In order to study the cracks resisting mechanism of large stone asphalt mixture base, a multi-layer elastic theory program was used to calculate the loading stress in different pavement structures. Then a Finite Element model was established based on a twinkling heat conduct hypothesis to calculate temperature stress and strain of pavement structure when temperature dropped. Finally, the stress and strain of all the structural layers was calculated considering the coupling effect of loading and temperature. It is found that temperature stress which is caused by temperate quick dropped is far more lager than loading stress cause by standard loading, while considering the co-effect of vehicle loading and temperature quickly dropped. Thus it is revealed that cracking in pavement is mainly caused by temperature quickly dropped. By contrast, it is found that pavement stress and strain caused by loading and temperature of the structure with asphalt macadam mixture (ATB30) base are less than that of the conventional semi-rigid pavement. Finally, an asphalt macadam mixture base applied in asphalt pavement structure is believed to be an efficient way in reducing asphalt pavement cracking.

Performance of Large Stone Porous Asphalt- Rubber Mixture(LSPARM)was studied in laboratory. Hamburg wheel tracking test, low temperature indirect tensile test and bending fatigue test were conducted to evaluate the high temperature performance of resistance to rutting, moisture susceptibility, low temperature performance of resistance to cracking and anti-fatigue performance of LSPARM and the test results were compared with the conventional large stone porous asphalt mixture using one polymer modified asphalt (control mixture). The test results indicate that LSPARM has better performance than the control mixture and it could be used as stress absorbing layers of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement.

In order to improve the durability of the asphalt pavement on a cement concrete bridge, this study investigated the effect of the modulus of the asphalt mixture at the bottom layer on the mechanical response of bridge pavement, along with a type of emerging bridge pavement structure. In addition, the design method and pavement performance of a high-modulus asphalt mixture were investigated using laboratory and field tests, and the life expectancy of the deck pavement structure was predicted based on the rutting deformation. The results showed that the application of a high-modulus asphalt mixture as the bottom asphalt layer decreased the stress level of the pavement structure. The new high-modulus asphalt mixture displayed excellent comprehensive performance, i.e., the dynamic stability reached 9632 times/mm and the fatigue life reached 1.65 million cycles. Based on the rutting depth prediction, using high-modulus mixtures for the bridge pavement prolonged the service life from the original 5 years to 10 years, which significantly enhanced the durability of the pavement structure. These research results could be of potential interest for practical applications in the construction industry.

Porous asphalt mixture can be used as a road surface paving material with the remarkable advantage to prevent water accumulation and ponding. However, the performance of porous asphalt mixture in low temperature environment has not been thoroughly investigated, and this forms the subject of research in the present study. The mineral aggregate gradation of porous asphalt mixture was designed based on Bailey method, and the low temperature performance of porous asphalt mixture was studied by means of the low temperature bending test. The factors affecting the low temperature performance of porous asphalt mixture were analyzed through the orthogonal experimental design method, and the effects of porosity, modifier content, aging condition, and test temperature on the low temperature performance of porous asphalt mixture were evaluated. The results showed that the modifier content was the most important factor affecting the low temperature performance of porous asphalt mixture, followed by the test temperature, while the porosity and the aging condition were the least. Among the three performance evaluation indicators, namely the flexural tensile strength, maximum bending strain, and bending stiffness modulus, the maximum bending strain had the highest sensitivity to the porosity. It can be seen from the single factor influence test of porosity that there existed an approximately linear relationship between the maximum bending strain and the porosity of porous asphalt mixture, and the maximum bending strain decreased with increasing porosity. Furthermore, in order to ensure the good working performance of porous asphalt mixture in low temperature environment, the porosity should also satisfy the required limits of the maximum bending strain.

As vehicle flow on arterial highway in Inner Mongolia sharply increased, the originally designed natural increase rate of 8% per year has been exceeded on the vehicle flow in some sections. According to statistics, monthly average vehicle flow on major section of G6 expressway has reached a standard flow of 67478 vehicles per day and night, of which in 70-80% are large ones for coal transportation. Therefore, pavement load and road capacity have exceed the designed expressway load capacity. At present, semi-rigid base asphalt pavement structure is still widely used for high-grade highway pavement in Inner Mongolia. With years of construction for such pavement structure, a great deal of valuable experience has been gained on construction technology. However, there are still a few deficiencies in the quality of raw materials, gradation control of asphalt mixture and adjustment of equipment, etc. Hohhot circle expressway connects with the G6 and G7 expressways, suffering from problems such as large vehicle flow and load overweight. This paper introduced a key technique that should be properly controlled during construction of such pavement structure, emphasized technique control and management of the following aspects, i.e. ballast sizes and gradation control, asphalt concrete mixture, adjustment of pavers, validation of mixing proportion in production and reasonable arrangement of process, and summarized corresponding technical measures taken during construction of asphalt pavement in this project.
