The structural motion of a tall reinforced concrete (RC) building on alluvial soil in Nice (France) is continuously recorded using accelerometers. The structural behavior of the building is studied using operational modal analysis (OMA) to identify its dynamic properties, a finite element (FE) model to reproduce the building response, and empirical Green's functions (EGFs) to generate the structural response to ground motions stronger than those registered in the analyzed seismic area. These different approaches are applied for the analysis of seismic response of the instrumented building and results are consistent. The FE model is calibrated by comparing natural frequencies and mode shapes with those obtained using OMA. Numerically-simulated time histories are qualitatively and quantitatively compared with recordings showing good agreement. Based on regional earthquakes, linear seismic response of the building is simulated for a stronger scenario earthquake using EGF. This approach allows for structural deformation analysis of existing buildings without the need of structural plans and mechanical parameter calibration in the case where the seismic response is within linear elastic regime.

abstract The seismic response of multistory building and other structural systems is affected by the existence of self strains which may be induced by temperature gradients, mechanical actions, or prestraining. The fundamental dynamic properties such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are influenced by the presence of these strains. As a consequence, the response of the structure changes to the extent that the self strains change its dynamic characteristics and to the extent that these characteristics are relevant in the interaction of a particular structure with a given ground motion. This paper presents a detailed study of some simple structures such as beams and frames whose members are subjected to initial strains. The homogeneous differential equations of motion are expressed in terms of the stiffness, mass, and geometry matrices and a parameter accounting for the self-strain effect. The solution of the resulting eigenvalue problem is used to write the modal equations into which the desired ground motion is applied. The final response is obtained from the appropriate shock spectrum and the application of root-mean-square superposition technique. The disturbing action produced by the ground motion of the well known El Centro earthquake of 1940 is applied to several structures in which the amount of self-strain is varied as a parameter.

This paper presents an experimentally driven model updating approach to address the dynamic inaccuracy of the nominal finite element (FE) rotor model of a machining spindle supported on active magnetic bearings. Modeling error is minimized through the application of a numerical optimization algorithm to adjust appropriately selected FE model parameters. Minimizing the error of both resonance and antiresonance frequencies simultaneously accounts for rotor natural frequencies as well as for their mode shapes. Antiresonance frequencies, which are shown to heavily influence the model’s dynamic properties, are commonly disregarded in structural modeling. Evaluation of the updated rotor model is performed through comparison of transfer functions measured at the cutting tool plane, which are independent of the experimental transfer function data used in model updating procedures. Final model validation is carried out with successful implementation of robust controller, which substantiates the effectiveness of the model updating methodology for model correction.

The present study evaluates the effect of plan configuration irregularity of different L shaped models. For this, one regular and six different L-shaped RC building frames were modeled for numerical analysis. The analysis was done through an equivalent static lateral force method and response spectrum analysis (dynamic analysis). The seismic response demands were measured in terms of story displacement, inter-story drift ratio, torsional irregularity ratio, and torsional diaphragm rotation. In addition, fundamental time period of structure, vibration mode shapes and modal participating mass ratios were also studied. The study shows that the fundamental time period of structure based on standard code shows a lower value as compared to a finite element approach. It is concluded that to account for the irregularities present within the buildings, current code provisions are insufficient and should be amended.

An experimental and numerical modal analysis was performed on an 8 m2 T-shaped heliostat structure at different elevation angles. The experimental results were used to validate a finite element (FE) model by comparing natural frequencies and mode shapes. The agreement between experiments and simulations is good in all operating points investigated. In addition, damping coefficients were determined experimentally for each mode, in order to provide all necessary information for the development of a dynamic model. Furthermore, potentially critical operating conditions caused by vortex shedding were identified using a simple approach.

This paper introduces a numerical method to predict global hull girder loads of sea-going vessels, taking into account the structural elasticity. A field method based on a Finite Volume discretisation is applied to simulate the nonlinear rigid ship motions and provides the external loads at the hull surface. The structural response is computed in a full transient 3D-Finite-Element Analysis. The lowest global structural mode shapes and eigenfrequencies are covered by the 3D-FE model. The mapping between the Finite Volume mesh and Finite Element grid, is performed by the Mesh-Based Code Coupling Interface (MpCCI). As long as only global vertical bending modes are considered, simplified beam models may sufficiently cover the structural response. However, the use of the 3D-FE model is motivated by the prediction of the global torsional and local loads that are influenced by hydroelastic effects. A 1-way coupling method is applied. To account for hydromass effects, the Finite-Element model is enhanced by acoustic elements. Acoustic wave equations are solved to simulate the sound wave propagation in water and to obtain realistic eigenfrequencies of the wetted hull. Structural and hydrodynamic damping is controlled by the Rayleigh-Damping method. Simulations are performed for an ultra large container vessel sailing in regular head waves. The computed time histories of the vertical bending moment are compared with experimental data and with numerical simulations using a strong 2-way coupling simulation that employs a Finite-Element Timoshenko-Beam.

Predicting structural radiated noise is a process that involves several steps, often including the development of a finite element (FE) model to provide structural response predictions. Limitations of these FE models often govern the success of overall noise predictions. The purpose of the present investigation is to identify the effects of real world attachments on edge-stiffened plates and identify advanced modeling methods to facilitate vibroacoustic analyses of such complex structures. A combination of experimental and numerical methods is used in the evaluation. The results show the effects of adding attachments to the edge-stiffened plate in terms of mode shape mass loading, creation of new mode shapes, modifications to original mode shapes, and variations in damping levels. A finite element model of the edge-stiffened plate with simplified attachments has been developed and is used in conjunction with experimental data to aid in the developments. The investigation presented here represents a necessary first step toward implementing an advanced modeling technique.

Dynamic properties of the whole broaching machine structure greatly contribute to the broaching quality and efficiency. However, it is hard to measure the dynamic parameters because they will change during operation compared with the static results from classic experimental modal analysis. This study is to examine the dynamic parameters of broaching machine LG7120KT using both the numerical finite element (FE) method and the experimental operational modal analysis (OMA). Firstly, FE analysis model of the broaching machine with the real dimension is constructed and calculated. Second, experimental results are obtained from OMA in practical broaching process, which can be used to identify steady-state modes. Modal parameters including mode shapes, damping ratio, and natural frequencies are examined, using both LMS SCADAS III-305 system and PolyMAX method in OMA. The numerical and experimental results show high agreement in their calculated natural frequencies. From the modal analysis results, it is also found the vibration normal to cutting direction can be greatly reduced by adjusting broaching speed. From the topology optimization result based on the already correlated FE model, we redesigned a lightweight machine structure with a better dynamic performance, due to its lower displacement of broaching machine at force point and its higher first-order natural frequency. The experimental and numerical results in this paper help to design the structural parameters of broaching machine and propose a better broaching process.

Dams are essential infrastructures as they provide a range of economic, environmental, and social benefits to the local populations. Damage in the body of these structures may lead to an irreparable disaster. This paper presents a cost-effective vibration-based framework to identify the dynamic properties and damage of the dams. To this end, four commonly occurred damage scenarios, including (1) damage in the neck of the dam, (2) damage in the toe of the structure, (3) simultaneous damage in the neck and the toe of the dam, and (4) damage in the lifting joints of the dam, are considered. The proposed method is based on processing the acceleration response of a gravity dam under ambient excitations. First, the random decrement technique (RDT) is applied to determine the free-vibration of the structure using the structural response. Then, a combined method based on Hilbert–Huang Transform (HHT) and Wavelet Transform (WT) is presented to obtain the dynamic properties of the structure. Next, the cubic-spline technique is used to make the mode shapes differentiable. Finally, Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is applied to the residual values of mode shape curvatures between intact and damaged structures to estimate the damage location. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method in field condition, 10% noise is added to the structural response. Results show promising accuracy in estimating the location of damage even when the structure is subjected to simultaneous damage in different locations.

This paper is focused on the analysis of effects of mistuning on the forced response of gas turbine engine bladed disks vibrating in the frequency ranges corresponding to higher modes. For high modes considered here, the blade aerofoils are deformed during vibrations and the blade mode shapes differ significantly from beam mode shapes. A model reduction technique is developed for the computationally efficient and accurate analysis of forced response for bladed disks vibrating in high-frequency ranges. The high-fidelity finite element (FE) model of a tuned bladed disk sector is used to provide primary information about dynamic properties of a bladed disk, and the blade mistuning is modeled by specially defined mistuning matrices. The forced response displacement and stress amplitude levels are studied. The effects of different types of mistuning are examined, and the existence of high amplifications of mistuned forced response levels is shown for high-mode vibrations: in some cases, the resonance peak response of a tuned structure can be lower than out-of-resonance amplitudes of its mistuned counterpart.
