University undergraduate pro- grams in computing disciplines are updated regularly to adapt to advancements in the field and emerging, fast-growing industry demand. This paper reports the current status of a selected set of undergraduate programs in com- puting fields in Saudi Arabia and compares them to other programs from international universi- ties in light of the 2020 Computing Curricula Report (CCR). This comparative study aims to enlighten future efforts for designing cur- ricula and updating undergraduate computing programs in Saudi Arabia. A sample of 26 Saudi universities (15 public and 11 private) and 15 international universities offering 161 programs is selected. The comparison criteria include program discipline, duration, number of units, accreditation, required training, and others. We find significant differences between programs offered by Saudi public and private universities compared to international university programs. For example, programs offered by Saudi universities, especially the public, require more units compared to international programs (median of 143 units vs. 120 units). Our findings would guide future undergraduate computing program developments in Saudi Arabia.

This paper examines the risk factors of the Saudi Arabian equity market using an extensive data set. The study demonstrates which risk factors explain mutual fund returns in the largest mutual fund market in the Middle East, a fast-growing economy and a major player in the oil market. This paper also assesses the global and emerging market risk factors. This study analyzes 256 equity funds that operated in Saudi Arabia from January 2006 to July 2017. Time series regression models (e.g., the CAPM, the Fama and French three-factor model and the Carhart four-factor model) are used. In addition, modified versions of the asset pricing models were applied by adding stock market volatility and oil market volatility. The results indicate that the single-factor model, representing the market portfolio, captures most of the mutual funds’ excess returns. Size, value and momentum factors do not enhance the explanatory power of mutual fund returns significantly. The emerging market risk factors capture a small portion of the return variations where most effects were explained by the market risk factor. In explaining these results, we emphasize the important implications for investors, academics and regulators to better understand the risk factors that drive fund returns in a fast-growing emerging market.

Abstract.Background: Establishing understanding of infants’ dietary intakes can support interventions to improve their diets and overall health. Because information on the dietary intakes of infants aged ≤12 months in Saudi Arabia is scarce, this study examined the diets of infants aged 6 and 12 months in Saudi Arabia and determined their main dietary sources of total energy and macronutrients. Methods: A crosssectional dietary survey employing a single 24-hour recall was performed between May and December 2015 with a sample of mothers of 278 healthy 6-month-old and 259 12-month-old infants. An analysis of the dietary intake data determined the nutrient intake adequacy and the percentage contributions of foods to energy and macronutrient intakes. Results: The respective mean daily energy intakes of the 6-month-old and 12-month-old infants in the study were 703 kcal and 929 kcal. Both age groups recorded adequate nutrient intakes, with the exception that the 6-month-olds’ mean vitamin D intake fell below the recommended Adequate Intake (AI), and the 12-month-olds’ intakes of omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin D were also below the AI, along with their iron intake which fell short of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Conclusion: The data generated here will assist health professionals in planning interventions which aim to improve infants’ diets and to offer guidance to parents on the appropriate selection of food for their infants.

Abstract. Background: Medical students are at high risk of suicidal ideation. Aim: We aimed to obtain information on suicidal ideation among medical students in Dammam located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the College of Medicine affiliated with Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Suicidal ideation in the past 12 months was assessed based on responses to four questions in the depression subscale of the General Health Questionnaire 28 (GHQ-28). In addition, data were collected to examine the association of suicidal ideation with various factors. Results: We found that 1 in 3 medical students in the study had suicidal ideation in the past 12 months, while around 40% had lifetime suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation was associated with feelings of parental neglect, history of physical abuse, and dissatisfaction with academic performance. Limitations: The cross-sectional nature of this study limits its ability to determine causality regarding suicidal ideation. Conclusion: These rates are considerably high when compared with rates from studies in other countries around the world. This study provides a reference in the field of suicidology for this region of Saudi Arabia.
