Investigation into steering wheel nibble

Many studies of mechanisms contributing to steering wheel nibble have been carried out in the past. This paper deals with some aspects that have not yet been studied, or those that have been presented by several authors but are deemed to be controversial. Firstly, an overview of stimulation sources (disturbance factors), and the significance these have with respect to steering nibble, is given. As an example of the controversial aspects of the problem, this paper deals with the assumption of dry friction in steering gear models and its conflict with the observed transfer of vibration caused by small (realistic) amounts of imbalance or tyre force variation. After modelling the steering gear resistance correctly, it is possible to identify, in the steering gear, a natural frequency that contributes reasonably to the nibble phenomenon. Based on this new model, a CAE study on parameter sensitivity, using the ‘design of experiments’ approach, is presented.

In this article, television is reconsidered as a hybrid ‘repertoire’ ofmemory. It is demonstrated how new dynamic production and scheduling practicesin connection with highly accessible and participatory forms of user engagementoffer opportunities for television users to engage with the past, and how suchpractices affect television as a practice of memory. The media platform HollandDoc is discussed as a principal casestudy. By adopting and expanding Aleida Assmann’s model of the dynamics ofcultural memory between remembering and forgetting, a new model to studytelevision as cultural memory is proposed which represents the medium’shybridity in the multi-platform era.

The Copley Medal is awarded to Sir Ronald Fisher, F. R. S. The rise of quantitative biology, which has been so noteworthy a feature of this century and especially of the past thirty years or so, has been due above all to the work of R. A. Fisher. The variability of living things posed problems and raised difficulties in the interpretation of experimental and observational data which made necessary something beyond the methods of the physical sciences. They required in fact a new approach to inductive inference, and one which would provide means of drawing conclusions of assessable reliability from variable material often available only in small samples. It is to Fisher’s combination of mathematical skill and biological insight that we owe the developments, both theoretical and practical, which have done so much towards solving this problem and so making biologists of virtually every kind quantitative in their experiments, their analysis, and, most important of all, their thought. Faced with the agronomical problems of Rothamsted, whose staff he joined in 1919, Fisher began the remarkable series of statistical investigations which gave us the techniques described in Statistical methods , the tabular matter of Statistical tables (published with F. Yates) for facilitating their use, and the philosophy of Design of experiments by which they may be understood, appreciated and extended. The outcome has not merely stood the test of time in those branches of biology with which he was immediately concerned, but has had an ever-widening influence which now extends even beyond the borders of biology itself. And in building the new biometry, Fisher has given especially to the younger biologists a confidence and quantitative outlook whose full effects we have still to see.

In a previous study of over two hundred ancient sites, the alignments of almost half of the sites could not be explained. These sites are distributed throughout the world and include the majority of Mesoamerican pyramids and temples that are misaligned with respect to true north, megalithic structures at several sites in Peru’s Sacred Valley, some pyramids in Lower Egypt, and numerous temples in Upper Egypt. A new model is proposed to account for the alignment of certain unexplained sites based on an application of Charles Hapgood’s hypothesis that global patterns of climate change over the past 100,000 years could be the result of displacements of the Earth’s crust and corresponding shifts of the geographic poles. It is shown that over 80% of the unexplained sites reference four locations within 30° of the North Pole that are correlated with Hapgood’s hypothesized pole locations. The alignments of these sites are consistent with the hypothesis that if they were built in alignment with one of these former poles they would be misaligned to north as they are now as the result of subsequent pole shifts.

AbstractIn-car passive stress sensing could enable the monitoring of stress biomarkers while driving and reach millions of commuters daily (i.e., 123 million daily commuters in the US alone). Here, we present a nonintrusive method to detect stress solely from steering angle data of a regular car. The method uses inverse filtering to convert angular movement data into a biomechanical Mass Spring Damper model of the arm and extracts its damped natural frequency as an approximation of muscle stiffness, which in turn reflects stress. We ran a within-subject study (N = 22), in which commuters drove a vehicle around a closed circuit in both stress and calm conditions. As hypothesized, cohort analysis revealed a significantly higher damped natural frequency for the stress condition (P = .023, d = 0.723). Subsequent automation of the method achieved rapid (i.e., within 8 turns) stress detection in the individual with a detection accuracy of 77%.

This paper tries to look at the irreverent phenomena that occur in students today, and to find a way out through a series of events in the past with the value of local wisdom in the past. There are two things (more precisely an offer) to be conveyed in this paper in solving this problem. First, an explanation of the value of local wisdom contained in pappasang to riolo, the second tells about the exemplary suri to-riolo (ancestors). These two things are integrated into the historical material and conveyed to students so that students with character can be created. This paper uses a qualitative research method with an anthropological-historical approach in seeing the character (value) of students who experience moral degradation. The results of this study are a new model of character education approach using culture as a role model.

Abstract Steering wheel vibrations are frequently related to non-uniformities of the tire/wheel system. While steering system design is a major factor in the sensitivity of the vehicle, the excitation of steering wheel vibrations is due in general to non-uniformities of the tire/wheel system. However, tire non-uniformities are to some extent unavoidable and result in rolling force variation at the spindle during steady state rolling. Therefore, limiting and managing these non-uniformities is of great economic importance to tire manufacturers. The present work demonstrates the tire's role in generating non-uniformity induced dynamic force variations due to 1st order geometric imperfections. Both analytical and numerical approaches are studied. Numerical experiments of the effects of non-uniformities are investigated with the physics based tire model FTIRE. The effects of tire resonance on the non-uniformity force amplitudes are demonstrated through modeling and simulation. The model is then verified using experimental data and the distribution of geometric non-uniformities is studied in a large tire sample based on force measurement data and the model fit. A MSC.ADAMS model of a light truck is combined with non-uniform FTIRE models to study the effect of geometric non-uniformities on steering wheel vibrations. The simulations show that the angular acceleration of the steering wheel around its steer-axis is primarily dependent on force variations in the longitudinal direction (T1H). The effects of phasing, increase in inertia and tire position on the steering wheel vibrations are also discussed.

Recent transdisciplinary attempts to theorize an ethics of memory have centred on concepts such as melancholia, haunting and trauma. Despite being pathological states, they have paradoxically been posited as markers of ‘remembrance’ that signal the subject's ethical refusal to ‘move on’. If Algerian author Assia Djebar's literary output has, since 1995, been concerned with such tropes, I argue that her most recent narrative, Nulle part dans la maison de mon père (2007), marks a shift away from such thinking. Rather than focusing on the spectralized others of Algerian history, Djebar's autofictional narrative enacts a return to the self. In doing so, it postulates a new model of relationality between self and other that moves beyond the limitations of melancholic possession, haunting and the traumatic acting out of the past. Drawing on the recent work of Judith Butler, this article demonstrates how Djebar's narrative seeks an ethical mode of remembrance that refuses to fetishize the traumatic condition.

The quality of the friction stir processed (FSPed) depends on the proper combination of processing parameters. The proper combination can only be found when a series of experiments have been conducted. However, the Taguchi technique was developed as a way of reducing numerous experiments that are time-consuming and costly. This paper reports on the optimization of parameters for the FSP that is conducted underwater (SFSP) and room temperature (NFSP). The Taguchi L18 method was employed in the design of experiments. The four factors used for the analysis had three factors with three-levels and one with two levels. The parameter combinations for SFSP were different from the combination found for NFSP. The level of parameter sensitivity was found to be influenced by the processing condition.
