AbstractThe detachment and abandonment of Latin American historic cities appear as a recurrent problem, despite the multiple regeneration projects that have been implemented in recent decades. In this context, we analyze the incidence of this type of project on the sense of belonging and appropriation of four public spaces: three plazas and one park, located in the Historic Center of Cuenca in Ecuador. The objective is to identify and study the relationship between the physical-spatial and usage characteristics with the user and his perception, in order to correct and enhance future interventions. A methodology with a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach is used, through the development of tools that allow analyzing the sense of belonging and appropriation of the users after the regeneration projects. It is found that both, the plazas and the park studied, are mostly used for transit and their users do not feel identified with them, mainly due to the lack of daily activities that neighborhood life, a situation linked to the loss of housing and diversity of uses. Finally, we conclude with a series of recommendations that seek to foster a sense of belonging and appropriation in public spaces in heritage areas. Keywords: Attachment, urban life, patrimonialization.

This paper addresses the concepts of public and private with regard to the use of Christian online boards. Drawing from an empirical study on religious Internet use, including qualitative and quantitative data, this article asks to what extent these boards can be characterised as new public spaces for exchange about religion, or as enhancing private engagement with religion. While media characteristics of online discussion boards encourage their understanding as public spaces, at the same time actual usage patterns mirror an increasing privatisation of religion. Instead of opting for either a public or private characterisation of online boards, this article proposes to disentangle both attributions and relate these findings to the larger debate on contemporary religion in terms of public and private.

The regenerative potential of a city as an ever- changing complex system is revealed by the evaluation results of the potentials of its subsystems. To reach this aim, method of fractal analysis can be used, which not only reveals the form properties of an evaluated structure but its functionality as well. The urban potential is understood as meta-functional possibilities of city territories, which are determined by fractal indexes of structures (as generators of streams), streets (as connections between generators), greenery (as eco-compensational territories and green generators of streams in bipolar system of meta-functional zones of a city) and public spaces (as generators of streams and spaces of communications). Using this method, evaluation of potential of Kaunas urban structures was performed. The results of the analysis allowed identifying meta-functional zones of Kaunas city: urban frame, nature frame and background areas with unused potential of urban qualitative and quantitative development, indicating the weak sides of their urban morphological structure. The results also allowed identifying complex parameters of a spatial code of valuable urban areas that can be applied regulating use of the territories.

AbstractTo generate a sense of ownership by the user should be a prime consideration for any urban intervention, a feature that public spaces should have. However, what happens with the spaces that already exist?, what kind of feelings do they generate in their users?, what are the features that these spaces should have to generate this feeling? These are the questions and points of departure for the implementation of this Final Master Thesis. The reason why three public spaces boulevards are chosen within city of Madrid, to develop a practical, qualitative and quantitative exercise in which users are surveyed to identify, according to their uses, profiles, benefits and importance, the degree of ownership felt by users towards these spaces. This paper seeks to be an approximation to the feeling that a given space generates to its most frequent users. Identifying their perceptions, the routines they perform and defining their level of feeling of belongingness.KeywordsPublic space, boulevard, belongingness, urban symbolism, user, survey.

An urban sensory lab (USL or LUS an acronym in Spanish) is a new and avant-garde approach for studying and analyzing a city. The construction of this approach allows the development of new methodologies to identify the emotional response of public space users. The laboratory combines qualitative analysis proposed by urbanists and quantitative measures managed by data analysis applications. USL is a new approach to go beyond the borders of urban knowledge. The design thinking strategy allows us to implement methods to understand the results provided by our technique. In this first approach, the interpretation is made by hand. However, our goal is to combine design thinking and machine learning in order to analyze the qualitative and quantitative data automatically. Now, the results are being used by students from the Urbanism and Architecture courses in order to get a better understanding of public spaces in Puebla, Mexico and its interaction with people.

Little is known about the temporal expression of extracellular matrix components (ECM) and its receptors during development of the heart. Recent reports have shown that ECM components undergo both qualitative and quantitative changes during development, and it is believed that ECM components are important in the regulation of cell migration and cell:cell and cell:ECM recognition and adhesion.Integrins are transmembrane glycoproteins which bind several ECM components on their external face and cytoskeletal elements on the cytoplasmic face. Laminin is a basement membrane component which has been recognized as an important site for cell adhesion. Both the integrins and laminin are expressed early in development and continue to be expressed in the adult heart. With their documented roles in cell recognition, and cell:cell and cell:ECM migration and adhesion these proteins appear to be important components in development of the heart, and their temporal expression may play a pivotal role in morphogenesis and myofibrillogenesis of the heart.
