A first-order perturbation method is adopted to find the dynamic behaviour of an aerostatic circular thrust bearing having a central porous insert as a restrictor. The linearized gas film stiffness and damping are derived and used to study their behaviour with other design variables.

This paper presents an analytical and experimental analysis of the characteristics of a squeeze-type magnetorheological (MR) mount which can be used for various vibration isolation areas. The concept of the squeeze-type mount and details of the design of a squeeze-type MR mount are discussed. These are followed by a detailed description of the test set-up for evaluating the dynamic behaviour of the mount. A series of tests was conducted on the prototype mount built for this study, in order to characterize the changes occurring as a result of changing electrical current to the mount. The results of this study show that increasing electrical current to the mount, which increases the yield stress of the MR fluid, will result in an increase in both stiffness and damping of the mount. The results also show that the mount hysteresis increases with increase in current to the MR fluid, causing changes in stiffness and damping at different input frequencies.

Recently, graphite porous material has been used successfully in an aerostatic bearing. In actual bearing design, it is often necessary to reduce the thickness of porous material to make the bearing smaller. However, a reduction in thickness results in a reduction in the strength of the porous material. In particular, when the diameter of porous material is large, it is difficult to supply the air through the full pad area of porous material because it deforms. Therefore, in this paper, two types of air supply method (the annular groove supply and the hole supply) in a circular aerostatic porous thrust bearing are proposed to avoid the deflection of the bearing surface. The static and dynamic characteristics of aerostatic porous bearing with these air supply methods are investigated theoretically and experimentally. In addition, the effects of a surface restricted layer on the characteristics are clarified.

Purpose Compliant foil thrust bearings are promising bearings for high-speed oil-free turbomachinery. However, most previous experimental and numerical approaches to investigate the performance of these bearings have ignored the effect of bearing runner misalignment. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the effects of static and dynamic angular misalignments of the bearing runner on the performance of a gas-lubricated foil thrust bearing. Design/methodology/approach The bearing runner is allowed a maximum angular misalignment that produces a minimum gas film thickness as low as 20 per cent of the nominal clearance. Then, the variations of bearing load carrying capacity, viscous power loss and stiffness and damping coefficients of the gas film with runner misalignment are thoroughly analyzed. The flow in the gas film is modeled with compressible Reynolds equation along with the Couette approximation technique, and the deformation of the compliant bearing is calculated with a robust analytical model. Small perturbations method is used to calculate the force and moment dynamic coefficients of the gas film. Findings The results show that misaligned foil thrust bearings are capable of developing a restoring moment sufficient enough to withstand the imposed misalignments. Furthermore, the enhanced hydrodynamic effect ensures a stable operation of the misaligned bearing, and the results highlighted the role of the compliant bearing structure to maintain foil bearing prominent features even at misaligned conditions. Originality/value The value of this study is the evaluation of the effects of runner angular misalignments on the static and dynamic characteristics of Generation II bump-type foil thrust bearing.

For an efficient design of hydraulic mounts, it is most important to have a good mathematical model available, which must be simple yet capable of representing dynamic characteristics of the hydraulic mounts accurately. Under high amplitude excitations in the low-frequency range, the hydraulic mounts show strongly frequency-dependent stiffness and damping characteristics, which are related with so-called inertia track dynamics. Since nonlinear damping models based on fluid mechanics are typically used to predict the dynamic characteristics of the hydraulic mounts, relations between various design variables, such as geometry of the inertia track, and resultant stiffness and damping characteristics are understood only by tedious numerical computations. In this paper, the use of an equivalent viscous damping model—derived from a nonlinear model and represented in terms of design variables in an explicit manner—is proposed and, based on the equivalent linear model, are presented simple as well as very useful formulas for an efficient design of the hydraulic mounts.

In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of high-speed hybrid thrust bearing with four-recesses are optimized for different orifice diameter and supply pressure at a given speed condition, the dynamic moment coefficients of hybrid thrust bearing are analyzed, considering the thrust collar angular misalignment case to determine the optimization of orifice diameter and supply pressure under a given speed. The results provide certain reference to the hybrid thrust bearings used in high speed precision spindle.

As a followup to an earlier paper in which a new type of design chart for full journal bearings was given a complete set of design charts for pivoted-pad thrust bearings (Michell bearings) shall now be presented. The dimensionless groups of parameters representing minimum film thickness and bearing traction for one single pad, respectively, have been plotted in a new design chart. Some illustrative examples demonstrating how to use the chart for optimization of pivoted-pad thrust bearings have been included. Some attention has also been paid to the stiffness of the film of lubricant. A design chart for film stiffness has been added to this purpose.

An analysis is conducted and solutions are provided for the dynamic performance of high speed hybrid thrust bearing. By adopting bulk flow theory, the turbulent Reynolds equation is solved numerically with the different orifice diameter and supply pressure. The results show that increasing supply pressure can significantly improve the bearing stiffness and damping, while the orifice diameters make a different effect on the bearing stiffness and damping.

In this study, the effects of groove texture on the dynamic characteristics of water-lubricated thrust bearing are theoretically investigated. The turbulent Reynolds equation and its perturbation equations for water-film lubrication are derived and solved by using finite difference method. Dynamic characteristics including the stiffness and damping coefficients of the bearing are calculated. The effects of rotary speed, film clearance and geometrical parameters including groove texture depth and circumferential angle on the dynamic characteristics of the bearing have been investigated.

Abstract Both flat and island type membranes are used in single-action membrane restrictors. But the difference between the single-action flat membrane restrictor (SFMR) and the single-action island type membrane restrictor (SITMR) has rarely been reported in the literature. In this study, we first compared the static and dynamic characteristics of SFMR and SITMR, and found that there is a little difference between them when the difference between supply pressure ps and outlet pressure pr is not large. Then, we investigated the dynamic characteristics of hydrostatic thrust bearings using both SFMR and SITMR compensation, and found SITMR having a better dynamic bearing performance. The reason for this phenomenon is that the mass of the membrane in SITMR is smaller than that of the membrane in SFMR. When the difference between supply pressure ps and outlet pressure pr becomes large, SFMR reduces the static flow rate of the lubricant of bearing systems more significantly than SITMR.

Journal misalignment usually exists in journal bearings that affect nearly all the bearings static and dynamic characteristics including minimum oil film thickness, maximum oil film pressure, maximum oil film temperature, oil film stiffness, and damping. The main point in this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis on the oil film pressure, oil film temperature, oil film thickness, load-carrying capacity, oil film stiffness, and damping of journal bearing with different misalignment ratios and appropriately considering the turbulent and thermo effects based on solving the generalized Reynolds equation and energy equation. The results indicate that the oil thermo effects have a significant effect on the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings under large eccentricity ratio. The turbulent will obviously affect the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings when the eccentricity or misalignment ratio is large. In the present design of the journal bearing, the load and speed become higher and higher, and the eccentricity and misalignment ratio are usually large in the operating conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to take the effects of journal misalignment, turbulent, and thermal effect into account in the design and analysis of journal bearings.
