Multidimensional NMR intrinsically provides multiple probes that can be used for deciphering the folding pathways of proteins: NH amide and CH groups are strategically located on the backbone of the protein, while CH3 groups, on the side-chain of methylated residues, are involved in important stabilizing interactions in the hydrophobic core. Combined with high hydrostatic pressure, these observables provide a powerful tool to explore the conformational landscapes of proteins. In the present study, we made a comparative assessment of the NH, CH, and CH3 groups for analyzing the unfolding pathway of ∆+PHS Staphylococcal Nuclease. These probes yield a similar description of the folding pathway, with virtually identical thermodynamic parameters for the unfolding reaction, despite some notable differences. Thus, if partial unfolding begins at identical pressure for these observables (especially in the case of backbone probes) and concerns similar regions of the molecule, the residues involved in contact losses are not necessarily the same. In addition, an unexpected slight shift toward higher pressure was observed in the sequence of the scenario of unfolding with CH when compared to amide groups.

AbstractThe isostructural compounds Tl4TiS4, Tl4SnS4 and Tl4TiSe4 crystallize in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c with a = 8.328, b = 8.191, c = 15.248 Å, β = 104.53°; a = 8.395, b = 8.280, c = 15.398 A, ft = 103.69°, and a = 8.517, b = 8.389, c = 15.672 Å, β = 103.50°, respectively. There are four formula units in the unit cell. The crystal structures were determined and refined from single crystal diffractometer data. They are characterized by isolated tetrahedral thioanions which are connected with each other by Tl+ ions. The mean bond lengths are Ti-S = 2.26 Å, Sn-S = 2.40 Å and Ti -Se = 2.38 Å. The Tl atoms are surrounded by six and seven chalcogen atoms, respectively, in an irregular and polar arrangement, thus indicating stereochemical activity of the lone electron pair of the Tl+ ions. Tl-S distances vary from 2.93 to 3.98 Å, Tl-Se distances from 3.03 to 3.96 Å. The Tl atoms have nearest Tl neighbours at distances ranging from 3.46 to 3.65 Å. The crystal structure can be described as built from pseudotetragonal slabs oriented parallel to (001) which contain the cations and the tetrahedral anions. It is shown that a similar description is valid also for the crystal structures of Tl4GeS4 [1] and Na4SnS4 [2, 3].

AbstractA classical result of M. Zorn states that a finite group is nilpotent if and only if it satisfies an Engel condition. If this is the case, it satisfies almost all Engel conditions. We shall give a similar description of the class of p-soluble groups of p-length one by a sequence of commutator identities.

It is well known that the law of a Brownian motion started from x > 0 and conditioned never to hit 0 is identical with the law of a three-dimensional Bessel process started from x. Here we show that a similar description is valid for all linear Ornstein–Uhlenbeck Brownian motions. Further, using the same techniques, it is seen that we may construct a non-stationary Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process from a stationary one.

Abstract Objective Large and complex terminologies, such as Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine–Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT), are prone to errors and inconsistencies. Abstraction networks are compact summarizations of the content and structure of a terminology. Abstraction networks have been shown to support terminology quality assurance. In this paper, we introduce an abstraction network derivation methodology which can be applied to SNOMED CT target hierarchies whose classes are defined using only hierarchical relationships (ie, without attribute relationships) and similar description-logic-based terminologies. Methods We introduce the tribal abstraction network (TAN), based on the notion of a tribe—a subhierarchy rooted at a child of a hierarchy root, assuming only the existence of concepts with multiple parents. The TAN summarizes a hierarchy that does not have attribute relationships using sets of concepts, called tribal units that belong to exactly the same multiple tribes. Tribal units are further divided into refined tribal units which contain closely related concepts. A quality assurance methodology that utilizes TAN summarizations is introduced. Results A TAN is derived for the Observable entity hierarchy of SNOMED CT, summarizing its content. A TAN-based quality assurance review of the concepts of the hierarchy is performed, and erroneous concepts are shown to appear more frequently in large refined tribal units than in small refined tribal units. Furthermore, more erroneous concepts appear in large refined tribal units of more tribes than of fewer tribes. Conclusions In this paper we introduce the TAN for summarizing SNOMED CT target hierarchies. A TAN was derived for the Observable entity hierarchy of SNOMED CT. A quality assurance methodology utilizing the TAN was introduced and demonstrated.

The idea that people can improve their welfare by trading can be found in the late Ming work of the high-ranking official Qiu Jun (1420–1495) in an oft-cited text called Daxue yanyi bu (Supplement to the Exposition on the Great Learning), which was presented to the emperor in 1487. Qiu Jun starts by explaining that a market is “a central place where people whose conditions of livelihood allow them to produce more of one thing and less of another met to exchange their surplus with those whose different conditions of livelihood provided them with different surpluses and lacks.” Modern economics textbooks have a very similar description of markets. A “market” denotes a time and place where people have agreed to meet to buy or sell goods or services through money or barter. Markets are important for increasing the immediate welfare of the buyer and seller. Descriptive histories of markets in China also provide us with a sense of whether trade is voluntary or controlled, and who is controlling the market; both are important for understanding changes in market efficiency over time. This bibliography surveys studies on the market in China, spanning the period from the Tang dynasty to the Republican period, focusing on commodity markets rather than factor markets (e.g., labor markets or land markets). Over the past several decades, researchers have accumulated increasing evidence of the nature and the function of markets in China, their scope, and the efficiency of marketplace transactions in comparison to other advanced areas of the world as of the mid-18th century. One of the key implications that has emerged from this research is that despite the presence of an autocratic state, markets were functioning relatively well in China in the premodern period. More recently researchers are starting also to come to a better understanding of China’s role in the world economy in history, and, more controversially, the impact of Western imperialism on China’s integration with global markets from the 19th century to today.

The JISP16 nucleon-nucleon potential is applied to investigate the nucleon induced deuteron breakup reaction at energies E=13 and 65 MeV. Our study reveals that this force delivers, in general, a qualitatively similar description of the exclusive cross section for the studied reaction to the one based on the standard realistic nucleon-nucleon AV18 interaction. However, in some regions of the phase space the differential cross sections based on the JISP16 and on the AV18 forces differ by more than 100% and 50% at E=13 MeV and E=65 MeV, respectively. Such specific parts of the phase space can be used to fine-tune the JISP16 potential parameters.

It would be a mistake to attempt to identify in modern terms the disease of Galerius described so graphically by Lactantius, Mort. 33 (cf. the similar description at Eus. H.E. 8.16). Consumption by lice or worms, if not genital ‘gangrene’, was a typical end for a tyrant or the impious, and there must be an element of literary exaggeration in Lactantius' account. But whatever one makes of the nature of the illness, Lactantius did set out to give the passage a scientific plausibility by his use of technical medical phraseology, and by an allusion to a medical theory at 33.7. Recognition of this theory allows one to settle the text at one point, where editors have failed to agree. There is also a second place in the chapter where familiarity with medical Latin points one towards the solution of a textual problem.

Throughout this century social psychology has tended to swing between an individualistic orientation and an emphasis on group processes. Floyd Allport over a span of 50 yr. has wrestled with the problem of the appropriate approach of social psychology to its subject matter, labelling the question “the master problem.” Issues relating to assumptions, methods, and units of observation are discussed, and the development of trends in this dichotomization are traced. Allport's individualistic behaviorism is pitted against other theorists of moderate and opposing opinions. It is argued that Sherif's group-approach anchors the other end of the continuum. Finally an argument is presented that the two theorists are not irreconcilable, and that each position has ultimately led to a similar description of collectivities.
