The business unit's black tea processing of Perkebunan Nusantara suffered a loss of approximately Rp.60 billion. This is caused by the failure to achieve the quality and quantity of production which has been targeted by the management. Black tea processing factory "Pahit Madu" is required to improve the performance of the production process. To improve the production of black tea starts from improved production equipment through improved equipment utilization. One method ofmeasuring the effectiveness of using an apparatus is Overall EquipmentEffectiveness (OEE). OEE calculation results show that black tea factory "Pahit Madu" for four (4) years under the standard. Means, the effectiveness of utilization of equipment in the factory black tea "Pahit Madu" was still very low. This was shown by the low performance equipment in the milling unit, drying unit and sortation unit. Toimprove the performance of the plant should begin by increasing the Cutting Tearing Curling (CTC) machine in milling stations, machines Fluid Bed Dryer (FBD) and Heat Exchanger (HE) at the drying stations, and Winnower machines at the sortation stations.

The drying unit of a continuous from-powder-to-tablet manufacturing line based on twin-screw granulation (TSG) is a crucial intermediate process step to achieve the desired tablet quality. Understanding the size reduction of pharmaceutical granules before, during, and after the fluid bed drying process is, however, still lacking. A first major goal was to investigate the breakage and attrition phenomena during transport of wet and dry granules, the filling phase, and drying phase on a ConsiGma-25 system (C25). Pneumatic transport of the wet granules after TSG towards the dryer induced extensive breakage, whereas the turbulent filling and drying phase of the drying cells caused rather moderate breakage and attrition. Subsequently, the dry transfer line was responsible for additional extensive breakage and attrition. The second major goal was to compare the influence of drying air temperature and drying time on granule size and moisture content for granules processed with a commercial-scale ConsiGma-25 system and with the R&D-scale ConsiGma-1 (C1) system. Generally, the granule quality obtained after drying with C1 was not predictive for the C25, making it challenging during process development with the C1 to obtain representative granules for the C25.

This study concerned the quality of mini-tablets’ coating uniformity obtained by either the bottom spray chamber with a classical Wurster distributor (CW) or a swirl distributor (SW). Mini-tablets with a diameter of 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mm were coated with hypromellose using two different inlet air distributors as well as inlet airflow rates (130 and 156 m3/h). Tartrazine was used as a colorant in the coating layer and the coating uniformity was assessed by spectrophotometric analysis of solutions obtained after disintegration of the mini-tablets (n = 100). Higher uniformity of coating material distribution among the mini-tablets was observed in the case of SW distributor, even for the biggest mini-tablets (d = 3.0 mm), with an RSD no larger than 5.0%. Additionally, coating thickness was evaluated by colorimetric analysis (n = 1000), using a scanner method, and expressed as a hue value. A high correlation (R = 0.993) between inter-tablet variability of hue and UV-Vis results was obtained. Mini-tablets were successfully coated in a fluid bed system using both a classical Wurster distributor as well as a swirl generator. However, regardless of the mini-tablets’ diameter, better film uniformity was achieved in the case of a distributor with a swirl generator.
