Abstract Background Peripheral vestibular vertigo is a common cause of vertigo especially in the elderly. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a rapid and cost-effective inflammatory marker that has been assessed previously in peripheral vestibular disorders. However, its relation to the severity of peripheral vertigo has not been previously investigated. The aim of this study is to assess the levels of NLR in peripheral vestibular vertigo of various severity categories. This was a cross-sectional study at the Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital and Hasanuddin University Teaching Hospital in Makassar. The NLR was measured among subjects with periphel vestibular vertigo with severity categorised using the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) questionnaire. Results A total of 39 participants with peripheral vestibular vertigo were recruited. A statistically significant difference was found (p = 0.002, Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA) between the mean NLR for the mild, moderate, and severe DHI categories were 2.47 ± 1.66, 2.64 ± 0.96, and 5.15 ± 2.59 respectively. Conclusion A significant difference in the NLR was found between the three different vertigo severity groups, wherein NLR values rise with increase in vertigo severity. This warrants further exploration on the role of inflammatory biomarkers in vertigo pathophysiology and clinical assessment.

Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic value of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in vaginitis patients. Methods: This cross-sectional retrospective study was performed in Afyon Dinar State Hospital between July 2016 to August 2017. A total of 64 bacterial vaginosis (BV) patients, 66 vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) patients and 65 age-matched control subjects were enrolled. NLR, PLR, mean platelet volume (MPV), red cell distribution width (RDW) and other conventional inflammatory marker values were recorded for all patients before and after treatment. Results: In the BV group, NLR values were found to be elevated compared to VVC and healthy controls [2.9 (1.2-14.7), 2.1 (1.1-11.7) and 2.1 (0.8-7.0), respectively] (p=0.008). Although not found to be statistically significant, the median NLR levels of BV patients decreased from 2.9 (1.2-14.7) to 2.4 (1.2-7.0) after treatment. PLR levels did not show a statistically significant difference between the three groups (p=0.970). The cut-off value of the NLR for BV was 2.19, with 67.2% sensitivity and 63.8% specificity. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that NLR levels are elevated in bacterial vaginosis and NLR levels can be used as a reflection of systemic inflammatory response in vaginosis patients. doi: https://doi.org/10.12669/pjms.37.1.2774 How to cite this:Pek E, Beyazit F, Korkmaz NS. Previous studies have shown that neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in bacteremia is higher than nonbacteremia, therefore it could beused as a marker to distinguish both conditions in patients with sepsis .Another study on oncology patients in ICU showed a correlationbetween the severity of clinical course and the increase of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio. In physiological condition, neutrophil/lymphocyteratio <5, while in pathological conditions (severe infection or systemic inflammation) neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio increases >6.Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio is a sensitive, fast, cost effective and applicable laboratory test for routine use, therefore this test result canbe used as the parameter to assess clinical condition of patients. However, a reference value of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio has neverbeen defined, especially in Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province. The aim of this study was to know the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratioin a healthy young adult population. A cross sectional study was conducted from March to April 2014, involving residents (specialisticcandidates in Medical Faculty, Hasanuddin University, who underwwent medical checkup and voluntarily joined this study. Samplesconsisted of 198 persons who fulfilled the inclusion criteria with an age range between 24-40 years old, comprising 84 males (42.42%)and 114 females (57.58%). The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio for all samples was 1.95 (1.15-4.74). Mann Whitney test showed thatthere was no significant difference of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio between males and females, 1.88 (1.25-4.74) vs 1.95 (1.15-4.12),p=0.65 and neither between the age group 21-30 years old and 31-40 years old, 1.95 (1.21-4.74) vs 1.94 (1.15-4.09), p=0.82.

Abstract Introduction The prevalence of various diseases in the elderly has increased the use of drugs, which is coupled with age-related physiological changes and places the elderly at risk for multiple side effects. The present study aimed to determine awareness, attitudes and practices of elderly towards self-medication. Materials and Methods The sample included 300 participants over 60 years under any of the health centers in urban and rural areas of Abadeh city, who were selected based on stratified random sampling method. In order to collect data, the questionnaire including demographic information, awareness, attitude and performance of the elderly and the checklist of drug intractable consumption. Results Based on the results, 76% of the elderly reported drug consumption. Regarding lifestyle, the average score of the elderly’s awareness for the elderly who lived with and without families were 78.6±14.2 and 69.2±13.6, respectively. In other words, a significant difference was observed between these two groups. In addition, there was a significant between the elderly’s performance score with and without family members about the self-medication (p=0.001). Conclusion Considering the increase in self-medication among the elderly, adherence to prescription criteria for drug among this age group is recommended. Finally, designing and implementing various educational programs in health education center is necessary for the elderly and their families for the purpose of improving awareness and practice.

Objective. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inexpensive and easily measurable laboratory index indicating systemic inflammation, while the application of many other inflammatory markers has been limited in daily clinical practice. However, large population studies about investigating the associations of the NLR level with diabetic complications including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CVD), diabetic kidney disease (DKD), and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in the same population were limited. The aim of our study is to evaluate the associations between the NLR level and the prevalence of CVD, DKD, and DR in adults with diabetes simultaneously. Methods. A cross-sectional survey of 4,813 diabetic adults was conducted in seven communities in China. Persons underwent several medical examinations, including the measurement of anthropometric factors, blood pressure, routinely analyzed leukocyte characteristics, glucose, lipid profiles, urine albumin/creatinine ratio, and fundus photographs. Results. Compared with the first quartile of the NLR level, the odds of having CVD was significantly increased by 21% for participants in the highest quartile (OR 1.21; 95% CI 1.00, 1.47) (P for trend<0.05). Similarly, the prevalence of DKD among participants in the highest quartile of the NLR level was significantly increased by 150% (OR 2.50; 95% CI 1.95, 3.19) (P for trend<0.05). However, no association was found between the NLR level and the prevalence of DR (P for trend>0.05). These associations were all fully adjusted. Conclusions. A higher NLR level was associated with an increased prevalence of CVD and DKD, other than DR, in diabetic adults.

AbstractObjectiveTo estimate the prevalence of malnutrition among free-living elderly in a rural population of south India.DesignCross-sectional study. Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) questionnaire, which is an eighteen-item nutritional screening instrument used in the elderly.SettingKaniyambadi block, a rural development block in the state of Tamil Nadu, south India.SubjectsCommunity-dwelling elderly (aged 60 years and above).ResultsAs evaluated by the MNA, 14 % of the 227 subjects were malnourished and 49 % were at risk of malnourishment. No significant difference was found between men and women. The majority of the elderly were living with their children, had no income and consumed three meals per day. Older age (P < 0·001), decreased food intake (P < 0·001) and consuming fewer meals (P < 0·001) were independently associated with lower MNA scores.ConclusionsMore than 60 % of the subjects had low MNA scores (<23·5) indicating that deficient protein–energy intake is common among rural elderly of south India and requires more attention.

The age of patients is a controversial issue in admission to intensive care unit (ICU). The aim of this study was to compare severity and nursing workload of elderly patients with 60-69, 70-79, and e"80 years of age and to identify predictors of nursing workload in elderly patients. A cross sectional study was performed with a sample of 71 elderly patients admitted to three ICU in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil from October to November 2004. Data were prospectively collected using Nursing Activities Score (NAS) and Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPS II). There was no significant difference in nursing workload among the elderly patients age subgroups (p=0.84). Multiple regression analysis indicated that the independent risk factors of high nursing workload were severity, age e"70 years, and to be a surgical ICU patient. Age as an isolated factor should not be discriminative for elderly patients admission to ICU.
