obtained his PhD degree in 2008 with the late Professor Keith Fagnou at the University of Ottawa in Canada as an NSERC Doctoral Fellow. He then joined Merck Research Laboratories at Merck-Frosst in Montreal in 2007, making key contributions to the discovery of Doravirine (MK-1439) for which he received a Merck Special Achievement Award. In 2010, he moved from Quebec to New Jersey, where he has served in roles of increasing responsibility with Merck ever since. L.-C. is currently Executive Director and the Head of Process Chemistry and Discovery Process Chemistry organizations, leading a team of smart creative scientists developing innovative chemistry solutions in support of all discovery, pre-clinical and clinical active pharmaceutical ingredient deliveries for the entire Merck portfolio for small-molecule therapeutics. Over his tenure at Merck, L.-C. and his team have made important contributions to >40 clinical candidates and 4 commercial products to date. Tom Rovis was born in Zagreb in former Yugoslavia but was largely raised in southern Ontario, Canada. He earned his PhD degree at the University of Toronto (Canada) in 1998 under the direction of Professor Mark Lautens. From 1998–2000, he was an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University (USA) with Professor David A. Evans. In 2000, he began his independent career at Colorado State University and was promoted in 2005 to Associate Professor and in 2008 to Professor. His group’s accomplishments have been recognized by a number of awards including an Arthur C. Cope Scholar, an NSF CAREER Award, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a ­Katritzky Young Investigator in Heterocyclic Chemistry. In 2016, he moved to Columbia University where he is currently the Samuel Latham Mitchill Professor of Chemistry.

The paper is dedicated to the centenary of the birth of a well-known researcher of Siberian lit-erature, doctor of philological sciences, Professor Vasily Trushkin. The main milestones of the scientist’s creative path, his methodological principles as the “great worker of science” and the most significant systematist and bibliographer of literary Siberia are considered. The paper includes diary materials and the memoirs about V. Trushkin written by Valentin Raspu-tin and Anatoly Prelovsky, colleagues of the scientist at Irkutsk State University. A special place is given to the role of V. Trushkin in the discovery of the talent of Alexander Vampilov, a member of the university literary association, guided by the scientist.

Khabibulla Nurmukhametovich Amirov was born on May 18, 1901 in the village of Tat. Tashaevo of the Nurlatsky district of Tatarstan in a working peasant family. His early desire for knowledge prompted him to move to his brother in Chita as a child, where he graduated from the parish school of the 1st stage in 1916, and in 1923 from the parish school of the 2nd stage. Having shown outstanding performance, curiosity and a great thirst for knowledge over the years of study, after graduating from college, he was sent to continue his studies at the Medical Faculty of Kazan State University. From the very first days of his stay at the university, he takes up his studies with great zeal, paying great attention to a new and unfamiliar subject normal human anatomy. However, experiencing great financial difficulties, he was forced to interrupt his studies at the university. From 1924 to 1927, the young man worked as a nurse in the Zabulachno-Pletenevsky skin and venereological dispensary of the Tatnarkomzdrav, and only after the appointment of a special family scholarship, he was able to continue his studies.

The relevance of the problems of cooperative construction in the formation of Belarusian scientific schools is determined. The role of the Belarusian State University in the development of problems of cooperation in the 1920s is characterised. The activity of S. L. Pevsner as a representative of the economic thought of the 1920s is studied. In the perspective of «history through personality», the problems of the formation of the personnel potential of Belarusian State University are revealed. The relations between the management and the teaching staff of the university, the status and issues of material well-being of teachers invited to Belarusian State University are characterised. The conclusion is made about a significant personnel shortage and the presence of serious competition in the personnel sphere of university science in the 1920s with the development of higher education in the USSR.

Soc. 2010, 132, 11414) the enantioselective Ru-mediated hydrogenation of bicyclic imides such as 18. This transformation worked equally well for three-, four-, five-, six-, and seven-membered rings. Stefan France of the Georgia Institute of Technology developed (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 5684) a catalytic protocol for the homo-Nazarov rearrangement of the doubly activated cyclopropane 20 to the cyclohexanone 21. Richard P. Several overviews of flow chemistry appeared recently. Katherine S. Elvira and Andrew J. deMello of ETH Zürich wrote (Nature Chem. 2013, 5, 905) on micro­fluidic reactor technology. D. Tyler McQuade of Florida State University and the Max Planck Institute Mühlenberg reviewed (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 6384) applications and equipment. Jun-ichi Yoshida of Kyoto University focused (Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 9896) on transformations that cannot be effected under batch condi­tions. Detlev Belder of the Universität Leipzig reported (Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 11644) flow reactions coupled to subsequent micropreparative separations. Leroy Cronin of the University of Glasgow described (Chem. Sci. 2013, 4, 3099) combin­ing 3D printing of an apparatus and liquid handling for convenient chemical synthe­sis and purification. Many of the reactions of organic synthesis have now been adapted to flow con­ditions. We will highlight those transformations that incorporate particularly useful features. One of those is convenient handling of gaseous reagents. C. Oliver Kappe of the Karl-Franzens-University Graz generated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 10241) diimide in situ to reduce 1 to 2. David J. Cole-Hamilton immobilized (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 9805) Ru DuPHOS on a heteropoly acid support, allowing the flow hydrogenation of neat 3 to 4 in high ee. Steven V. Ley of the University of Cambridge added (Org. Process Res. Dev. 2013, 17, 1183) ammonia to 5 to give the thiourea 6. Alain Favre-Réguillon of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers used (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 5978) oxygen to directly oxidize the aldehyde 7 to the car­boxylic acid 8. Professor Kappe showed (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 10567) that supercritical ace­tonitrile directly converted an acid 9 to the nitrile 10. Hisao Yoshida of Nagoya University added (Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 3793) acetonitrile to nitrobenzene 11 to give the para isomer 12 with high regioselectively. Kristin E. Price of Pfizer Groton coupled (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 4342) 13 to 14 to give 15 with very low loading of the Pd catalyst. Andrew Livingston of Imperial College demonstrated (Org. Process Res. Dev. 2013, 17, 967) the utility of nanofiltration under flow conditions to minimize Pd levels in a Heck product.
