In a given manufacturing setting where workers or robots are coexisting in a confined area and their movements are not coordinated due to loss in communication or because they are freely ranging relative to each other, the development of an onboard safeguard system for a robot becomes a necessity to reduce accidents while the production efficiency is uncompromised. This article develops a two-dimensional dynamics model that predicts the relative position between a robot’s end-of-arm tooling and an approaching object or threat. The safety strategy applied to the robot is derived from the calculation of three parameters: the time of collision predicted from the linear motion between the approaching object and the robot’s end-of-arm tooling, the relative absolute distance, and the overlapping area ratio. These parameters combined are updated in a cost function that is sufficiently alarming the collision severity of an approaching object in real time. This model enables deployment a safe and a productive collaborative interaction in the manufacturing environment where workers and robots are seemingly moving in close proximity within an open workspace with less safeguard barriers.

In a preparatory study of structural relaxations and plastic flow in a two-dimensional idealized atomic glass, the process of melting and quenching through a glass transition has been studied by computer simulation using a molecular dynamics model. In this model, the transition from a solid to a melt was observed to take place when liquid-like structural elements composed of dipoles of five- and seven-sided Voronoi polygons percolate through the two-dimensional structure of distorted hexagons in the form of strings. Such dipoles constitute discrete elements of excess free volume within which liquid like behaviour is established in the sense of reduced cohesion or local elastic moduli. Upon quenching the melt, the percolation condition of liquid-like regions is retained for under-cooled melts between the melting point and a glass transition temperature below which the percolation condition is broken and the thermal expansion is sharply reduced. The simulation that has used empirical pair potentials characteristic of Cu and Zr has substantially underpredicted the melting and glass transition temperatures and overpredicted the thermal expansion of C u x Zr 1-x type glasses. These defects of the model can be partly attributed to the two-dimensional nature of the material, which stores larger concentrations of free volume than a corresponding three-dimensional material. In spite of these quantitative shortcomings, the model gives valuable insight into the topological features of the local atomic configurations at melting and upon vitrification.

Abstract The stability characteristics of the surface quasigeostrophic shielded Rankine vortex are found using a linearized contour dynamics model. Both the normal modes and nonmodal evolution of the system are analyzed and the results are compared with two previous studies. One is a numerical study of the instability of smooth surface quasigeostrophic vortices with which qualitative similarities are found and the other is a corresponding study for the two-dimensional Euler system with which several notable differences are highlighted.

For the study on the eutrophication problem in Taihu Lake of China, an ecological dynamics model of algae growth is established based on the simulation of the growth of the dominating algae in Taihu Lake. Chlorophyll-a (chl-a), total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) are chosen to be the water quality variables. The main factors influencing the algae growth in Taihu Lake are investigated by the sensitivity analysis of the model’s parameters. The results show that the maximum growth rate of algae, the algae respiration rate, the coefficients of temperature influence and the half saturation constant for phosphorus have significant influences on the simulation results. Temperature and TP are the dominating factors of influencing the algae growth in Taihu Lake.

In this paper, we construct a model to describe the spatial motion of a monolayer of cells occupying a two-dimensional dish. By taking care of nonlocal contact inhibition, quiescence phenomenon, and the cell cycle, we derive porous media-like equation with nonlocal reaction terms. The first part of this paper is devoted to the construction of the model. In the second part we study the well-posedness of the model. We conclude the paper by presenting some numerical simulations of the model and we observe the formation of colonies.

A two-dimensional dynamics model of an elliptic cylinder is derived by using the lattice Boltzmann method. With the present model, we have simulated the sedimentation of a single charged elliptic cylinder in a two-dimensional tube in a Newtonian fluid. Due to the polarizing effects and non-axial symmetry shape, there are the Coulomb force and the Coulomb torque on the elliptic cylinder during the sedimentation, which change its ordinary motion significantly. Comparing with the sedimentation of an un-charged elliptic cylinder under the same initial condition, we have further discussed the dynamics characteristics of the charged elliptic cylinder, and obtained some interesting results.
