methanol reactors. When high dose (150 mg O2 1−1) of acetate or propionate was used, 95% reduction in wastewater NOx-N was found after 1 h anoxic stage while 3 h anoxic stage was required when the carbon dose was at 100 mg O2 1−1, indicating that addition of external carbon substrate at large quantity could shorten the denitrification time. However, the final effluent discharged from reactors treated with high dose of acetate and propionate contained more than 20 mg 1−1 BOD5 which might cause a contamination problem. Therefore, addition of sodium acetate or propionate at the concentration equivalent to theoretical COD values of 100 mg O2 1−1 appeared to be the most economical and reliable option.
