In recent years the most salient change in the global food sector has been witnessed in the range of fisheries. Due to the gravity of fishery, particularly in meeting the needs of an adequate and balanced diet, its total share in production, consumption and trading has been on the rise on a global scale. The aim of this study is to detect the factors impinging upon growth trend and foreign trade of global fishery sector. To that end, data from 1990-2017 period of 10 countries meeting 72% of global fisheries and data from Turkey have been employed. In this study panel data analysis method has been applied by using 11 cross-section data and 28-time series. Importation and exportation models have thus been set. An increase by 100% in production of fisheries climbs exportation share by 15% and degrades importation share by 1%. 1-unit increase in income heightens importation by 8 units. Slowness in the growth rate of production of fisheries can be associated with supplying the vast majority of total production by only a few select countries thus threatening global exportation of fisheries. Turkey and relevant countries could gain exportation advantage by conducting a better analysis of their existing potential.

The economic growth of nations continue to be one of the main issues that economists have been interested in analyzing. In effect, several theories have emerged to explain the growth of nations including the Okun’s law which tests the relationship between economic growth and unemployment. Using the World Bank Dataset, the study tested the validity of Okun's Law in West Africa by employing fixed effect regressions to control for inconsistencies of the OLS estimates due to omitted variable bias. The random and time-fixed effect regressions confirm the validity of the Okun's Law in West Africa. The time-fixed effect regression shows that, economic growth will decline by 0.311 annually for every unit increase in the rate of unemployment. Time variant effects such as changes in policy provides a stronger case for the effect of unemployment rate volatility on the growth of these economies. It is therefore recommended that, various stakeholders adopt efficient fiscal and monetary policies aimed at lowering the rate of unemployment thereby expanding economic growth. One of such policies could be the reduction of the high corporate tax rates in the region that is bedeviling African countries by preventing industries and businesses from being built.

Aim: The present study intends to analyse the influence of weather parameters on the production of black pepper in six major pepper producing districts of Kerala, the Indian state which contributes a considerable share to national spice exports. Methodology: This research is based on secondary data which is limited to six major black pepper producing districts of Kerala which were chosen based on their contribution to total production of the state 2020. More than 50% of the production was from Idukki district followed by Wayanad (8%), and around 3 to 3.5% from Kannur, Kasargod, Kottayam and Kollam districts respectively. Annual precipitation, Relative humidity, Maximum and Minimum temperatures were the parameters taken into consideration along with production data of over 15 years (2005-2019) which was then subjected to regression analysis using panel data. Results: According to the results, significant reduction in production by 2.52% and 1.88% was recorded for unit increase maximum (P= 0.047) and minimum temperature (P=0.03) respectively. Likewise, unit rise in relative humidity and rainfall was responsible for decrease In production by 1.1%, and 0.07% respectively though they were reported to be insignificant. Conclusion: From the present study, it could be concluded that maximum and minimum temperatures were found to be significant in affecting the production of black pepper. However the negative regression coefficients obtained for other factors like rainfall and relative humidity implied its negative effect on production. In order to combat these variations, there is therefore, the need to create awareness to farmers in India on the need to adopt best farming practices in order to improve yield of this important crop.

Abstract. Compared to 2019, the global growth rate of atmospheric methane rose by about 50 % in 2020, reaching 15 ppb/yr. Models of global atmospheric chemistry show that reductions in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduce levels of the hydroxyl radical, and lengthen the methane lifetime. Using estimates of NOx emission reductions associated with COVID-19 lockdowns around the world in 2020, together with model-derived regional and sectoral sensitivities of methane to NOx emissions, we find that NOx emissions reductions can fully explain the observed surge in the global methane growth rate. Whilst changes in NOx emissions are probably not the only important factor that has influenced methane since the beginning of 2020, it is clear that they are a key factor that will need to be included within any attribution study, and that they may well be the dominant driver of these recent methane changes. The major global scale changes in composition of the Earth’s atmosphere measured during lockdown provide unprecedented constraints on the sensitivity of the atmospheric chemical system to changes in emissions, and are of great utility for evaluating policy-relevant models.

Abstract Cryptocurrencies have experienced an exponential growth trend in the past 24 months, followed by a big crash. In the early years of the Internet, inspired entrepreneurs such as Jeffrey Bezos realized that, when something grows exponentially, it becomes ubiquitous within a short time span. Similarly to the Internet in 1994, cryptocurrencies have recently been growing at a dazzling rate, thus one can expect them to be used on a global scale very soon, in spite of the last bubble which has already burst. Alternative currencies are greeted with great enthusiasm, due to their potential to return financial power back to the people, especially in the context of general dissatisfaction and disappointment with the banking sector. They bring about several advantages, such as financial innovations, lower fees as well as increased availability to developing populations. At the same time, their high volatility and lack of supervision might imply that they only serve as complementary financing and not as a substitute of traditional banking. This article discusses the development of cryptocurrencies, including aspects related to Bitcoin, financial technology and the blockchain. Using historical data from Coinmarketcap.com between April 2013 and February 2018, I run a quantitative analysis of the distributions and evolution over time for all listed cryptocurrencies with known market capitalization. I look at the interplay between number of cryptocurrencies and market value, at growth rates, cumulative shares and volatility. I find a phenomenon of exponential growth and violent volatility, which I explain in light of cryptocurrencies’ strengths and weaknesses, as identified in the literature. I emphasize the importance of cryptocurrencies in the context of the global digital economy and I discuss future implications.

AbstractThe paper presents and discusses the findings of a field research study undertaken in a rural area in the province of Reggio Calabria, in Southern Italy, focused on firms belonging to the agri-food sector, in particular, on the excellent firms. Its objective is to point out how, even in rural and extremely marginal areas, and in unfavourable socio-economic and institutional contexts, it is possible that excellent firms were born and grew, and that they became competitive at the national and global scale. The paper therefore analyses these entrepreneurial case studies in-depth, using a methodologically mixed approach: on the one hand, focusing on their economic performance (quantitative analysis), and, on the other hand, investigating their strategy by means of direct open interviews. The paper concludes by providing “lessons” useful to understand how firms can not only survive, but also can be competitive and expand their business, even if they are located in extremely unfavourable peripheral contexts. This can be achieved by exploiting the strengths of these territories, which, even if few, they do not lack.

International trade is one of the major aspects that grow tremendously in Southeast Asia and export is regarded as main accelerators of growth in either developed or developing countries. The objective of this study is to determine the determinants of export performance for ASEAN countries. In this study, panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method is adopted for time period between 2000 to 2015. Empirical findings indicate that there is a long-run relationship between determinants of export such as interest rate, economic growth and foreign direct investment with export performance of ASEAN countries. Therefore, policy makers need to strategize their policies to move towards closer cooperation among the ASEAN countries, especially promoting sustainable exportation in the region.

Rainfall has enormous impact on weather and climate. An investigation on impact of rainfall on coconut productivity was taken place in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts of Kerala, to identify the variation in coconut production on an account of secondary data based on rainfall collected for a time period from 1991 to 2015 (25 years). Panel data analysis revealed that rainfall during 3rd (July-September) and 4th (October-December) quarters was found to have significant negative impact on coconut production. Amount of rainfall observed during 1st (Januvary-March) and 2nd(April-June) quarters has positive non-significant impact on coconut production. The growth trend of rainfall showed an increasing trend in Kozhikode district whereas Malappuram district had a decreasing trend over the years.
